Fazit: As one of the pioneers of the gaming notebook, it comes as no surprise to see Alienware coming to the table with yet another innovation. In 2002, the original Area-51m represented the world's first gaming-specific notebook. In typical Alienware fashion, the notebook carried a pricetag that was equally as breathtaking as its performance. With the arrival of the Area-51 m5500, Alienware has given a consumers a much more cost-conscious notebook that still provides the same level of performance enthusiasts have come to expect from this manufacturer.

Fazit: The Alienware Area-51 m5550 is one of the few notebooks I have tested that I feel delivers an outstanding ownership experience. Granted, it does have its flaws -- poor battery life, a warm operating temperature, and average viewing angles, but no product is going to be perfect, and this one is no exception. The m5550 is the overall most powerful 15.4" notebook that has been evaluated here at NotebookReview. Equipped with a top-of-the-line Core 2 Duo CPU, performance is unstoppable, and it will give most desktops a run for the finish line. Coupled with Nvidia's Go7600 graphics card, handling the latest games is a breeze. The external appearance is one-of-a-kind, and it will be a stand-out wherever it goes. In a few words, the Alienware Area-51 m5550 is like the high-end sports car of the notebook world: sleek, sculpted, and fast. Game over.

Fazit: Until now, that is. Having been bought by Dell has its privileges, and the Area-51 m5550, one of the first notebooks to receive the latest Intel Core 2 Duo mobile CPU (code-named "Merom"), perfectly illustrates these benefits. The laptop's 2.33-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7600 processor is the fastest one available so far, but this performance-driven media laptop is hot in more ways than one. The notebook's black protruding edges resemble the upper part of a rib cage, giving it the profile of an extraterrestrial being. Of course, the m5550 wouldn't be a true Alienware notebook without a muscle-car paint job, and the glossy silver coating is another shining point for this laptop. You'll find another glossy coating literally on top of the 15.4-inch widescreen. I noticed the detail and excellent color saturation when watching movies, editing digital photos, and playing games, though I would have liked to see a higher resolution than 1,280-by-800.

Fazit: Unlike its higher-end sibling, the Aurora mALX, the silver-and-black Alienware Area-51 m5550 has a subdued look that might blend in to the corporate landscape, were it not for the familiar glowing alien head on the lid. At 7 pounds, the Area-51 m5550 is also designed to be slightly more mobile than the mALX--though its disappointingly brief battery life is likely to keep users tethered to the wall socket. The laptop did post some of the best test scores we've seen on our application benchmarks, so if you're looking for raw power (and you can afford to pay more than two grand to get it), you won't go wrong with the Alienware Area-51 m5550. If you need a laptop you will run on its battery for extended periods, though, we recommend a similar and less expensive system, such as the HP Pavilion dv6000 or the PC Club Enpower ENP680.

Fazit: The pricey Alienware Area-51 m5550 delivers plenty of performance, but not enough battery life or multimedia extras for the average mainstream user. If you’re looking for top-notch performance, higher-end A/V connections, and futuristic design, the Alienware Area-51 m5550 delivers. However, if its terrible battery life, incomplete set of multimedia features, and high price sour the deal for you, keep on looking. With its silver coloring, black accents, and glowing alien-head ornament, the m5550 looks way cooler than your typical mainstream notebook.

Alienware Laptop Review: Area 51

Fazit: Unless you're a computer buff, you might not be familiar with Alienware. But if you like a laptop to be prettier than a supermodel and loaded with features, you should get yourself acquainted with their Area 51 model. This is one killer system. Alienware is a company that's synonymous with quality systems aimed at the gamer who wants the best system money can buy. While they produce stellar desktops, their high performance laptop models are drool-worthy, and come equipped with components such as a Pentium 4 processor up to 3.2 GHz, DDR3200 RAM, and ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 pro graphics. The system allows users to have the same gaming experience previously only found on powerful desktop systems, and the laptop's graphics card can also be upgraded, if it strikes your fancy.

Fazit: I would say that the Alienware Area-51 m5550i is a great buy, but if I were to do it again, I would change to a higher processor speed because it would help increase system speed at this point more than a memory upgrade. The biggest downside is a dead Pixel in the lower left of the screen that Alienware will not replace. The dead Pixel according to an email I received from them is not in the center of the screen and therefore not repairable. Other than that, this is the best performance/dollar buy I could find anywhere and I am not sorry I went with Alienware. I like the fact that most of the components can be upgraded. I can switch to an 802.11/n standard when that becomes available on a miniPci card for notebooks.
