Overall, despite a few quirks, the U6S proves a better-than-average notebook with a unique look and several useful built-in features; it’s also relatively affordable too for an ultra-portable. Nonetheless, given the system’s weight and poor battery life, it’s not exactly what we’d call an ideal traveling companion. Think of the laptop instead as semi-portable, and award it style points as well as props for its four USB ports, HDMI port and optical drive – features you don’t often see in this sort of system. In short, if you’re looking for something a bit different than the typical OEM PC, the U6S won’t disappoint, but if you’re looking for maximum portability, well… consider looking elsewhere.

Klein aber oho

Langsam aber sicher schwappt der Trend zum Subnotebook von Asien auf Europa über. Reicht schon eines der neuen preiswerten Exemplare, oder muss man immer noch viel Geld in wenig Rechner investieren? In Sachen Handlichkeit muss es den teureren Subnotebooks von Sony und mehr noch von Toshiba den Vortritt lassen. In der Ausstattung kann der Windows-Vista-Mobilrechner dagegen glänzen.

Viele Facetten am schmucken Asus U6S konnten uns durchaus begeistern. Allen voran das schnörkellose Design mit hochwertigen Materialien wie etwa den großzügigen Echtleder Einsätzen. Aber auch abseits der Gestaltung liefert das U6S viele Gründe die für das kompakte Notebook sprechen. Beispielsweise die Anschlussausstattung mit insgesamt vier USB Ports und volldigitalem HDMI Port oder die angebotenen Kommunikationsmodule wie etwa WLAN Standard-n, Gigabit Ethernet und Bluetooth. Den „Luxus“ eines Firewire Ports und einer Docking Schnittstelle hätte man sich dennoch leisten können. Neben durchaus angenehm zu bedienenden Eingabegeräten mit teils etwas gewöhnungsbedürftiger Anordnung verfügt das Asus U6S auch über ein äußerst helles LED Display, welches jedoch aufgrund seiner spiegelnden Oberfläche im Outdoor Einsatz bei besonders hellen Umgebungslichtbedingungen nicht ganz souverän abschneidet. Die Performance des Notebooks hingegen kann sich sehen lassen.

ASUS U6S Notebook

As you can see, the Ultraportable of today is able to beat the workhorse of yesterday in anything except for gaming. Thats not to say that you wont be able to play games on the U6S. We fired up Counterstrike and got a reasonable frame rate of 35 fps. Just dont expect it to play Crysis, but new RTS and RPG games should be playable. Overall, the U6S is definitely the most feature-rich ultra-portable we have received in our labs. It packs more features and performance with a 12.1" frame than most notebooks do in 15.4" space. Combining that with the beauty that the U6S is, we have no problems recommending it to anyone looking for an ultra-portable.

Overall, the ASUS U6 is a wonderful notebook packed with numerous features and power in a small sophisticated package. The functionality of the unit and pure elegance of this laptop undoubtedly outweigh the weakness of a below average battery life, but you may find yourself wishing for more RAM in short order. With all of the computing capabilities at a reasonable $1699.99, this is definitely a laptop to seriously consider if you’re in the market for a full-featured ultraportable.

The ASUS U6S is a great mix of performance and size offering a lot of power in a small package. The LCD is very nice, sturdy and bright, the keyboard isn't soft and pliable like other small notebooks and the looks of the U6S should appeal to just about everyone. The only downside is the batter life - it just doesn't fit with the rest of the notebook and we expected we more than the 2.5 hours or so we got. If you don't think that's an issue for you though, the U6S could make a great mobile productivity machine.

In ultraportables alone, the company has four different lines, with countless sub-models belonging to each. The ASUS U6S is a third option if you're trying to decide between the Dell M1330 and the Sony SZ791N. But consider buying a second battery before you take the plunge.

The ASUS U6S-A1 is somewhat of a surprisingly system. It is marketed as a luxury ultraportable because of its unique exterior shell design and the leather palm rest, but it really shines as a high performance ultraportable. There are some drawbacks to this, particularly in the battery life, but it is something that many can easily live with.

The leather-clad Asus U6S is an ultraportable that will require you to tote around a little extra weight in return for its power and ports. It carries a fair price, but we would like it more if the battery ran longer.

