NVIDIA K1

Der NVIDIA Tegra K1 (Tegra 5) ist ein leistungsstarker ARM-SoC für Tablets und Smartphones. Er wurde am 6. Januar 2014 vorgestellt und integriert eine Quad-Core-CPU (zzgl. Companion Core) mit Cortex-A15-Kernen, eine auf der Kepler-Architektur basierende Grafikeinheit, einen 2x 32 Bit Dual-Channel Speichercontroller (DDR3L und LPDDR2/3 bis 2.133 MHz, 17 GB/s), Videode- und -encoder für 4K-Videos sowie zwei Kamera-ISPs. Anders als das Vorgängermodell Tegra 4, welches noch in 28nm HPL (low leakage) produziert wurde, wird Tegra K1 in TSMCs leistungsfähigerem 28nm-HPM-Prozess (high performance) gefertigt.

Später im Jahr 2014 soll noch eine weitere Version des SoCs folgen, die statt vier Cortex-A15-Kernen (max. 2,3 GHz) zwei Denver-Kerne (max. 2,5 GHz) integriert. Diese 7-fach superskalare Architektur ist ähnlich wie Apples "Cyclone" bereits 64-Bit-fähig (ARMv8) und wurde von Nvidia selbst entwickelt. Insbesondere die Pro-Kern-Leistung dürfte bei der neuen Denver-Version merklich höher ausfallen.

Prozessor

Der CPU-Part von Tegra K1 stellt eine evolutionäre Weiterentwicklung des Vorgängermodells Tegra 4 dar. Wie zuvor kommen insgesamt 5 Cortex-A15-Kerne zum Einsatz ("4-Plus-1"), von denen jedoch einer, der sogenannte Companion Core, nur zum Stromsparen dient. Durch den verbesserten Fertigungsprozess und die neue "r3"-Revision des Cortex-A15 konnte Nvidia die Taktrate deutlich anheben, die bei den vier Hauptkernen nun statt 1,8 - 1,9 GHz (Tegra 4) bis zu 2,3 GHz beträgt. Der fünfte Kern taktet weiterhin klar niedriger mit höchstens 1,0 GHz (typischerweise sogar nur 500 MHz).

Grafikeinheit

Die integrierte Grafikeinheit ist die größte Neuerung von Tegra K1. Erstmals setzt Nvidia anstelle dedizierter Vertex- und Pixelshader auf ein einheitliches Unified Shader Design. Dieses baut grundlegend auf der im Jahre 2012 vorgestellten Kepler-Architektur auf, die wiederum die Basis für verschiedene Grafikchips wie den GK208 bildet (zu finden bei der GeForce GT 730M, 740M und anderen). Mit einem SMX-Block und 192 CUDA-Cores bietet Tegra K1 genau halb so viele Shader wie GK208, allerdings nur ein Viertel der Textureinheiten (8 statt 32 TMUs). Weiterhin verfügt der SoC über 4 ROPs (GK208: 8 ROPs).

Dank der Umstellung auf die moderne Kepler-Architektur unterstützt Tegra K1 auch eine Vielzahl neuer Features: OpenGL ES 3.0 wird nun ebenso vollständig unterstützt wie OpenGL 4.4, DirectX 11 (damit auch Tesselation), OpenCL 1.1 (1.2 in Theorie) und CUDA 6.0. Nvidia demonstrierte die GPGPU-Fähigkeiten des SoCs unter anderem mit in Echtzeit applizierten Videoeffekten wie Tone Mapping.

Features

Tegra K1 verfügt über zwei ISPs mit jeweils 600 MP/s und kann damit zwei Kameras mit bis zu 100 Megapixeln und 14 Bit Farbtiefe ansteuern. Mittels Nvidias Chimera 2 können unter Nutzung der CPU- und GPU-Einheiten verschiedene Effekte wie HDR-Aufnahmen realisiert werden.

Die integrierte Video-Engine bewältigt das Encoding und Decoding von Videos in 2K- und 4K-Auflösung, letztere wahrscheinlich mit Unterstützung der CPU-Kerne. In 4K schafft die Engine 30 fps beim Dekodieren und 24 fps beim Encodieren. 1080p kann in 120fps dekodiert werden und 60fps encodiert.

