Acer Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C09S

If you’ve been tempted by the simplicity and hassle-free nature of Chrome OS but wanted a bigger screen, then the Acer Chromebook 15 is for you. We do wish Acer had been more ambitious, opting for a brighter, higher quality, higher resolution screen, even if this had pushed up the price, rather than retreading old ground and taking the easy way out.

Chromebook isn’t for everyone, particularly those people who need to use legacy applications. For the rest, if whatever you need works in the browser, you’re set for Chrome OS. Perhaps Acer’s hunk, or something smaller.

The Acer Chromebook 15 is a solid computing device, with great value for its $350 price tag. The thick plastic chassis not only looks great, but offers a level of durability and build quality that isn’t often seen at this price range. The 15.6-inch FHD display might not be perfect, but 1080p resolution is another nice boon at this price. Not too mention the laptop’s long lasting battery life and strong performance with its fifth generation Intel Celeron CPU.

The model I tested retails for $350, a fair price for what you get given the rest of the Chromebook market. It’s worth noting though $250 will get you the same body without the HD screen. However, given that the screen is the main selling point here, it’s hard to take the cheaper model with its 1366 x 768 pixel display seriously. A screen this big should be stuffed with pixels.

The Acer Chromebook 15 (CB5-571-C09S) may be the largest model ever, but when you boil it down, that's really all it has to offer. Otherwise, it offers a standard Chromebook experience, just with a larger display and chassis. If you've been feeling cramped by the small size of most models, then perhaps this is the system for you. For most shoppers, however, I'd recommend looking at other Chromebooks with unique features, as there are plenty of systems in this price range that offer more compelling takes on the basic Chromebook, like the Toshiba CB35-B3340 Chromebook 2, which has a 13-inch full HD display and Skullcandy audio, or the Editors' Choice HP Chromebook 11 (Verizon LTE), which offers more mobility, thanks to wireless data.

The Acer Chromebook 15 is a excellent Chrome OS laptop, but it asks you whether you need a machine this big just to run a Chrome browser? For most people, that answer would be no, but I would easily pick this machine over any budget 15.6-inch Windows laptop. It's simply better built and comes at a better price to boot. The 15-inch display on this laptop itself would even be worth the $349 or £249 (about AU$458) price of admission.

Acer has a history of building excellent Chromebooks. That may be due of experience; it was, along with Samsung, one of the first two manufacturers to jump on board. And the Chromebook 15 continues the company’s record of hits. Aside from the design, which may appear gaudy to some, there’s a lot to like and little to complain about. The display is excellent, battery life is respectable, and performance is excellent.

Acer Chromebook 15 CB5-571-362Q

Is the Acer Chromebook perfect? To put it flatly, no. If we were sourcing the parts, we would have specified a better, slightly higher-res screen, a Core i3 CPU with 4GB of RAM, 32GB of onboard storage, and much better speakers and sound engineering. Of course, then it would be a $400 or $500 Chromebook. For $199, we’re happy to live with its shortcomings in order to be able to afford one (or even two) extra Internet devices around the house.

Acer Chromebook 15 Review: Greater Than The Sum of its Parts

For Acer to take a bunch of standard stuff and put it together in a way that makes a stellar experience is what underlies the beauty of the entire Chromebook experience. Simple hardware, streamlined software, and speedy experiences at low prices. In the landscape of Pixelbooks, it can be easy to forget this nuance. Acer has not and has delivered on all the things that make Chromebooks great.

At the end of the day, the Chromebook 15 isn’t a very good computer. But it’s at least an okay Chromebook, and due to its unique size, there will likely always be a place for it somewhere in the pantheon of Chromebooks, even if it’s ultimately still somewhat underpowered.

With its aluminum skin, bright full HD touch screen, and comfy keyboard, the latest Acer Chromebook 15 makes a surprisingly strong argument for ditching a Windows laptop and going Chrome. The Pentium CPU holds back performance but enables impressive battery life.