Overall, the ASUS U6S is a great notebook that speaks of refinement and quality. From the deep, shimmering paint scheme and genuine leather accents to the no-compromise specifications and refined manners, the U6S is unmistakably a luxury device. Just about the only thing that doesn't scream of excess and indulgence is the U6S's modest price of $1649.99. Yes, the U6S does have below average battery life for an ultra portable, but don't let that scare you away. With so many advantages, you may well be able to overlook the U6S' one weakness and enjoy one of the best values in the luxury notebook niche. It's clear that ASUS' wide exposure to the notebook retail market is long overdue and the U6S is evidence that they have something special to offer.

What isn’t missing are the little extras that separate a luxury marque from a mass-market manufacturer. Asus includes not one but two Targus cases with the U6S: A ballistic nylon shoulder tote and a suede-like slip case. You also get a sharp-looking Bluetooth travel mouse, and Asus backs the system with a 2-year global hardware warranty (1 year on the battery) with free two-way overnight shipping, a 30-day Zero bright-dot warranty on the LCD, and 24/7 tech support. Laptops purchased in North America are also covered by the company’s accidental damage warranty that covers damage from spills, electrical surges, fire, or drops for one year. That sort of peace of mind is its own reward—as is carrying one of the best-looking ultraportables on the market today. Just have pity for the other road warriors stuck with those boring fleet-purchase PCs.

Asus nos ha demostrado que no solo sabe cómo fabricar portátiles, de hecho le fabrica a muchas otras marcas, pero también nos viene demostrando que sabe como diseñarlos. Su gama alta es excelente en todos los aspectos, también su gama para gamers destaca por los elementos utilizados, pero aun Asus tiene que mostrarnos que son capaces de realizar un portátil ultraligero y de bajo consumo con grandes funciones de conectividad como en este U6S. Lo cierto es que, como ya hiciera el U3S, el U6S nos ha enamorado en el laboratorio. Sus acabados, sus prestaciones, hasta su pantalla de iluminación perfecta, hacen de él un portátil del que su dueño podrá presumir en público.

NVIDIA GeForce 9300M G: Überarbeiteter 8400M GS Chip, der weiterhin in 65nm gefertigt wird und durch kleinere Optimierungen eine etwas bessere Performance zeigt.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders die DirectX 10 fähigen Vertreter (8400M, HD 2400) sind nicht in der Lage ihre DirectX 10 Effekte (bei hohen Details) flüssig darzustellen.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Core Duo Nachfolger mit längerer Pipeline und 5-20% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs bei 0.5 - 3 Watt mehr Stromverbrauch.

Der Notebook Core 2 Duo ist baugleich mit den Desktop Core 2 Duo Prozessoren, jedoch werden die Notebook-Prozessoren mit niedrigeren Spannungen und geringerem Frontsidebus Takt betrieben. Von der Leistung bleiben gleichgetaktete Notebooks deswegen (und auch wegen der langsameren Festplatten) 20-25% hinter Desktop PCs.

12.1": Es handelt sich um das häufigste Displayformat für Subnotebooks. Es stellt die durchschnittliche Grösse für Subnotebooks dar.

Der Vorteil von Subnotebooks liegt darin, dass das ganze Notebook klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das winzige Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten sehr anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen sind fast nicht nutzbar.

1.61 kg: Diese Subnotebook ist deutlich leichter als der Durchschnitt aller Notebooks, und stellen eine mittlere Gewichtsklasse unter den Subnotebooks dar. 11 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.

Asus: Asus ist ein internationaler Hersteller mittlerer Grösse. Im deutsch- und englischsprachigen Raum werden in jüngerer Zeit sehr viele Notebook-Modelle von Asustec getestet. Allerdings schafften es in diesen Tests bisher relativ wenige Modelle in Top-Positionen bzgl. Gesamtwertung und Preis/Leistungs-Bewertung.

79.22%: Weltbewegend ist diese Bewertung nicht. Man muss bedenken, dass es kaum Notebooks gibt, die unter 60% erhalten. Dieses Notebook wird von den Testern eigentlich als unterdurchschnittlich angesehen, eine Kaufempfehlung kann man nur mit viel Wohlwollen darin sehen.
