Die modulare Bauweise des Fairphone 6 ist absolut genial – da braucht sich kein anderer Hersteller mehr groß herauszureden. Verklebte und zertifizierte Ersatzteile sind leider auch trotz der Versuche der EU, dies zu regulieren, ein leidiges Thema auf dem Smartphonemarkt. Beim Fairphone 6 geht der Hersteller sogar so weit, dass jeder sein Smartphone mit einem Schraubendreher selbst reparieren kann. Dabei geht das augenscheinlich weder auf Kosten des Designs noch der Verarbeitung. Im Vergleich zur Konkurrenz fehlt letztendlich nur die IP68-Zertifizierung, also der perfekte Schutz vor Wasser und Staub (das Fairphone 6 hat nur die IP55-Zertifizierung). Ansonsten hat der Hersteller im Vergleich zum Vorgänger etwa beim Display nachgebessert, sodass es nun fast auf dem Niveau der normalen Konkurrenz liegt.

Das Fairphone 6 ist ein sehr gutes Smartphone geworden, dass trotz Mittelklasse-Hardware ordentliche Leistung liefert. Es ist eine merkliche Steigerung im Vergleich zum Fairphone 5, aber lohnt sich vor allem für alle, die noch mit dem Fairphone 4 von vor vier Jahren unterwegs sind.

Die Preise für die Ersatz­teile gehen bis maximal rund 90 Euro jeden­falls in Ordnung. Im Kurztest stellten wir fest: Das Gerät lässt sich tatsäch­lich leicht aufschrauben, wieder zumachen und Zubehör anbringen. Der lange Software-Support spricht eben­falls für das Gerät. Es bleibt aber ganz klar abzu­warten, wie gut das Fair­phone 6 nach Jahren der Nutzung noch mit aktu­ellerer Software performt.

So performance isn’t top of the class, battery life isn’t the most extensive and the cameras are fine but not outstanding. If you care more about any of those things, you’re better off picking up a Google Pixel 9a. The thing is, I don’t think the target audience here do care more about those things. The Fairphone 6 is something of a respite from the relentless deluge of yearly smartphone updates that offer little to no repairability, more limited software support (albeit not by much, in the case of Google, Samsung, Apple and other top players) and don’t make as big an effort to reduce and offset their environmental impact. So for those who find themselves needing a smartphone to exist in the world but are after something a little more green, I recommend the Fairphone 6. It’s better value for money than its predecessor and its efforts towards sustainability are worth the sacrifices in performance and photography.