Acer Chromebook 15 CB515-1HT-P099

Hands-On-Artikel von Jagadisa Rajarathnam Acer Chromebook 15 CB515-1HT Acer’s latest Chrome OS effort is a proper beast, designed to live happily on a desk and occasionally be carried around the home. With the catchy full title of Chromebook 15 CB515-1HT, this 15.6-inch laptop serves up Full HD visuals and impressive usability. Users will be glad to hear that these features require a low asking price. With a meaty 15.6-inch chassis, that’s more reminiscent of Acer’s affordable Windows laptops. This machine breaks the scales at almost 2 kg, so user will certainly notice when it’s stashed in their knapsack. Like the Acer Chromebook 14 before it, this notebook sports a silver design that’s not too far off Apple’s MacBook stylings. Of course, as this is a budget-friendly laptop, users don’t get a premium metal chassis. However, the Chromebook 15’s plastic frame feels sturdy. It wasn’t too bothered at being chucked in a bag and generally knocked around. Acer has stuffed an Intel Pentium N4200 chipset into the Chromebook 15, backed by 4 GB of RAM. This proved to be absolutely fine for playing around with several apps at once. A user can stream HD videos at the same time as messing around in a web browser and messaging mates with no sign of a slowdown. That 15.6-inch IPS touchscreen is rather good for the asking price. For one, the touch controls work well. A user can zip through web pages and documents quickly and easily while selecting text is a doddle. The display also supports multi-touch, for pinch zooming. Viewing angles are rather narrow, as the picture darkens once users tilt the screen away from their face. Thankfully the Chromebook 15’s hinge allows a user to tilt the display all the way back, 180 degrees until the lid is touching their desk. So the user shouldn’t have any trouble finding a comfortable working position. Despite the beefy build, connectivity is pretty much standard. A user gets a pair of full-sized USB 3.0 ports and a couple of Type-C USB ports, split between the two sides for an easy life. Besides that, all users get a microSD memory card (for expanding the 64 GB of storage) and a Kensington lock slot. There’s no dedicated video output, although a user can always hook up a monitor or TV using one of those Type-C ports. If a user is after a Chrome OS machine to carry around all day, then the Chromebook 15 is far from the best choice. Acer and rivals such as Asus have launched plenty of Chrome notebooks that are more compact and considerably lighter. However, as a simple device for the family to share, the Chromebook 15 is perfectly fine. Strong usability means staying productive and browsing the web is a breeze, while the Full HD screen is good enough for kicking back with a movie. Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam Lenovo Yoga C630-13Q50 WOS The Lenovo Yoga C630-13Q50 WOS is Lenovo’s latest Snapdragon-powered laptop. Running off Qualcomm’s shiny new Snapdragon 850 CPU, like the competing Asus VivoBook S, it aims to offer regular travelers a portable laptop with a marathon-long 25-hour battery life. The ‘WOS’ stands for ‘Windows on Snapdragon’ just to help make sure user know what they are getting: a processor designed by Qualcomm, best known for its mobile chips, which offers always-on internet and longer battery life than competing Intel devices. At just 125.5 mm thick and 1.2 kg, this is undeniably slender. It doesn’t feel flimsy or cheap though. The aluminium body emphasizes that this is a high-end device, as does the thinly-bezel display (except for the big gap below the screen). The C630 WOS is an impressively slim, lightweight design, which is kind of a necessary prerequisite for Lenovo’s ambitions that this is an always-on, always-connected device that users take with them on the go. The C630 packs in a 13.3-inch Full HD IPS touchscreen, despite its diminutive form factor. It’s crisp and bright, with vibrant colors and quick responses. It’s also compatible with the Lenovo Pen (sold separately) and Windows Ink if a user wants to use a stylus with it. The 1080p touch panel looked to display suitably vibrant and accurate colors to the naked eye. Lenovo isn’t listing the device as being Dolby Vision capable as it is with the C930, but at this price that’s more than forgivable. Qualcomm boasts that the new Snapdragon 850 chip offers 30 percent better performance and 20 percent better battery life and internet speeds over the Snapdragon 835, so this could be a substantial leap. In practice, it’s pretty close to the 845, the current flagship mobile chip, but is tuned slightly faster, along with improved thermal management and battery capacity thanks to the optimization for larger Windows devices. Beyond the main chip, the C630 comes with 8 GB of RAM, along with 256 GB of storage. The operating system will also in part be down to the fact that the laptop comes with Windows 10 S installed. This will