Mit dem - man verzeihe mir den vereinfachten Namen - Vaio W11 hat Sony ein preiswertes und edel gestaltetes Netbook vorgelegt. Anspruchsvolle Nutzer werden beim W11 ein UMTS-Modem und die ultimative Ausdauer missen.

The standout feature is its 10.1-inch screen. The 1366 x 768-Pixel resolution is the sharpest we've seen on a panel of this size. Image quality is truly stunning with fantastic colour and contrast.

EN→DEWith a price that puts it at the top of the netbook market, the VAIO W had to be good. It is, but it could quite easily have been a lot better. Most disappointing is the battery life, and with rivals offering up to 8 or 9 hours between charges, it’s difficult to recommend this machine as a tool to work with when away from the office. If you’re just after a netbook for the daily commute, however, and battery life or price isn’t an issue, then it’s easy to like the VAIO W. The screen is simply stunning, and the design puts most other netbooks to shame.

EN→DESony's VAIO W is certainly a lot more affordable than their original P series netbook, but at $500 the system is still too expensive for the features that it carries. Sure, it has features such as 802.11n and Bluetooth but the main reason to look at this netbook is the 10.1-inch screen with its very high resolution and bright and colorful rendering. Of course, the glossy coating makes it hard to use and the keyboard is smaller than it could be. Sony really needs to reconsider its price or improve the design as there are better overall choices.

EN→DESony's first foray in to the world of Atom-powered laptops was the Vaio P-series Lifestyle PC, which sported a unique miniaturized design (about the same footprint as a standard business envelope), but was hampered by input issues (no touch pad), and the use of Windows Vista as its OS. Attempting to create a premium-priced version of a Netbook, Sony has added an HD display to the Vaio W. It's an attractive step-up package, but the internal components are the same as are in cheaper models.

EN→DESony has taken quite some time to get stuck in to the netbook market. With plenty of competition out there, an impressive showing is needed to mark yourself out from other models. A nice looker this W12, however looks aren’t everything and it’s a shame that Sony didn’t go for better components. Moreover, the 6-cell battery sticks out quite a bit, which may be problematic when carrying it around.

EN→DEThe Sony Vaio W is a capable netbook that gives users an attractive visual package with good specs, performance and battery life while offering a greener computing alternative. The higher price may be tough for some users to swallow, but it’s a premium paid for a green product and for what you get it isn’t a bad deal. Personally I couldn’t get over the keyboard issue, but if you can handle the keyboard key sizes and the other minor issues the Sony Vaio W Eco Series is a well equipped machine that provides a green computing experience.

EN→DESony's updated VAIO W netbook changes very little from their initial model. It uses the new Intel Atom N450 processor and GMA 3150 graphics but nothing else has really changed. It now comes with a 6-cell battery standard that helps it run longer but still average for the new class of netbooks. The display stays the same and will be the biggest draw. The flaws still exist from the original release though including a high price, small keyboard and only two USB ports.

Ein Netbook ist ein Netbook ist ein Netbook. Das ist auch bei Sony nicht anders. Über die Performance gibt es hier also nicht wirklich viel zu sagen - sie liegt ziemlich genau im Rahmen. Die Laufzeiten abseits des Stromnetzes fallen überzeugend aus. Ein paar Besonderheiten weist das kleine weiße VAIO neben seinem schicken Design aber dennoch auf.

Das Sony Vaio VPCW21M2E punktet vor allem mit seinem hochwertigen und hochauflösenden Bildschirm. In den anderen Disziplinen, die für Netbooks besonders wichtig sind - etwa Akkulaufzeit und Tastaturqualität -, gehörte es nicht zu den Top-Produkten, leistete sich hier aber auch keine Schwächen. Wer ein Netbook sucht, das sich beim Bildschirm und dem Design vom Standard abhebt, ist daher mit dem Sony Vaio VPCW21M2E gut bedient.

Optisch hat uns das Sony Vaio VPC-W21C7E/G Netbook sehr gut gefallen und auch die Verarbeitung des Netbooks konnte überzeugen. Weit weniger angetan waren wir von den sehr klein geratenen Tasten der Tastatur und der doch recht kurzen Akkulaufzeit. Andere Netbooks erledigen ihre Sache in diesen beiden Punkten doch einiges besser.

Sony: Die Sony Corporation ist der zweitgrößte japanische Elektronikkonzern mit Sitz in Tokio. Kerngeschäft ist die Unterhaltungselektronik. Das Unternehmen wurde 1946 unter anderem Namen gegründet und produzierte anfangs Reiskocher. Das Unternehmen brachte das erste Transistorenradio auf den Markt. 1958 wurde die Firma in Sony umbenannt. Sony ist eine Kombination aus dem lateinischen Wort sonus (Klang) und dem englischen Wort sonny (kleiner Junge). Sony ist ein Notebook-Hersteller mittlerer Grösse hinsichtlich internationaler Marktanteile.

