The smartphone is powered by a 6nm MediaTek Dimensity 810 chipset and goes up to a 2.4GHz clocking speed. The Android 11 OS is combined with Realme UI 2.0 user interface support. The Realme 9 5G is a great budget phone. A good choice in terms of both design and performance. If I were to list the elements of the Realme 9 5G that I enjoyed, I would say that the phone’s display, performance, and battery life were all great. Although the camera’s quality is mediocre, it’s not bad for the price. Some users will be disappointed by the slow charging for that big battery. The lack of Android 12 on the phone is frustrating, but this is a problem with many budget devices. Realme 9 5G, on the other hand, can play most titles at high to medium settings, making it a good choice for gamers. Despite the fact that the Realme 9 5G is not the cheapest 5G smartphone in the Indian market, it offers the optimal balance of performance and networking capability.

The Realme 9 5G has some positives. The performance is not bad for the price—the display and battery life should keep most users happy. And yes, this is a 5G ready if that matters right now to you. The selfie camera is not bad either. But the rear camera delivers an average performance in my view. The slow charging will also be a disappointment for some users. Consider the Realme 9 5G if you are looking for a 5G phone for under Rs 18,000. I would say it is better to get one with extra RAM and storage, though the 4GB RAM option costs Rs 14,999 and does make it appealing. The 6GB RAM+128GB storage option costs Rs 17,499. Other options to consider are the Redmi Note 11T, which has the same MediaTek chipset, and there’s the Poco X4 Pro 5G and Vivo T1 5G.

The Realme 9 5G Speed Edition is definitely more appealing than the standard Realme 9 5G (Review) but there's a considerable price difference. This model packs in a powerful SoC, very high refresh rate display, and big 5,000mAh battery. It also supports 30W fast charging, which is convenient. In my opinion, the base variant of the Realme 9 5G SE, which is priced at Rs. 19,999, is the one to get. This variant does not have many direct competitors and offers the maximum bang for your buck if you're looking for good performance. If you are considering the higher variant for the additional RAM, the iQoo Z5 (Review) would be a better option. It uses the same Snapdragon 778G SoC, but also has stereo speakers and faster 44W charging, for only a small bump in cost. On the other hand, if camera performance is a priority you could consider spending a little extra for the Realme 9 Pro+ 5G (Review).

Okay, time to wrap up this review of the Realme 9 Speed Edition. As I said in the intro, is this the gaming phone to get in this price range? Non-arguably the answer is Yes! We are thrilled by the level of optimization Realme has done on their end to deliver such an incredible performance. Having said that, this is by no means an all-arounder device. For a more standard workload—think music streaming, taking photographs, or texting—a more well-rounded option like the Redmi Note 11 Pro Plus would be a better bet for most.

The Realme 9 5G Speed Edition is not a bad device, but it really fails to stand out in the plethora of mid-range phones we already have. Sacrifices like an ultrawide camera and stereo speakers, which would have been much more useful than the 144Hz refresh rate and the 2MP sensors on the back, leave this phone in a space where it’s hard to recommend to people looking for a complete package. The phone, however, is still one of the cheapest Snapdragon 778G devices you can buy and that is a win. If you seek Snapdragon 700-series performance with 5G under 20,000, you can go for the Realme 9 5G Speed Edition, only if you’re okay with the compromises that it comes with.

Realme 9 5G does a lot of things well, and most things above average considering the price range. And with its more optimized Dimensity 810 SoC, performance has never remained the question. The smartphone has gone under the radar for many, but we believe it truly is a hidden gem which could be just perfect for your everyday smartphone usage. And even if you go for an occasional BGMI game or download some heavy apps temporarily, the smartphone can handle it, although at the cost of heating up. So, if you are looking for a sub-Rs. 15,000 smartphones which can do it all and with consistency, you will be hard pressed to find a better smartphone. It is definitely not a specialist smartphone with an AMOLED display like Poco M4 Pro, great camera like Realme 8i or a gaming focus like Vivo U20, but that is a good thing as people rarely want a one trick pony in the budget segment, and such amazing features cannot be availed without some significant cost-cutting in other areas. Our verdict, this smartphone is truly the underrated budget king.

The 6GB RAM variant of the Realme 9 5G is priced at Rs. 17,499, while an equally spec'd variant of the Realme 8s 5G would cost just Rs. 500 more. The latter would offer better value as it has a higher-resolution 64-megapixel camera and 33W fast charging. The base variant of the Realme 9 5G is priced at Rs. 14,999 and is better value for money than the one I tested. If you are a casual user, you could consider this, but I would recommend you take a look at the Redmi Note 11 instead as it has an AMOLED display, stereo speakers, and 33W charging. It lacks 5G, but none of the network providers in India even offer this right now, so it might not be a massive loss.

The realme 9 5G comes with Android 11 out-of-the-box with older realme UI 2.0 based. You will find a handful of realme smartphones running the newer realme UI version 3.0, including its Pro variant, the realme 9 Pro 5G. Moving to its battery, the phone packs a 5,000 mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging support. The price for the 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage variant starts at ₹14,999 and ₹17,499 for its 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage variant. What’s interesting is its Ripple Holographic Design, it gives stunning light reflections (Stargaze White) while the Dimensity 810 processor is an upgrade from its predecessor, the rest seems to be identical to the realme 8 5G. You can, however, grab the same 6 GB + 128 GB variant of its sibling realme 9 Pro 5G by adding ₹500 to get better overall specs.

The Realme 9 5G is made of plastic, and while the build quality is fine, it isn't especially impressive at first touch. Unlike previous models, there's no attention-grabbing design flair here. The phone is available in Stargaze White and Meteor Black. The former finish, which is what I have with me, catches the light at certain angles and refracts pinkish-yellowish tones, while the latter is plain and simple. This phone is 8.5mm thick and weighs a reasonable 188g. The rear panel curves on the sides to meet the plastic frame, making this phone relatively comfortable to hold and use. The fingerprint sensor is integrated into a recessed power button which is within reach. You'll find volume buttons and the SIM tray on the left (with two Nano-SIM slots and a microSD card slot). The bottom has a USB Type-C port, 3.5mm audio socket, and speaker. The Realme 9 5G isn't going to turn any heads in terms of design. It also doesn't have the sort of specifications that will immediately draw people in.

Realme has made a safe bet with its latest contender, the Realme 9 5G. In fact, the handset’s specs are nothing to write home about but despite that, the handset is still a viable contender in the budget segment. While I would’ve liked to see a more capable camera array as well as a fancier design, users opting for the phone will find the Realme 9 5G’s performance, display quality, and software experience up to the required standard. It remains to be seen how well Xiaomi and POCO respond to Realme’s continuous bombardment of products below the Rs 15,000 mark. Do let us know in the comments below of what you make of Realme’s latest and for everything tech, stay tuned to our blog.
