Der Bolide Alienware M18x steht eigentlich nur sich selber im Weg. Das immense Gewicht von 5,6 kg verwässert den mobilen Anspruch. Doch die umschaltbare Grafiklösung steht dem wiederrum entgegen. Akkulaufzeiten von 4,5 Stunden sind mit dem Alienware M18x ohne Weiteres möglich - neue Bestwerte in der Gaming-Kategorie über 17-Zoll.

Zu Beginn waren wir ehrlich gesagt etwas skeptisch, was das Alienware M18x betrifft. 18-zöllige „Monster“ liegen bei Notebookkäufern nicht sonderlich im Trend, die meisten Nutzer greifen maximal zu einem 17-Zöller. Nach unserer ausführlichen Begutachtung würden wir dem M18x jedoch einen gewissen Erfolg zutrauen.

As the saying goes, two is always better than one, but which dual video card setup should you get on the Alienware M18x: AMD's or Nvidia's? While the AMD-powered M18x scored a little higher on the synthetic 3DMark06 test, the Nvidia-powered configuration had slightly higher frame rates in actual game play. At present, Alienware also charges $150 more for the Nvidia cards, making the AMD seem like a better value on this rig, though Nvidia has a minor edge in real-world performance. With either video card option, the Alienware M18x remains the gaming notebook to beat, if money is no object. If you don't have $4,500 laying around, the next best option is the $2,076 ASUS G73SW-A2 with its 2-GHz Intel Core i7-2630QM CPU, 16GB of RAM, Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M, and 750GB, 7,200-rpm hard drive and 160GB SSD. But if you're looking for the most powerful gaming rig in the land, stick with the Alienware M18x.

We had a hunch that NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 580M would continue to be the fastest single GPU available in notebooks, and that turned out to be accurate...mostly. In a couple of games the 580M is a slam dunk, while in others it trades blows with AMD's Radeon HD 6990M.

The M18x lives up to expectations. It feels lovingly crafted around gamers' needs, combining superlative design, build quality, aesthetics and scalable power. But it comes at a cost. The review model's price compares reasonably well to other gaming laptops, but component upgrades incur a luxury brand tax, with the top spec costing close to £5k. The real issue, however, is one of positioning. The extra size, weight and power consumption required by the dual graphics cards pushes it into competition with much cheaper desktops. For all it's gaming power, that's one contest the M18x can't win.

Where to start with the M18x? Well it probably has to be the size... this system is a desktop replacement without doubt and has a significant weight to it thanks to the tough, metal outer shell and large display with high end components/cooling inside. These factors do count towards build quality in a positive way though because the M18x feels well build, looks great and has an epic feel to the screen.

AMD Radeon HD 6970M Crossfire: Zwei HD 6970M Grafikkarten im Crossfire Betrieb. Aufgrund der etwas schlechteren Treiberunterstützung bei Spielen meist etwas langsamer als vergleichbare Nvidia SLI Kombinationen.

High-End Grafikkarten welche auch neueste und anspruchsvolle 3D Spiele in hohen Auflösungen und Detailstufen flüssig wiedergeben können. Durch den hohen Stromverbrauch, werden diese GPUs nur in großen und schweren Notebooks mit geringen Akkulaufzeiten angeboten.

18.4": 18 Zoll Displaygrösse gibt es erst seit 2008 für Desktop-Replacements. Es gibt nur wenige Notebooks, die einen größeren Display haben als 17 Zoll. Allerdings gibt es auch ein paar Laptop-Displays, die noch größer sind. Die DTR-Laptops sind schwerer zu tragen, brauchen mehr Strom, dafür sind Texte leicht lesbar und hohe Auflösungen kein Problem. DTR sind hauptsächlich für stationären Schreibtischeinsatz vorgesehen, wo Gewicht und Energiehunger egal sind.

5.64 kg: Dieser Laptop ist sehr schwer. Deshalb wird diese Gewichtsklasse vor allem von Desktop Replacements mit 19 Zoll Display bevölkert, denn selbst für 17 Zoll DTR ist das bereits zu gewichtig.

83.25%: Diese Bewertung muss man eigentlich als durchschnittlich ansehen, denn es gibt etwa ebenso viele Notebooks mit besseren Beurteilungen wie Schlechteren. Die Verbalbeurteilungen klingen aber oft besser als sie wirklich sind, denn richtig gelästert wird über Notebooks eher selten. Obwohl dieser Bereich offiziell meist einem "Befriedigend" entspricht, passt oft eher "mäßiger Durchschnitt".
