NVIDIA 2 (250)

Der NVIDIA Tegra 250 ist ein SOC (System on a Chip) der Serie Tegra 2 (T20/AP20H). Er besteht aus einem Dual-Core ARM Cortex-A9 Prozessor, einer GeForce ULP Grafikkarte, einen DDR2 Speichercontroller, Video En- und Decode Prozessoren, Audio Prozessor und einem ARM7 Kern für Managementfunktionen.

Als Rechenprozessor findet man zwei ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore ohne NEON Instruktionen (Single Instruction Multiple Data) welche mit bis zu 1 GHz getaktet sind. Die Rechenleistung von Cortex A9 Kernen ist pro MHz deutlich geringer als bei aktuellen x86 Prozessoren (Intel Atom und AMD C-Serie z.B.). Durch die sehr gute Anpassung des Betriebssystems an den Chip, ist jedoch die gefühlte Performance oft nicht deutlich schlechter.

Die GeForce ULP genannte eingebaute Grafikkarte im Tegra 2 Prozessor taktet im Tegra 250 mit 300 (AP20H) bzw 333 MHz und bietet 8 Kerne (4 Pixel-, 4 Vertexshader). Gerüchteweise basiert die Architektur auf die GeForce 7 Serie. Eigenen Speicher besitzt die Grafikkarte nicht, sondern nimmt sich einen Teil vom Hauptspeicher (shared Memory). Als Schnittstelle zum Programm unterstützt der ULP GeForce OpenGL ES 2.0. Die Grafikkarte unterstützt zwei simultane Ausgaben gleichzeitig. Über HDMI 1.3 wird bis zu 1920x1080 unterstützt, per LCD maximal 1680x1050.

Zum De- und Encodieren von Videos bietet der Tegra 250 zwei dedizierte Funktionseinheiten. Der Decoder unterstützt alle drei Flash Video Formate: H.264, Sorenson und VP6-E. Von H.264 wird jedoch nur das Main Profile unterstützt. Der Encoder unterstützt ebenfalls 1080p bei H.264. Vorteil der dedizierten Einheiten soll der geringe Stromverbrauch sein. Auch ein dedizierter Audio Prozessor soll den Hauptprozessor bei MP3 entlasten.

Der integrierte Single Channel 32 Bit DDR2 Speichercontroller unterstützt DDR2-667 oder LPDDR2-600 Speicherchips mit bis zu 1 GB Kapazität.

Gefertigt wird der Tegra 250 in 40nm bei TSMC und soll in etwa einen TDP von 0.5 - 1W aufweisen. Dadurch eignet er sich für kleine und leichte (Android) Tablets und auch Superphones (4").
