Dell's Inspiron 14R gives new life to Dell's aging Inspiron budget laptop lineup. This includes some very solid performance thanks to the new Intel Core i3 dual core mobile processors, improved durability and a more comfortable keyboard design. All of these improvements are hampered though by a display where the colors quickly wash out when viewing it off center and battery life that falls below the competition.

Overall the Inspiron 14R offers a nice improvement over the previous Inspiron 14. The design is by no means striking, but is improved. The battery life does not make this a stand out laptop, but it's good enough for most people at 4 hours. The ability to configure the Inspiron 14R to your budget and needs via Dell.com is definitely a major selling point of this laptop. While there are some great 14-inch screen competitors such as the Asus UL80vt that offers 11 hours of battery life or the Acer 4820T that offers 8 hours of battery life they're harder to customize to your exact needs. There are a lot of great options in the 14-inch screen thin-and-light laptop offering lineup right now, the Inspiron 14R is not the best but if you can find it for the right price and specs that fit your needs it's definitely going to get the job done as a student laptop.

The Dell Inspiron 14z 2011 model update turns out to be a mixed bag. While it has a lot going for it in terms of interesting design, nice build quality, great blend of ports and new technologies, it also has a couple of big gotchas. The touchpad implementation is really pretty bad, making for a frustrating user experience. The amount of fan noise the N411z produced was also a major annoyance during testing. Both of those problems might be able to get resolved with some driver updates though, I literally purchased this laptop the day it came out and it tends to be the case the early adopters are the ones that get to experience the buggy drivers that are soon updated. Those cons aside, if you want a 14-inch laptop with great battery life of up to 6 hours, thin profile and quality aluminum case build, nice bright screen and a price starting just under $600 then the new Inspiron N411z update to the Inspiron 14z is an option worth considering and comparing to some other 14-inch laptops out there.

Dell: Dell ist ein US-amerikanischer Hersteller (Sitz Texas) von Computer-Hardware und gehört zu den grössten internationalen Herstellern sowohl in Bezug auf Marktanteile als auch hinsichtlich Notebook-Modellen, die im deutsch- und englisch-sprachigen Raum getestet wurden. Dell ist nach Angaben des Marktforschers IDC (Q2 2008) mit 16,4 % Marktanteil der weltweit zweitgrößte Hersteller von Personal Computern (HP 18,9 %, Acer 9,9 %, Lenovo 7,5 %). In Deutschland liegt Dell mit einem Marktanteil von 13,2 % derzeit auf Platz drei. Dell erzielte 2007 einen Umsatz von 61 Milliarden US-Dollar und beschäftigt etwa 80.000 Mitarbeiter weltweit. Diese Karten können nur sehr alte und sehr anspruchslose 3D Spiele flüssig darstellen. Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung oder (SD) Videoschnitt sind jedoch ohne große Einschränkungen möglich.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Im GM45, GS45 und GE45 Chipsatz (Montevina Plattform) integrierte shared Memory Grafikkarte von Intel. Durch höhere Taktung und mehr Shader ist sie deutlich schneller als die X3100, jedoch immer noch nicht für Spieler empfehlenswert. Kann HD-Videos (AVC/VC2/MPEG2) dekodieren und so die CPU entlasten.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: Im GL40 oder GS40 Chipsatz (Montevina Plattform) integrierte shared Memory Grafikkarte von Intel. Technisch eine geringer getaktete GMA 4500MHD (400 MHz versus 533) und durch den geringeren Takt auch kein BlueRay Logo Support.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Intel HD Graphics oder GMA HD genannte onboard Grafikkarte welche im Package der Core i3/i5/i7 Arrandale Dual-Core Prozessoren untergebracht wird. Je nach Prozessormodell maximal mit 500 bis 766 MHz getaktet (Turbo Boost). Von Lenovo anscheinend auch GMA5700MHD genannt. Die gleichgenannte Intel HD Graphics Prozessorgrafik in den Sandy Bridge Prozessoren basiert auf einer neueren Architektur.
Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.
Intel HD Graphics 3000: In Sandy Bridge Prozessoren (Core ix-2xxx) integrierte Grafikkarte von Intel. Stärkere GT2 genannte Version mit 12 Execution Units (EUs). Je nach Modell mit unterschiedlichen Taktraten (350-650MHz) und TurboBoost Unterstützung (900-1350MHz).
Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.
AMD Radeon HD 6630M: Nachfolger der langsam getakteten Mobility Radeon HD 5650 Modelle mit mehr Shader Kernen, UVD3 Videoprozessor und Eyefinity+.
Intel HD Graphics 4000: In Ivy Bridge Prozessoren (3. Generation Core) integrierte Grafikkarte in höchster Ausbaustufe. Je nach Prozessor (ULV bis Desktop Quad-Core) unterschiedlich getaktet.
Diese Grafikkarten sollten alle modernen Spiele flüssig darstellen können. Anspruchsvolle Spiele müssen jedoch in mittlerer Detailstufe gespielt werden. Ältere und weniger anspruchsvolle Spiele wie die Sims Serie können auch in hohen Detailsstufen flüssig dargestellt werden.

