Overall the choices that have been made are sensible and the resulting laptop is a reasonable 30mm thick unit that weighs an acceptable 2.7kg and delivers plenty of gaming performance. Pricing is slightly on the steep side and would have felt more comfortable at £999, but the fact is that Asus charges a premium for ROG products and the market appears to be willing to pay a little extra. At the time of going to press, this model was £1,099.

Nonetheless, the keyboard additionally provides the much-desired comfort along with the responsive touchpad. The price of the machine could also be considered as an advantage as it has the same hardware as some of its competitors, but keeping way better temperatures than the Y50 and Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition. So if you are considering either the G501 or the G551, the G551 will be much more reliable while the G501 will provide better mobility due to its lightweight and thin profile.

Modell: Lautlose Kühlung und hohe Leistung sind zwei Wörter, die in der Computer-Industrie üblicherweise nicht gut zusammenpassen, doch das Asus G551JW-CN080H schafft gerade das. Der Laptop verfügt über ein Aluminium-Gehäuse, das sowohl diskret als auch modern ist. Mit subtil abgerundeten Ecken und einem schönen Scharnier-Mechanismus, verfügt das Asus G551JW-CN080H genau über jene notwendigen Elemente, um ohne den manchmal übertrieben aggressiven Aussehen einiger Gaming-Laptops klassisch zu bleiben. Die Details wurden einfach gehalten. Ein roter Streifen umgibt das gesamte Innere und sogar die vordere Abdeckung weist eine einfache, gebürstete Metalltexture auf. Das Windows-8.1-System verfügt über ein beeindruckendes Innenleben, das die Qualitätsanmutung ergänzt.

Im Herzen des  Laptops befinden sich ein Intel Core i7-4720HQ Quad-Core-Prozessor mit einer Taktrate von 2,6 GHz, bis zu 16 GB DDR3L RAM, eine NVIDIA GeForce GTX960M GPU mit entweder 2 GB oder 4 GB VRAM und ein erstaunlich schöner 15,6-Zoll-Bildschirm. Es gibt viele Speicheroptionen von 2 TB HDD, 750 GB Hybrid-Laufwerken bis zu 128 GB SSD-Kombinationen. Zu den weiteren Features zählen ein optionales optisches Laufwerk, ein Kartenleser, eine HD-Webcam, drei USB-3.0-Ports, ein HDMI-Ausgang und ein mini-DisplayPort. Mit den eingebauten Lautsprechern ist die Audioqualität gut und das Asus G551JW-CN080H ist mit einem 6-Zellen-Akku mit einer Nennkapazität von 5200 mAh ausgestattet.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.
