Most of the negative points are inherent to the 16-inch workstation form factor – size, weight, battery life – and the only real standout issue for many users that remains is the keyboard. If you're the type of user who needs a numeric keypad, then you'll be more forgiving. If you're not, it may be a deal breaker. It's a shame because there are so many good points to appreciate here. The broad customisability makes for a mobile workstation that can be tailored to suit a wide range of applications, workloads, and IT budgets. It stops frustratingly short of brilliance, but if it ticks the right boxes for your business, the Dell Pro Max 16 Plus may be the semi-portable powerhouse you were looking for.

The Dell Pro Max 16 Plus is a very powerful workstation laptop with some immense performance, plus a gorgeous 4K OLED screen and one of the best port selections you’ll find on a laptop at any price. Granted, its battery life isn’t brilliant, and it’s hideously expensive, but if you need the power this laptop can provide, it’s incredible. These business-class workstation laptops are designed for much different applications than more generalist gaming laptops, such as the Medion Erazer Beast 16 X1 Ultimate (RTX 5090) and Alienware 18-Area 51, so it seems a little odd to compare them. Nonetheless, the presence of a Core Ultra 9 285HX and Nvidia Pro RTX 5000 Blackwell makes for some of the most potent performance you’ll find on any laptop, and its 4K OLED screen is fantastic, although not as strong in raw brightness as the tandem OLED panel on the Asus ProArt P16 (4K Lumina Pro OLED).

Dell: Dell ist ein 1984 gegründeter US-amerikanischer Hersteller (Sitz Texas) von Computer-Hardware und gehört zu den grössten internationalen Herstellern sowohl in Bezug auf Marktanteile als auch hinsichtlich Notebook-Modellen. Die Produktpalette umfasst unter anderem Desktops, Notebooks, Speichersysteme, Monitore, Server, Drucker, Unterhaltungselektronik und Peripheriegeräte. Dell bietet Laptops an, die ich für verschiedene Einsatzbereiche eignen, z. B. Business-Laptops, Gaming-Laptops, Ultra-Portables und Workstations. Die Business-Notebooks von Dell aus den Latitude- und Precision-Serien sind eine Option für professionelle Anwender und Unternehmen.

2023 hatte Dell einen ungefähren Marktanteil von 17% am weltweiten PC-Absatz und war damit die Nummer 3 nach Lenovo und HP.

Für Gaming-Enthusiasten ist die Marke Alienware von Dell für Gaming-Notebooks vorgesehen.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.

Intel Arc 140V: Schnelle integrierte Grafikkarte, die in den schnelleren Intel Lunar Lake Prozessoren zum Einsatz kommt. Die 140V verfügt über 8 Xe²-Architekturkerne (Battlemage), die mit bis zu 2.050 MHz laufen, und 8 Raytracing-Einheiten. Sie ist DirectX 12 Ultimate-fähig und unterstützt alle modernen Video-Codecs. 

Intel Graphics 4-Core iGPU (Arrow Lake): Integrierte Grafikkarte basierend auf die Xe LPG Architektur (ähnlich zu den dedizierten Arc GPUs, jedoch mit Fokus auf Effizienz). Bietet 4 Xe Kerne (64 Xe Vector Engines) und 4 Raytracing Einheiten.

High-End Grafikkarten welche auch neueste und anspruchsvolle 3D-Spiele in hohen Auflösungen und Detailstufen flüssig wiedergeben können. Durch den hohen Stromverbrauch, werden diese GPUs nur in großen und schweren Notebooks mit geringen Akkulaufzeiten angeboten.

NVIDIA RTX PRO 5000 Blackwell Generation Laptop: High-End-GPU, der zur professionellen Serie von Nvidia gehört. Sie basiert auf der Blackwell Architektur und verfügt über 10.496 CUDA Rechenkerne sowie 24 GB GDDR7 ECC Speicher.

Intel Lunar Lake: Launching in September 2024 with Xe2 graphics and few CPU cores.

Core Ultra 7 268V: Ein höherwertiger Notebook-Prozessor aus der Lunar Lake-Serie. Dabei handelt es sich um ein SoC für den Einsatz in Laptops und Tablets der schlankeren Art, das über 4 brandneue E-Kerne und 4 etwas neue P-Kerne verfügt, die mit bis zu 5,0 GHz laufen, zusammen mit der vielversprechenden neuen Arc 140V iGPU und 32 GB integriertem LPDDR5x-8533 RAM. Eine neue 48 TOPS Neural Engine, TB 4 und PCIe 5 SSD Unterstützung sind ebenfalls enthalten.

Ultra 7 265U: Auf der Meteor-Lake-Architektur (Arrow Lake-U Serie) basierender High-End Mobilprozessor. Bietet 2 Performance-Kerne mit bis zu 5.3 GHz (inkl SMT) und 8+2 Effizienzkerne mit bis zu 4,2 GHz und kann daher 14 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeiten. Der Compute-Tile wird im modernen Intel 3 Prozess (5nm) hergestellt.

Ultra 9 285HX: Mobile High-End CPU für Gaming Notebooks basierend auf die Arrow Lake Architektur. Bietet 24 Kerne bestehend aus 8 schnellen Performance Kernen mit bis zu 5,5 GHz und 16 kleineren Effizienzkernen mit bis zu 4,6 GHz Taktung. Die CPU kann auf 40 MB L2-Cache und 36 MB L3-Cache zugreifen und ist spezifiziert mit einem TDP von 55 Watt. Der SoC integriert eine kleine dedizierte NPU namens AI Boost mit 13 TOPS (Int8) und unterstützt optional vPro Enterprise.

16.00: Dieser Bereich für Displayformate war und ist eine Seltenheit. Es ist größer als der allgemeine Standard von 15 Zoll, aber noch nicht im Bereich der großen Workstations. Man hat üblicherweise höhere Bildschirmauflösungen zur Verfügung, darunter leidet aber auch die Portabilität.
