Die Spiegelungen im Display des Acer Aspire One DF255 stören und auch die Beleuchtung des Bildschirms könnte besser sein. Alle Standardanwendungen laufen flüssig und gut ab. Leider ist die Tastatur teilweise etwas schwammig. Die Tasten verfügen über keinen klaren Druckpunkt. Das Touchpad grenzt sich kaum sichtbar von der Handballenauflage ab, reagiert aber schnell und hat Multitouch-Funktion.

There are always compromises to be made when you build to a budget, and Acer has done well with the Aspire One D255 in order to avoid the netbook feeling unduly cheap or underpowered. With a street price of $329.99 it’s affordable and offers decent longevity away from the mains. Anybody with ambitions beyond basic browsing and media playback should look to something more powerful, but for mainstream use the D255 is perfectly sufficient.

The Acer Aspire D255 is something of a mixed blessing, as many netbooks are. Lightweight and with good battery life, it is annoyingly slow at times and awkward to use. The dual-boot mode is interesting, and no doubt the future for many devices, but there seems no clear use for it at present beyond a way of siloing off different types of data between the two. The price is good but not cheap enough compared to other netbooks to really stand out.

The Acer Aspire One D255 isn’t the best looking netbook out there, but like Acer netbooks we’ve seen in the past, it does incorporate some of the newest hardware at a price that’s hard to beat. The partnering of Android with Windows 7 still doesn’t appeal to us. The Android OS is tempting but ultimately doesn’t really offer enough to get excited about. We’d rather boot straight into Windows 7, which offers much better performance. Fortunately Acer offer simple control over the Android side of things so you can opt to disable it if you like.

Otherwise the build quality and choice of materials isn’t premium, but the performance overall is great for a compact device to take on the road with you.

We like the sentiment and the smartphone-centric OS does transfer nicely on to the netbook – but we can't really see the point and were just as happy using Windows 7 for the above. Fortunately, the Acer Aspire One D255 does the basics very well, making this an incredibly usable and portable option. We're just not convinced about the inclusion of Android, however.

Acer: 1976 gegründet, ist Acer einer der internationalen Hersteller mit den meisten Marktanteilen weltweit und den meisten getesteten Notebook-Modellen im deutsch- und englischsprachigen Raum. Nach eigenen Angaben ist das Unternehmen "drittgrößter Anbieter auf dem PC-Weltmarkt und auf Position zwei im Notebook-Segment mit dem schnellsten Wachstum unter den Top fünf der Weltrangliste". Der Konzern ist zusammengeschlossen mit Gateway Inc. und Packard Bell. Acer beschäftigt weltweit 5.000 Mitarbeiter. Im Jahr 2007 realisierter Umsatz: 14,07 Mrd. US$. Acer ist nach Angaben des Marktforschers IDC (Q2 2008) mit 9,9 % Marktanteil der weltweit drittgrößte Hersteller von Personal Computern (HP 18,9 %, Dell 16,4 %, Lenovo 7,5 %, Apple 5,7%).

Diese Karten können nur sehr alte und sehr anspruchslose 3D Spiele flüssig darstellen.  Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung oder (SD) Videoschnitt sind jedoch ohne große Einschränkungen möglich.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 3150: Integrierte (shared memory) Grafikkarte welche im Prozessor Intel Atom N4xx integriert ist. Basiert laut Intel auf einen "optimierten" X3100 Kern, ist jedoch nur minimal schneller als der alte GMA 950. Daher für HD Videos und 3D Spiele nicht geeignet.

Intel Atom: Die Intel Atom Serie besteht aus 64-Bit Mikroprozessoren für günstige und stromsparende Notebooks, MIDs oder UMPC. Besonderheit der Architektur, ist das die Befehle nicht wie derzeit üblich (z. B. Intel Core Architekture oder AMD Turion) "out of Order"  sondern  "in  Order"  ausgeführt  werden. Dadurch verliert man zwar einiges an Performance, jedoch spart dies Transistoren und daher Kosten und dadurch auch etwas Strom.

N550: Doppelkernprozessor für Netbooks mit lediglich 8.5 Watt TDP. Durch die geringe Taktung von 1.5 GHz in manchen Anwendungen ev. langsamer als N465. Unterstützt bereits DDR3 Hauptspeicher.

N450: Intel Atom CPU für Netbooks mit integriertem DDR2 Speichercontroller und GMA 3150 Grafik. Die Leistung ist nur etwas besser eine Kombination aus N270 / GMA950, jedoch ist der gesamte Stromverbrauch deutlich besser. Die Leistung ist daher immer nur vergleichbar mit einem alten 1.2 GHz Pentium 3M.

10.1: Es handelt sich um ein kleines Displayformat für Subnotebooks bzw. sind 10 Zoll das Standardformat für Netbooks. Der Vorteil der Mini-Notebooks liegt darin, dass das Gerät klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das vergleichsweise kleine Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten relativ anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen sind nur bedingt nutzbar wegen zu kleiner Schrift- und Icongröße.

Dieses Subnotebook/Netbook/UMPC, sofern man es als solches überhaupt bezeichnen kann, gehört zu den leichtesten Notebooks überhaupt und kann klarerweise hervorragend getragen werden. Es gibt kaum Sub-Notebooks, aber ein paar Netbooks in dieser extremen Gewichtsklasse. 7-9 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.

1.3 kg:

Dieses Subnotebook/Netbook gehört zu den leichtesten Notebooks überhaupt und kann hervorragend getragen werden. Es gibt nur wenige Sub-Notebooks/Netbooks, die noch leichter sind. 10 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.

72.95%: Diese Bewertung ist schlecht. Die meisten Notebooks werden besser beurteilt. Als Kaufempfehlung darf man das nicht sehen. Auch wenn Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich gar nicht so schlecht klingen ("genügend" oder "befriedigend"), meist sind es Euphemismen, die eine Klassifikation als unterdurchschnittliches Notebook verschleiern.