be a sticking point for some buyers, however. Windows 10 S is a stripped-down version of Microsoft’s OS, which limits a user to using apps from the Windows Store. If a user uses any form of freeware that doesn’t feature in there then they won’t be able to run it on the Yoga C630 WOS out of the box. A user has the usual Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0, along with two USB-C ports (one for charging) and a headphone jack. The lack of USB-A, HDMI, or even a MicroSD slot is a bit limiting but increasingly common in small form-factors. The battery is the other area that Qualcomm and Lenovo are both keen to hype up when it comes to the C630. The first wave of Snapdragon devices promised battery lives of 20 hours or more, but Lenovo claims its latest laptop can handle 25 hours or more on one charge. As a conclusion, it looks like the C630 could be a great all-rounder. If its battery life claims ring true and don’t mind the limitations of Windows 10 S, then the Yoga C630 WOS could be a great option for students or those who travel regularly. Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam Lenovo Yoga C630-13Q50 WOS Das Lenovo Yoga C630-13Q50 WOS ist Lenovos jüngster Snapdragon-Laptop. Hands-On-Artikel von Jagadisa Rajarathnam Dell XPS 15 9570-CPC1J The Dell XPS 15 9570-CPC1J has the same great XPS design and build, slightly refined again for the modern laptop user. With the refresh of its XPS 15 line-up, Dell has brought a 15.6-inch laptop that manages to cram inside a ton of performance hardware without getting bulky or too heavy. It’s more powerful than ever before and can surprisingly last even longer on a single charge. Not much at all about the XPS 15 design identity has changed. The product still comes wrapped in an aluminium unibody shell with a carbon fibre keyboard deck, connected by a single, sturdy hinge. The size of the laptop is light and compact for a 15.6-inch laptop. The entire thing is between 0.45 and 0.66 inch (11 mm and 17 mm) thick thanks to the wedge shape. Models start at four pounds (1.8 kg), but that's for a non-touch display and smaller 56 Wh battery. Most will experience the 4.5 pounds (2.0 kg) of the larger battery and 4K display. Dell sets its premium laptop design apart partially through the ports that the greater dimensions allow for it to maintain while others trudge on into that USB-C dongle domination. For instance, the Dell XPS 15 features a full-size SD card slot, HDMI and USB 3.1 where the MacBook Pro sticks to four Thunderbolt 3 ports. Anyone who thinks the display is at the top when making a laptop checklist will find it hard to be disappointed with the XPS 15. The XPS 15 features a 15.6-inch display in 1080p at a 1500:1 contrast ratio, 100 percent Adobe RGB color accuracy, and an anti-reflective finish to cut down on glare. Sure, it will drain the battery faster, but it will look stunning in the process. A user can expect reliable, strong performance out of the XPS 15 in both general and intense tasks, from gaming to video rendering and everything in between. The XPS 15 is powered by an Intel Core i7-8750H processor, an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics card with 4096 MB GDDR5 VRAM, 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD. It is a powerhouse for media editing, just don’t expect to play the latest and best PC games on the Dell XPS 15, especially not at 4K. At most, a user will be able to play at 1080p resolution at middle settings to produce a smooth and playable experience. Dell has managed to considerably improve upon battery life year after year with the XPS 15. However, at 4 hours and 11 minutes of general use, the XPS 15 won’t last you all day. Thus, it is recommended to bring a power adapter if a user wants to be out all day. Though showing its age, Dell's XPS 15 is still the sleekest desktop replacement on the market, from its terrific 4K touchscreen to its beefy six-core CPU. It's a great pick for everything from video editing to 1080p gaming. Hands-On-Artikel von Jagadisa Rajarathnam HP Pavilion 15-CS0007NS The HP Pavilion has always offered great laptops at low prices to those who prefer to own a decent budget laptop to spend a fortune on one. There are always new models every year which look almost identical to their predecessor but with better and more modern hardware configurations. And this year is no difference. The HP Pavilion 15-CS0007NS is the latest model in the series, and the budget laptop community may like what the new laptop has to offer. The new HP Pavilion 15-CS0007NS measures at 17.9 x 361.6 x 245.6 mm and weighs about 1.85 kilograms. Its near-lightweight size is indeed something that most mobile users will enjoy as it looks to be pretty easy to carry around. The HP Pavilion 15-CS0007NS is powered by the newest 4-core Intel Core i7-8550U. This latest 4-core CPU also comes with an 8 MB cache, and with the famed Turbo Boost technology. It has a 1.8 