The bad: Some options (including HD DVD drive) not available yet; disappointing battery life. The bottom line: HP's attractive Pavilion dv6500t is a well-designed 15-inch multimedia laptop that stands out from the mainstream crowd with touch-sensitive media controls and an HDMI output, but the standard battery could be better.

Capable of serious work as well, it's a strong performer, yet fairly light (6.2 pounds) and easily totable. This well-designed multimedia notebook performs well, thanks to one of Intel's latest mobile processors.

Fazit: HP has scored big with its piano-lacquer Pavilion design, and the new HP Pavilion dv6500t sticks with it, adding minimal visual upgrades. The subtle wave-pattern pinstriping has been replaced by a more circular imprint, but the glossy black exterior and silver keyboard deck look as sharp and sleek as ever (fingerprint smudges notwithstanding). The biggest draw, however, is its Santa Rosa chipset, which churned out good performance numbers and very good battery life. (View our photo gallery.)

Fazit: The HP Pavilion dv6500t is a “Santa Rosa” equipped update to the very popular dv6000t series of mainstream laptops, which topped the NotebookReview.com Most Popular Laptops chart for quite a while. A 15.4” widescreen, consumer-oriented laptop, it delivers a solid, well-rounded package that updates the HP lineup nicely. If you need something that can last at least two hours on a charge to take notes during class, the dv6500t’s 6-cell battery more than accomplishes that. Rather than select the 12-cell which lifts the back and adds about an inch to the thickness, I opted for the “high-capacity” version of the standard 6-cell, which has a 16% increase in capacity. While word processing and moving a few files around, with wireless off and screen brightness at a lower but acceptable level, the battery lasted 4 hours and 1 minute. The 6-cell lasted for about 3 hours while watching a DVD with the screen at half brightness.

Fazit: This well-designed multimedia notebook performs well, thanks to one of Intel's latest mobile processors. A beautifully crafted consumer notebook, the new HP Pavilion dv6500t has backlit media controls and a stylish case that's made for showing off. Capable of serious work as well, it's a strong performer, yet fairly light (6.2 pounds) and easily totable. The keyboard is a tad bouncier than that of its predecessor, the dv6000t. And though bright and readable, the 15.4-inch screen tends to reflect overhead lights. Also, HP downgraded the dv6000t's 1.3-megapixel (1280-by-1024-Pixel) Webcam to 0.3 megapixels (640 by 480 resolution) on the dv6500t. These are minor nits, however. Multimedia junkies still have the HP QuickPlay feature that was found on the dv6000t. This entertainment menu launches with one tap or a swipe of the touch-sensitive strip at the top of the keyboard, letting you enjoy DVD movies, music, personal videos, and photo slide shows without booting Windows. Meanwhile, fantastic stereo speakers pump out the sound. An ExpressCard TV tuner is remains a $130 option.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100: Integrierter (onboard) Grafikchip auf Mobile Intel 965GM Chipsatz (für Merom = Core 2 Architektur). Nachfolger des GMA 950. Am interessantesten ist wohl die Integration einer voll programmierbaren Pipeline. Der Chip bietet derzeit DirectX9. Wie bei fast allen shared Memory (onboard) Grafikkarten, nutzt der GMA X3100 den Hauptspeicher und beseitzt keinen eigenen (dedizierten) Speicher.
Von den reinen Daten her sollte die Performance deutlich über der des GMA 950 liegen (erste Tests mit der Desktopkarte zeigen jedoch schlechtere Werte). Trotzdem bleibt die Leistung eher bescheiden und eignet sich nicht für Spieler. Auch ist die Treiberunterstützung (Stichwort eventuelle Grafikfehler bei Spielen) bei Intel meist nicht ideal.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Der Core 2 Duo ist ein Nachfolger von Core Duo und Core Solo mit längerer Pipeline und bis zu 20% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs ohne mehr Strom zu verbrauchen. 64-Bit EM64T Befehlserweiterung und 2 oder 4MB L2 Cache zeichnen den Prozessor mit seinen 291 Millionen Transistoren, die in 65 nm gefertig werden, aus.

15.4": 15 Zoll Display-Varianten sind der Standard und werden für mehr als die Hälfte aller Notebooks verwendet. 15.4 Zoll Displays mit 16:10 sind bei Notebook-Displays der Standard schlechthin.

Der Grund der Beliebtheit mittelgrosser Displays ist, dass diese Größe einigermaßen augenschonend ist und dennoch nicht allzu viel Strom verbraucht und die Geräte noch halbwegs kompakt sein können.

2.9 kg: Dieses Gewicht ist für Notebooks durchschnittlich. Daher passt vor allem die breite Masse der Laptops mit 15 Zoll Display in diese Gewichtsklasse.
