EN→DE Archive.org versionTCL is ramping up its 2021 smartphone range with the TCL 20 range. This review covers the TCL 20 L+ 4G (Lite+) and the 5G that, apart from the processor, camera set-up, and battery size, share the same parentage. First, let me assure you that the TCL 20 L+ 4G and the 5G are high-quality phones. Neither is class-leading, but you can’t make a mistake with either. There is a little too much marketing hype on the website (but that is a universal problem), and in both cases, they are not exploiting the full capabilities of the excellent Qualcomm System-on-Chip (SoC) under the bonnet. We are reviewing both models together and will show the different results from over 70 tests. Their ratings and explanation in detail are at the end of the review, or just click here to skip all the technical stuff. Hint: 5G for $100 more – it wins hands down but not without caveats.

EN→DE Archive.org versionIn honesty, I wasn’t hugely excited by the prospect of this review unit, mainly because it doesn’t have a huge sell. No magical camera, no super high res screen and the battery sit in the middle of the road. I wasn’t wowed by it initially, but in realising that I wasn’t really missing anything having moved from a significantly more expensive phone I started really looking for issues. Adding to the fact that you’ve got a 5G capable device in your pocket for sub $500 it’s an impressive and pretty cheap cost of entry that I would be happy to spend my money on. The physical size of the phone is spot on for my preference, easily (keep in mind I have big hands) operating the device with a single hand. The fingerprint sensor is very quick which offsets the hit and miss nature of the face unlock.

EN→DE Archive.org versionIf you’re looking for a great balance of value and features then take a look at the new TCL 20 5G smartphone which has a design, camera, display and innovation that rivals flagships phones that are more than twice the price. Priced at less than $500, the TCL 20 5G is a compelling mid-tier offering for those customers who want a slick looking device, an excellent triple camera system, an impressive display and 5G connectivity. In this increasingly competitive market more customers than ever are looking for value.