CPU-Leistung

Die vier bis zu 2,3 GHz schnellen Cortex-A15r3-Kerne (kein zusätzlicher Turbo für Single-Thread-Belastung) werden als besonders leistungsstark und effizient beworben. Gegenüber Tegra 4 verspricht der Hersteller eine 40-prozentige Performancesteigerung bei gleichem Verbrauch. Laut Nvidia konnte der SPECInt2K-Score dadurch trotz Absenkung der Leistungsaufnahme von unter 1.200 auf knapp über 1.400 Punkte gesteigert werden.

In unseren Benchmarks liefert sich Tegra K1 mit dem Apple A8 ein enges Kopf-an-Kopf Rennen um die Leistungskrone unter den ARM-SoCs (Stand Ende 2014). Während die A8 die meisten Single-Thread-Benchmarks wie z. B. Browser-Tests für sich entscheidet, punktet der Nvidia-Chip in nahezu allen Multi-Thread-Disziplinen. Dabei gilt es allerdings zu betonen, dass der A8 seine Performance dank 20-Nanometer-Fertigung auch in einem kompakten Smartphone-Gehäuse abrufen kann. Tegra K1 ist durch seine höhere Leistungsaufnahme eher für Tablets geeignet.

Grafikleistung

Bei der integrierten GPU setzt Tegra K1 auf eine optimierte Variante der  Kepler-Architektur, die bereits seit einiger Zeit von Laptops bis hin zu Supercomputern eingesetzt wird. Nvidias Shield-Tablet im 8-Zoll-Format erreicht im GFXBench 2.7 (T-Rex Offscreen) rund 66 fps, was mehr als der vierfachen Framerate des Vorgängers Tegra 4 entspricht. Auch die PowerVR GX6450 im Apple A8 oder die Adreno 420 des Snapdragon 805 werden um mehr als 50 Prozent geschlagen. Damit liegt Nvidias ARM-SoC sogar über dem Niveau von Intels HD Graphics 4400 der Haswell-Generation.

Auch im neueren GFXBench 3.0 hält Tegra K1 die Konkurrenz mühelos in Schach; kein anderer ARM-SoC des Jahres 2014 kann mit einer vergleichbar hohen Grafikleistung aufwarten. Zusammen mit dem umfangreichen Featureset, welches sogar über den Standard von OpenGL ES 3.0 hinausgeht (und auch Tesselation, Geometry Shading oder ASTC Texturkompression beinhaltet), soll der SoC eine ernsthafte Spiele-Plattform darstellen. Übrigens: Auch Qualcomm verspricht für den Snapdragon 805 vollen DirectX-11-Support und damit einen ähnlichen Featureumfang. In puncto Rohleistung kann sich Tegra K1 laut Hersteller mit der letzten Konsolengeneration Xbox 360 und PS3 messen beziehungsweise übertrifft diese GPU-seitig sogar. Konsolenspiele gelten allerdings als extrem hoch optimiert, zudem ist die Etablierung von Android und iOS als Spiele-Plattformen noch lange nicht abgeschlossen.

Leistungsaufnahme

Anders als bei früheren Generation stellt Nvidia die Energieeffizienz von Tegra K1 besonders in den Vordergrund und betont, problemlos mit der (Tablet-)Konkurrenz mithalten zu können oder diese gar zu übertreffen. Im Gegensatz zu einem Apple A8 oder Snapdragon 805 ist Tegra K1 jedoch praktisch nicht in Smartphones zu finden. Durch das kleinere Gehäuse und die damit schlechtere Kühlung dürfte die Performance in diesem Formfaktor merklich schlechter ausfallen.

Vorstellung und Endgeräte

Direkt zum Launch hat Nvidia keine Beispiele für erfolgreiche Design-Wins genannt sondern lediglich angekündigt, dass eine Vielzahl mobiler Tegra-K1-Geräte erscheinen soll. Zu den ersten Vertretern zählt unter anderem Nvidias hauseigenes Shield Tablet sowie das MiPad von Xiaomi, darüber hinaus soll Tegra K1 auch in Infotainment-Systemen in der Automobilindustrie zum Einsatz kommen.
