80% HP EliteBook 8 G1a review: AMD’s hardware shines

The HP EliteBook 8 G1a combines a premium metal build quality with AMD Ryzen AI 7 PRO 350 hardware. In many ways, the result is an excellent, well-balanced machine. AMD’s chips are highly underrated right now. They don’t match the CPU performance you’ll find in a high-end workstation or the battery life you’ll find in a thin-and-light laptop, but they offer an excellent mix of both. Plus, this delivers an NPU fast enough for Copilot+ PC features, so the AI features here aren’t just marketing. If apps ever start taking more advantage of NPUs, you’ll want a fast one like the 50 TOPS NPU here — not the 12 TOPS NPU Intel is still delivering in most PCs. But this isn’t the be-all, end-all business laptop. The display drags down the overall experience, and the graphics performance just isn’t up there with the CPU and NPU performance.

The HP EliteBook 8 Flip 13 (G1i) is an odd duck, but it's also the right duck for a lot of professionals who need a compact, long-lasting, and versatile laptop for work — with a lot of features and options packed in that you simply can't find elsewhere. Add every option, and you could end up paying over $5,000 for a laptop that's less premium in many respects than more traditional flagships, but those laptops can't do what this one does. Also, it's pretty regularly on sale (while I'm writing this review, it's exactly 50% off on all configurations at HP.com). It's a truly unique laptop, and I can't help but praise it — even if the display and performance aren't anything to write home about. If you have a feeling this is the perfect productivity partner you've been seeking, you can get the HP EliteBook 8 Flip 13 (G1i) from $2,324 at HP.com (but, again, watch out for frequent discounts).

As a machine for businesses, HP has gone out of the way to make this laptop feel premium with a thoughtfully designed metal chassis, a spacious keyboard, and the best pen storage and charging system I’ve ever seen on a laptop. But not all parts of this machine are quite so premium. I was expecting more from the webcam and microphone, and the display is the main part of the machine that doesn’t stand out. As far as performance, the story here is the story of Intel’s CPU troubles. After reviewing Lunar Lake laptops, I wince at seeing $2,000 Intel-powered productivity laptops with significantly lower graphics performance and power efficiency. And the Arrow Lake CPU here doesn’t deliver noticeably faster performance than Lunar Lake CPUs in our benchmarks.

HP: 1939 gegründet, ist das US-Unternehmen ein wichtiger Server und Druckerhersteller und eines der führenden IT-Unternehmen weltweit. Bis 2015 hieß das Unternehmen Hewlett-Packard Company. Nach einer Aufspaltung wurde der Computer-Bereich in HP Inc. umbenannt.

2023 hatte HP einen ungefähren Marktanteil von 22% am weltweiten PC-Absatz und war damit die Nummer 2 nach Lenovo.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.

AMD Radeon 860M: Starke RDNA3+ basierende integrierte Grafikkarte (iGPU) mit 8 der 16 Compute Units (= 512 Unified Shader) und einer Taktung von bis zu 3 GHz (je nach Modell).

Intel Graphics 4-Core iGPU (Arrow Lake): Integrierte Grafikkarte basierend auf die Xe LPG Architektur (ähnlich zu den dedizierten Arc GPUs, jedoch mit Fokus auf Effizienz). Bietet 4 Xe Kerne (64 Xe Vector Engines) und 4 Raytracing Einheiten.

AMD Strix / Gorgon Point:

Ryzen AI 7 PRO 350: Eine relativ leistungsstarke Krackan Point Familie Prozessor, die Anfang 2025 vorgestellt wurde. Die APU integriert 8 CPU-Kernen (4 Zen 5-Kerne mit bis zu 5 GHz und 4 Zen 5c-Kerne mit bis zu 3,5 GHz). Der Ryzen AI 7 PRO 350 ist identisch zum Consumer AI 350 mit Support für zusätzliche Management und Security Features.

Intel Arrow Lake: Available Oct 24, 2024 with hybrid CPU cores and up to 4 graphics cores.

Ultra 7 265U: Auf der Meteor-Lake-Architektur (Arrow Lake-U Serie) basierender High-End Mobilprozessor. Bietet 2 Performance-Kerne mit bis zu 5.3 GHz (inkl SMT) und 8+2 Effizienzkerne mit bis zu 4,2 GHz und kann daher 14 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeiten. Der Compute-Tile wird im modernen Intel 3 Prozess (5nm) hergestellt.

16.00: Dieser Bereich für Displayformate war und ist eine Seltenheit. Es ist größer als der allgemeine Standard von 15 Zoll, aber noch nicht im Bereich der großen Workstations. Man hat üblicherweise höhere Bildschirmauflösungen zur Verfügung, darunter leidet aber auch die Portabilität.
