It’s this not-quite-there feeling throughout that leaves us scratching our heads. We commend Sony for trying to innovate, but where the Tablet S felt like a creative reworking of a well-honed formula, the Tablet P rips up the template with no real idea of how best to put the pieces back together. Yes, it’s uniquely portable, but the trade-off in user experience is simply too high, especially when Sony is charging $729 for it. That’s the same price as a 32GB iPad 2 with 3G. The Tablet P is inventive enough not to be written off, but it needs an awful lot of work before it can live up to that kind of comparison.

The Sony Tablet P has a novel design, but it doesn't offer the software to take advantage of it. Two screens should deliver multitasking, but they don't. "Playstation" should mean great games, not a handful of 1990s retreads. If you want a good gaming experience, stay away from the Tablet P and opt instead for the Sony Playstation Vita ($299, 4 stars). If you want a good tablet experience, stay away from the Tablet P and go with any number of capable small-screen tablets, like the Kindle Fire Amazon Kindle Fire or a more standard Android tablet like the Springboard 4G ($429, 3.5 stars). When it comes to dual-screen devices, the Tablet P is even a step back from the Kyocera Echo, which itself was no smash hit. Apparently, sometimes two screens really aren't better than one.

If Sony could do this again with more developer support, the latest and greatest specs and OS, and cut down on the bezel this could be a real winner. For now it seems tossed together and a halfway finished experience. If you want an excellent and portable tablet with data access get the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, for gaming get the PS Vita, and for a true tablet experience try the Transformer Prime or the iPad.

We give Sony credit for attempting to forge a new category of portable tablet, but the company's ambition didn't quite pay off. On the plus side, the Tablet P backs up its dual-screen design with some compelling apps that take advantage of both displays. You can fit the device in a breast pocket or small purse, something you can't do with the Kindle Fire or iPad 2. Then again, the Tablet P feels fairly bulky for a handheld device, and it can't make voice calls (other than VoIP).

The Sony Tablet P is priced at Rs.36,990 (MRP). This makes it compete with the top notch Android tablets and the iPad 2, as well. The P makes for an interesting design, but whilst doing so, it limits your functionality greatly. In the real world, you’re not going to be impressed with what it’s capable of doing. At best, it’s decent for gaming (if they get more apps that is) and as an e-reader. But, a tablet is much more than just that. If it would have been priced around 23-25K, then we’d have been a little more lenient with our score, but at 37K, it’s just too absurd a price. With the P, it’s back to the drawing board for Sony.

The Sony Tablet P offers a mixed experience. The screen is beautiful, the build robust, the inclusion of 3G very welcome and performance above par. But we can't ignore the poor integration of the Sony Entertainment Network elements that people may choose this tablet for. There are also many occasions when having a black strip obscuring the central part of the combined screen is a real hindrance.

The Tablet P is the perfect illustration of why Sony has risen so high but also fallen so low. Its clamshell, dual screen design is daring, well made and has some key killer applications. The screens themselves are also of wonderful quality and the whole device has a premium feel. Unfortunately reality sets in and for its core tasks the Tablet P is more hindrance than help.

NVIDIA GeForce ULP (Tegra 2): Integrierte Ultra Low Power (ULP) GPU im Tegra 2 SoC und je nach version von 300 bis 400 MHz getaktet.

3D Spiele sind auf diesen Vertretern nur in Ausnahmen spielbar, grundsätzlich sind die Grafiklösungen hierfür jedoch nicht geeignet. Office Programme und Internet surfen dürfte jedoch ohne Problem möglich sein.
