The Asus ROG Strix G17 is an attractive but unbalanced gaming laptop. Its potent AMD Ryzen 9 processor excels in 1080p gaming, but playing at 1440p leaves the middling GeForce RTX 4060 GPU shouldering most of the burden. The display is exceptionally colorful, which is handy for content creators, but since this is a gaming laptop it would be better served with improved HDR capabilities. Even so, big-screen bargain hunters may consider a trip to Walmart to check it out. If battery life isn't a priority, the Strix G17 could serve as a designer by day and a gamer by night.

At $1,800 (or more), it’s hard to recommend the ROG Strix G17. It’s not a bad laptop, but if you’re shopping online, machines like the Lenovo Legion Pro 5 offer a similar punch in performance for a lower price, along with slightly more robust build quality. The Walmart-exclusive G713PV-WS94 is a different beast. With its bargain bin pricing, the G713PV-WS94 undercuts the competition while offering similar or better performance, despite what the spec sheet says. What’s even more impressive is that it can best laptops that would cost $3,000 or more in the previous generation, such as the Alienware x17 R2, while offering additional features like DLSS 3. This is a configuration worth seeking out, offering one of the best values I’ve seen out of a gaming laptop this generation.

Asus delivers an inexpensive yet massive 17.3-inch gaming laptop with solid performance through the Strix G17, perfect for those who can’t afford to spend the big bucks on the most powerful gaming hardware out there. Featuring excellent productivity metrics, high frame rates while gaming, a decent enough display for its price, and solid speakers, I came away happy with what the Strix G17 could do. But its abysmal battery life is hard to grapple with, alongside a cheap feeling hinge and deck. But if you don’t expect to be detached from an outlet for more than a couple of hours, you’ll get by fine. If you want superior battery life and can deal with a slightly smaller 16-inch display, we highly recommend the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro. Otherwise, the Strix G17 is a powerful machine.

Well, we can consider the experiment to be successful. And a major failure, at the same time. Why failure, though? How can something have both a positive, and a negative outcome at the same time? Firstly, the performance of this beast was fantastic. The new chips do a fine job in sustaining high clock speeds, while at the same time, they are not too difficult to cool down. We have to mention the fact that the ROG Strix G17 G713P (2023) features a liquid metal thermal compound on the CPU, which is definitely helping. However, it is time to say why the experiment was not successful – because of the horrific battery life. This machine has brought us straight back to pre-2015 years when gaming laptops had about 4 milliseconds of battery life. Well, in the case of this device, it is up to 4 hours and a half of very light Web browsing.