Diese Karten können nur sehr alte und sehr anspruchslose 3D Spiele flüssig darstellen. Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung oder (SD) Videoschnitt sind jedoch ohne große Einschränkungen möglich.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Integrierter (onboard) Grafikchip auf Mobile Intel 945GM/C/Z/ME/ML Chipsätzen und Nachfolger des GMA 900. Kein Hardware T&L (für manche Spiele benötigt). Für Spiele kaum geeignet.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 3150: Integrierte (shared memory) Grafikkarte welche im Prozessor Intel Atom N4xx integriert ist. Basiert laut Intel auf einen "optimierten" X3100 Kern, ist jedoch nur minimal schneller als der alte GMA 950. Daher für HD Videos und 3D Spiele nicht geeignet.
3D Spiele sind auf diesen Vertretern nur in Ausnahmen spielbar, grundsätzlich sind die Grafikkarten hierfür jedoch nicht geeignet. Office Programme und Internet surfen dürfte jedoch ohne Problem laufen.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 900: Mobiler onboard (shared Memory) Grafikchip (auf Mobile Intel 915GM Chipsatz), ohne Hardware T&L - kaum spielefähig. Für Office und andere Anwendungsprogramme ohne 3D sehr gut geeignet.

Intel Atom: Die Intel Atom Serie besteht aus 64-Bit Mikroprozessoren für günstige und stromsparende Notebooks, MIDs oder UMPC. Besonderheit der Architektur, ist das die Befehle nicht wie derzeit üblich (z. B. Intel Core Architekture oder AMD Turion) "out of Order" sondern "in Order" ausgeführt werden. Dadurch verliert man zwar einiges an Performance, jedoch spart dies Transistoren und daher Kosten und dadurch auch etwas Strom.
N280: Typischer Netbook Prozessor und durch die geringe Leistung nur für Office, Web und andere einfache Applikationen sinnvoll einsetzbar. Im Vergleich zum N270 nur minimal höher getaktet, jedoch mit schnellerem FSB. Ein Celeron M mit 1.2 GHz bietet in etwa die selbe Leistung wie der N280.
N270: Stromsparende und billige CPU mit schwacher Leistung und geringem Stromverbrauch. Durch die in-order Ausführung der Befehle langsamer als gleichgetaktete Pentium M / Core Solo / Celeron M.
N450: Intel Atom CPU für Netbooks mit integriertem DDR2 Speichercontroller und GMA 3150 Grafik. Die Leistung ist nur etwas besser eine Kombination aus N270 / GMA950, jedoch ist der gesamte Stromverbrauch deutlich besser. Die Leistung ist daher immer nur vergleichbar mit einem alten 1.2 GHz Pentium 3M.
N470: Kommende Atom CPU für Netbooks (höher getakteter N450) mit integriertem DDR2 Speichercontroller und GMA 3150 Grafik. Die Leistung der CPU ist anscheinend nur etwas besser als die des Atom Z450, jedoch ist der gesamte Stromverbrauch deutlich besser. Die Leistung ist daher immer nur einfache Aufgaben ausreichend (Office, Surfen).
10.1: Es handelt sich um ein kleines Displayformat für Subnotebooks bzw. sind 10 Zoll das Standardformat für Netbooks. Der Vorteil der Mini-Notebooks liegt darin, dass das Gerät klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das vergleichsweise kleine Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten relativ anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen sind nur bedingt nutzbar wegen zu kleiner Schrift- und Icongröße.

Dieses Subnotebook/Netbook/UMPC, sofern man es als solches überhaupt bezeichnen kann, gehört zu den leichtesten Notebooks überhaupt und kann klarerweise hervorragend getragen werden. Es gibt kaum Sub-Notebooks, aber ein paar Netbooks in dieser extremen Gewichtsklasse. 7-9 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.
2.2 kg:
Diese Subnotebooks sind deutlich leichter als der Durchschnitt aller Notebooks, stellen aber die höhere Gewichtsklasse unter den Subnotebooks dar. 13 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.
66.79%: Diese Bewertung ist schlecht. Die meisten Notebooks werden besser beurteilt. Als Kaufempfehlung darf man das nicht sehen. Auch wenn Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich gar nicht so schlecht klingen ("genügend" oder "befriedigend"), meist sind es Euphemismen, die eine Klassifikation als unterdurchschnittliches Notebook verschleiern.
