HP ProBook 4520s Review: Good Business Class Notebook for Daily Use

After using the HP 4520s for a few weeks, I would wholeheartedly recommend this notebook to someone who wanted a computer for basic business tasks and some watching video and even light gaming, video and photo editing. It is powerful enough for all of the things I normally do with a notebook, including document creation/editing, presentations, web surfing, and watching movies.  I also do some basic video and photo editing and it worked well for that too. It is not as portable as smaller notebooks, so you will want to remember that this is not a tool for a real road warrior who needs something lighter with longer battery life. If you put your notebook on a desk and occasionally take it with you, then you will be happy with the 4520s. If you are constantly working on the go, then look for something smaller with a longer battery life.

The HP ProBook 4520s offers many improvements from the previous Core 2 Duo-based 4510s. The metal exterior cladding improves looks over the older plastic finish and gives the body a stronger feel. Inside, the brushed metal surface is used above and below the keyboard. Another change is the Synaptics ClickPad which offers a spacious flush-mount touch surface at the expense of integrating the left and right mouse buttons. Looks are improved but in use we found the all-in-one Touchpad surface to cause problems with resting fingers on the Touchpad surface over the buttons. Overall the 4520s brings huge improvements in the looks department from the older model with equally big performance increases with the new 2010 Intel Core processors. The Intel Core i5 processor in the 4520s performed very well in our tests, offering improvements of more than 30% over the previous model. If you are in the market for a small-business rig the ProBook 4520s is worth checking out, but spring for the larger battery if you plan on traveling.

For mobile professionals who subject their notebooks to more wear and tear than the average user, the metal-clad HP ProBook 4520s is ready to take some licks. This durable notebook offers Core i5 computing power and a striking 15.6-inch display, as well as a comprehensive set of tools for business users on the go. This $799 ProBook is loaded with handy tools for mobile pros and is more durable than the average notebook. (Just be mindful of its finicky touch pad and short battery life.)

HP: 1939 gegründet, ist das Unternehmen ein wichtiger Server und Druckerhersteller. Mit etwa 309.000 Mitarbeitern in 170 Ländern und einem Umsatz von 118 Mrd. US-Dollar (2008) gehört HP zu einem der führenden IT-Unternehmen weltweit. HP ist nach Angaben des Marktforschers IDC (Q2 2008) mit 18,9 % Marktanteil der weltweit größte Hersteller von Personal Computern (Dell 16,4 %, Acer 9,9 %, Lenovo 7,5 %).

Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Intel HD Graphics oder GMA HD genannte onboard Grafikkarte welche im Package der Core i3/i5/i7 Arrandale Dual-Core Prozessoren untergebracht wird. Je nach Prozessormodell maximal mit 500 bis 766 MHz getaktet (Turbo Boost). Von Lenovo anscheinend auch GMA5700MHD genannt. Die gleichgenannte Intel HD Graphics Prozessorgrafik in den Sandy Bridge Prozessoren basiert auf einer neueren Architektur.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 530v: Umbenannte HD 4350 Grafikkarte und dadurch noch in 55nm gefertigt und mit DirectX 10.1 Support.

Intel Core i5:

430M: Der Core i5-430M besitzt im Vergleich zum i7-640 nur 3MB L3 Cache und taktet zwischen 2.26-2.53 GHz (je nach Auslastung dank Turbo Mode). VT-d, Trusted Execution und AES Funktionen fehlen dem 430M jedoch. Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-766 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). Dadurch ist der gesamte TDP von 35 Watt nicht sehr hoch.

Intel Core i3:

370M: Der Core i3-370M taktet etwas höher als der Core i5-430M, jedoch ohne Turbo Boost und geringer getaktete GPU. Dadurch läuft die CPU mit maximal 2.4 GHz. Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-667 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). 

15.6: 15 Zoll Display-Varianten sind der Standard und werden für fast die Hälfte aller Notebooks verwendet. Notebook-Displays im 15 Zoll-Format sind der Standard schlechthin. 15.4 Zoll ist meist die genaue Größeneinheit für 16:10 Notebooks, während 15.6 Zoll ein Indiz für das Format 16:9 sind. Der Grund der Beliebtheit mittelgrosser Displays ist, dass diese Größe einigermaßen augenschonend ist und dennoch nicht allzu viel Strom verbraucht und die Geräte noch halbwegs kompakt sein können.

Dieses Notebook ist etwas leichter als der Durchschnitt aller Notebooks. Für Subnotebooks ist das bereits zu schwer. 14 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.

76.8%: Weltbewegend ist diese Bewertung nicht. Obwohl es bei den meisten Websites einem "Befriedigend" entspricht, muss man bedenken, dass es kaum Notebooks gibt, die unter 60% erhalten. Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich klingen oft nicht schlecht, sind aber oft verklausulierte Euphemismen. Dieses Notebook wird von den Testern eigentlich als unterdurchschnittlich angesehen, eine Kaufempfehlung kann man nur mit viel Wohlwollen darin sehen.
