Do those eyebrow-raising benchmark results make the Apple MacBook Pro a must-buy, though? For this conclusion, I’m going to break out the old “it depends” epithet. Most people don’t need this much GPU compute power or sheer CPU grunt, and will be better served by purchasing an M5 15in MacBook Air. That laptop will do most of the stuff the M5 Pro MacBook Pro can, but at around half the cost. If you need to run your laptop at full gas, a MacBook Pro should be your weapon of choice as the extra cooling will help it keep going for longer. But either way, you won’t need an M5 Pro.

Overall, I have very few complaints about the MacBook Pro. It’d be nice if it were a bit lighter or if the battery life were better, but neither of these is a dealbreaker in my eyes (and if they are dealbreakers for you, there are other laptops out there that can best the Pro on battery life and/or weight). In most cases, the extra benefits, features, and power of the MacBook Pro will outweigh these two drawbacks. When I reviewed the M5 MacBook Air, I called it the laptop for getting stuff done. It’s a real workhorse laptop and a great option for most people. The MacBook Pro, on the other hand, is the ultimate professional machine that can power through everything you throw at it. It’s total overkill and beyond what most people need, but when you push it to the limit, it’s a sweet feeling.

Das getestete Modell des Apple MacBook Pro 16 Zoll M5 Max kam mit besonders üppiger Ausstattung (Z1N1-13101000, 128 Gigabyte Arbeitsspeicher, 4 Terabyte SSD-Speicher). Die Standardausstattung ist deutlich günstiger; sie bringt 48 Gigabyte Arbeitsspeicher und 2 Terabyte SSD-Speicher mit. Das spart knapp 2.000 Euro und dürfte selbst für echte Power-User ausreichen. Ein Kritikpunkt bleibt: Auch das MacBook Pro 16 Zoll von 2026 lässt sich nach dem Kauf nicht aufrüsten.

Eine Server-Version des Open-Source-Models von OpenAI läuft auf der Maschine ohne Probleme, lediglich die Lüfter drehen für eine kurze Zeit höher. Als Nutzer bemerkt man nicht, dass der Prozessor und dessen Grafikeinheiten im Hintergrund schwere Laste stemmen. Wenn Sie beruflich mit KI arbeiten, ist der Aufpreis von rund 2.000 Euro für den Max-Prozessor eine Überlegung wert.

In the title of this review, I said that “this is better than your desktop,” which might be a bit of an overstatement for a small number of you. Yes, if you’ve got a top-end spec Mac Studio with the M3 Ultra, that statement is less definitive. But I know that folks who bought that machine probably didn’t all get it fully tricked out. A majority of people are using older desktop computers, and I’m certain a large number of you are using computers much older than the M3 Ultra. So I stand by that statement with just a slight clarification: for most of you, this computer is better than your desktop — a lot better. Apple often gets a lot of flak for what is characterized as a “walled garden” approach to both its hardware and software design. I can see how PC enthusiasts, especially, probably look at what Apple does with particular disdain, as they like being able to be in control of their machines. But on the opposite side of that coin, there are clearly benefits to Apple’s approach.

The only thing you'll need to take into account is the price and availability. The M5 Max MacBook Pro is Apple’s fastest portable workstation and close to its fastest Mac. This laptop is for users who don’t want any compromises with performance–it delivers. While it provides incrementally faster CPU speed compared to the M4 Max, it does have a drastically faster SSD. For M2 or M3 Max MacBook Pro users, it’s definitely worth consideration. M4 Max owners could take a pass, but if you’re doing a lot of disk-intensive tasks, you will noticeably benefit from an upgrade. However, the rumors of the M6 MacBook Pro upgrade give buyers pause. The 20th anniversary laptop is rumored to feature an OLED touchscreen display, which would be an upgrade from the current mini LED technology, along with a new, slimmer design. If your needs aren’t pressing, it might be worth it to hold off until the end of the year.

The outside may be the same, but the internal architecture is a genuine technological shift, with the introduction of the Fusion die interconnect and the super core processor cores. The resulting performance is stunning, making this top-tier MacBook Pro a viable replacement for the Mac Studio (at least, until M5 inevitably comes to the Mac desktops). That giant 40-core GPU with built-in Neural Accelerators also makes it a powerhouse for both graphics and AI. The 27-hour battery life also surprised us, and the move to Thunderbolt 5 with individual port controllers and Wi-Fi 7 makes this the most future-proofed laptop in Apple's Mac lineup. But, let's be realistic: Even in its base model, this isn't a laptop for the masses.

High-End Grafikkarten welche auch neueste und anspruchsvolle 3D-Spiele in hohen Auflösungen und Detailstufen flüssig wiedergeben können. Durch den hohen Stromverbrauch, werden diese GPUs nur in großen und schweren Notebooks mit geringen Akkulaufzeiten angeboten.

Apple M5 Max 40-Core GPU: Eine ziemlich schnelle integrierte Grafikkarte, die von Apple entwickelt wurde und im Vollausbau des Apple M5 Max SoC integriert ist. Sie verfügt über 40 "Kerne" und hat je nach Konfiguration Zugriff auf bis zu 128 GB schnellen 614 GB/s gemeinsamen Speicher. Die GPU liegt auf einem eigenen Die der per "Fusion Architecture" verbunden wird mit der CPU.