Intel Pentium Dual Core: Abgespeckter Core Duo mit nur 1MB L2 Cache
T4200:
Der Intel Pentium T4200 ist ein Dual-Core Einstiegs Prozessor von Intel mit jediglich 1 MB Level 2 Cache und ohne Virtualisierungsfunktionen. Dem T4200 fehlen im Vergleich zur Core 2 Duo Linie auch einige Stromsparfunktionen.
SU4100: Einstiegs Stromspar Doppelkernprozessor mit realtiv geringer Leistung durch die geringe Taktung. Durch die Pentium Marke, bietet der SU4100 ev. eingeschränkte Stromsparmechanismen.
Intel Core i3:
330M: Der Core i3-330M ist ein Mittelklasse Dual-Core Prozessor ohne Turbo Boost Modus. Daher läuft die CPU mit max. 2.13 GHz. Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-667 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). Dadurch ist der gesamte TDP von 35 Watt nicht sehr hoch.
350M: Der Core i3-350M ist ein Core i5-430M, jedoch ohne Turbo Boost und geringer getaktete GPU. Dadurch läuft die CPU mit maximal 2.26 GHz. Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-667 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). Dadurch ist der gesamte TDP von 35 Watt nicht sehr hoch.

2330M: Auf Sandy Brige Architektur basierender Doppelkernprozessor ohne Turbo (max 2.1 GHz) mit integrierter HD Graphics 3000 Grafikkarte (650-1100MHz) und integriertem DDR3 Speicherkontroller.
Intel Pentium:
P6100: Der Pentium P6100 ist ein Einstiegsdoppelkernprozessor der Arrandale Serie. Im Vergleich zum Celeron P4600 bietet der P6000 mehr Level 3 Cache; Virtualization VT-x bietet der P6100 jedoch nicht. Im Vergleich zu Core-i CPUs, fehlt Hyperthreading und TurboBoost.
Intel Core i5:
2430M: Auf Sandy Brige Architektur basierender Doppelkernprozessor mit 2.4 GHz (Turbo 2.7-3 GHz) mit integrierter HD Graphics 3000 Grafikkarte und integriertem DDR3 Speicherkontroller.
3317U:
Stromspar-Doppelkernprozessor mit nur 1.7 GHz Basisfrequenz aber einem Turbo bis zu 2.6 GHz (bei ausreichender Kühlung). Integriert die Intel HD Graphics 4000 (jedoch nur mit 350 - 1050 MHz Taktung) und einen DDR3-1600 Speicherkontroller.
Intel Core i7:
2640M: Auf Sandy Brige Architektur basierender sehr schneller Doppelkernprozessor (2,8 - 3,5GHz) mit integrierter Grafikkarte und integriertem DDR3 Speicherkontroller.
13.3: 13 Zoll ist ein häufiges, jedenfalls aber das grösste Displayformat für Subnotebooks. Der Vorteil von Subnotebooks liegt darin, dass das Notebook klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das verhältnismäßig kleine Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten ein wenig anstrengend für die Augen ist. Sehr hohe Auflösungen sind nur bedingt nutzbar. Nicht fehlsichtige Menschen sollten mit dieser Displaygröße aber zurechtkommen können.

Dieses Notebook ist etwas leichter als der Durchschnitt aller Notebooks. Für Subnotebooks ist das bereits zu schwer. 14 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.
72.76%: Diese Bewertung ist schlecht. Die meisten Notebooks werden besser beurteilt. Als Kaufempfehlung darf man das nicht sehen. Auch wenn Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich gar nicht so schlecht klingen ("genügend" oder "befriedigend"), meist sind es Euphemismen, die eine Klassifikation als unterdurchschnittliches Notebook verschleiern.
