Overall, I’m pretty pleased with the Predator 17X. It hangs right with the competition in performance and its easy-peasy 4GHz overclock ramps up performance nicely. Its fan acoustics are downright impressive, too. At stock speeds, this laptop doesn’t get annoyingly loud, and only with the CPU and GPU overclocked do the fans become noticeable. I can’t say the same for the Predator 17, which was loud under most loads.

The Acer Predator 17, when we reviewed it last year, won our editor’s choice award. It remains our favorite gaming laptop. The Acer Predator 17 X harnesses many of the same advantages. It’s attractive, well-built, enjoyable to use on a day-to-day basis, and more portable than you’d expect, given the hardware.

However, the Predator 17X offers a desktop-like gaming experience, which other competing notebooks rarely do. It packs an outstanding cooling system that supports the Core i7-6820HK and GTX 980 while utilizing their full potential via overclocking. Unfortunately, there’s one downside in all of this and it can be considered as a big one for some users. The Predator 17X doesn’t have an iGPU (no Intel HD Graphics 530 inside the Core i7-6820HK) so this can mean only one thing – reduced battery life. If you recall, the standard version of the Predator 17 offered more than satisfying battery runtimes with the same 88.8Wh unit.

The Predator 17X is a much better version of the standard Predator 17 configuration in every way possible. But this, of course, comes at a price… a very big one. While the 17X retains that rigid and subjectively good looking chassis, it’s considerably heavier and bulkier. Still, we can’t miss mentioning the updated keyboard and touchpad RGB LED backlight, which is now programmable to better serve your taste.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M: Schnelle Notebook-Grafikkarte der High-End-Klasse aus der GeForce-GTX-900M-Baureihe. Basiert auf dem Maxwell-Chip GM204.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.
