Store-bought fare doesn't get much better than the Toshiba Satellite U305-S5127. It's a preconfigured retail-only Windows Vista Home Premium laptop that hits all the right notes for good portable computing: light heft, bright screen, nice price, and great battery life. It's all there. Even so-so speed and a slightly imperfect keyboard do little to mar the gotta-have-it vibe. This glossy black, $1350 (as of 10/24/07) all-purpose laptop weighs 4.9 pounds and has a small but very bright 13.3-inch 1280-by-800 screen. The display was so bright that I suspected new LED technology at work in the background, but it is in fact a 250-NIT LCD (an above-average brightness spec) combined with TruBrite technology.

This stylish 13.3-inch notebook boasts extra-long battery life and plenty of features for an affordable price. So what's not to like? From the new Apple MacBook to the Dell XPS M1330, the 13.3-inch notebooks we've seen lately are smaller and thinner than ever but still manage to match the functionality and performance of bigger notebooks. Armed with a Santa Rosa processor and Turbo Memory, Toshiba's 13.3-inch Satellite U305-S5127 has plenty of promise. In addition to mobility, it offers students and road warriors outstanding battery life and strong wireless performance for a fair price. But when it comes to multimedia playback and reliable hardware, the U305 stumbles. The U305's Onyx Blue Metallic lid is sleek, as is its Titanium Silver interior. Above the keyboard are six multimedia buttons, including Stop, Play/Pause, and Forward and Back, as well as launch buttons for Toshiba's DVD Player and Internet Explorer.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100: Integrierte shared Memory Grafikkarte von Intel, die im 965GM und GL960 Chipsatz eingebaut ist. Dank voll programmierbarer Pipeline DX 10 fähig (mit Treibern seit 15.9.0.1472). Gute Performance für eine integrierte Grafikkarte, jedoch trotzdem kaum spielefähig.

3D Spiele sind auf diesen Vertretern nur in Ausnahmen spielbar, grundsätzlich sind die Grafiklösungen hierfür jedoch nicht geeignet. Office Programme und Internet surfen dürfte jedoch ohne Problem möglich sein.