GHz base frequency and can run at a maximum speed of 4 GHz. Even though the HP Pavilion 15-CS0007NS is marketed as a mid-range laptop, users will also be able to run power-hungry software like video editing software on this laptop relatively well. It is also a pleasant surprise to see that the HP Pavilion 15-CS0007NS comes equipped with a graphics card, albeit just an entry-level card. The new laptop comes bundled with an Nvidia GeForce MX150 with dedicated 4 GB of DDR5 VRAM. The entry-level card will let the users enjoy low-spec games that may include older titles and also some newer indie games. Hewlett-Packard also included another nice surprise for users, and that is the 256 GB of SSD storage. While it is a little disappointing to see that a 1 TB HDD was not included to complement the SSD drive, the price point of the HP Pavilion 15-CS0007NS justifies the decision of excluding a conventional HDD. Those who would like to expand their storage may try to do so with the multi-format SD-card reader that is also included in the laptop. The laptop also comes with two 4 GB DDR4 RAM sticks with an option to upgrade it to a total of 16 GB. There are only two slots for the memory though, and the user will have to sacrifice at least one of the installed memory sticks if they choose to upgrade. A downside to the HP Pavilion 15-CS0007NS is its lack of ports for connectivity. There are two USB 3.1 Type A ports, one USB 3.1 Type C port, one HDMI output and as mentioned before, one SD card reader. It has an Ethernet port and as per the norm with modern laptops, a dual-band WiFi and Bluetooth 4.2 combo adapter. As mentioned, the HP Pavilion is a low to mid-range series of laptops, but it is nice to see that the HP Pavilion 15-CS0007NS has a good hardware specification for its price point. For those who do not need fancy extra features on their laptop, this will prove to be a great purchase. Hands-On-Artikel von Jagadisa Rajarathnam LG Gram 13Z980-G The world will never run out of the need to have ultra-lightweight laptops to satisfy one’s daily requirements of travelling further and longer each day. And especially for one that looks as sleek as the new LG Gram 13Z980-G. While LG doesn’t have a lot of laptops and notebooks under their brand, the laptops from their Gram lineup are actually aimed at the community whose first requirement is for a ‘light’ laptop. All of LG’s notebooks from this series weigh under one kilogram. This 13.3” laptop measures at 15.5 x 306 x 212 mm and weighs only 965 grams. Its light weight gives the LG Gram 13Z980-G a considerable advantage over most of the bulky laptops in the market. It should be on the shortlist for someone who is looking for a laptop that is light and easy to carry around. Even though the LG Gram 13Z980-G may look like it was designed with business users in mind, it is not without its own fancy features. The laptop's keyboard comes with a backlight with two different brightness levels to adapt to the current working environment. This is especially useful for users who may need to work in a darkened room. The laptop also comes with a fingerprint scanner for security and users can use it to start, unlock or wake the laptop from sleep mode. The LG Gram 13Z980-G is equipped with the latest Intel Core i5-8250U. This 4-core processor has 6 MB of cache and a clock speed of 1.6 GHz, and with Intel’s Turbo Boost technology, the processor can achieve a maximum speed of 3.4 GHz. This eighth-generation i5 will prove to be relatively fast and efficient, though it might run a little slow for more demanding programs. Even though it is expected, especially on thin laptops like the LG Gram 13Z980-G, it is still a little disappointing to see that the laptop doesn’t come with at least a dedicated entry-level graphics card. The LG Gram 13Z980-G comes equipped with an integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620. Users who like to play occasional games will be delighted to know that they can still play some casual indie games with this laptop. As for ports and connectivity, there really isn’t anything new or exciting with the LG Gram 13Z980-G, except for the Miracast wireless connection that it comes with. This will be great for those who prefer to cast their screen to a bigger screen. Other than that, the laptop also comes with three USB 3.0 ports (including one that is Type-C and doubles as a DisplayPort), one HDMI output, one Gigabit Ethernet port, dual-band WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1 combo adapter, and an audio jack. The thinness and the lightness of the LG Gram 13Z980-G are its most significant selling points. Add in the latest eighth-generation i5 CPU and an 8 GB RAM, this laptop is a no-brainer for those who require or prefer ease-of-mobility with their laptop.

Most smartphones and only a few tablets fall into this weight category. Only a few smartphones are heavier and should rather be considered tablets.
