HiSilicon Kirin 920

Der HiSilicon Kirin 920 ist ein ARM-basierter Octa-Core-SoC der oberen Mittelklasse für Smartphones und Tablets, der im zweiten Halbjahr 2014 zusammen mit dem Huawei Honor 6 vorgestellt wurde. Neben den 8 CPU-Kernen integriert der Chip auch eine Mali-T628 MP4 Grafikeinheit, einen Dual-Channel LPDDR3-Speichercontroller sowie ein LTE Cat. 6 Modem. Vom Schwestermodell Kirin 925 unterscheidet sich der Chip nur durch einen etwas geringeren CPU-Takt sowie die leicht schwächere Grafiklösung.

Prozessor

Der Kirin 920 verfügt über zwei unterschiedliche CPU-Cluster mit jeweils vier Kernen. Während der eine Cluster vier schnelle Cortex-A15-Kerne mit bis zu 1,7 GHz Taktrate integriert, setzt der andere auf vier sparsame Cortex-A7-Kerne mit maximal 1,3 GHz Takt. Je nach Belastung schaltet der SoC automatisch zwischen den effizienten A7- und leistungsstarken A15-Kernen um, was der Leistungsaufnahme und damit auch der Akkulaufzeit zugutekommt. Dieses von ARM entwickelte Konzept wird unter der Bezeichnung "big.LITTLE" vermarktet und kommt unter anderem auch im Samsung Exynos 5420 zum Einsatz. Entsprechend der nur minimal niedrigeren Taktraten erreicht der Kirin 920 beinahe das gleiche Leistungsniveau wie der Samsung-Chip und ist so mit einem Snapdragon 800 von Qualcomm vergleichbar.

Grafikeinheit

Die ebenfalls von ARM lizenzierte Grafikeinheit hört auf die Bezeichnung Mali-T628. Im Kirin 920 kommt dabei die MP4-Version mit insgesamt 4 Clustern zum Einsatz (77 GFLOPS bei 600 MHz). Die Mali-T628 beherrscht unter anderem OpenGL ES 3.0, OpenCL 1.1 sowie DirectX 11 und bietet eine Grafikleistung, die etwa im Bereich der Adreno 320 (Snapdragon 600) oder Adreno 405 (Snapdragon 610) liegt. Damit zählt die GPU zur Mittelklasse mobiler Grafiklösungen des Jahres 2014/2015 und kann die meisten aktuellen Android-Spiele in hohen Auflösungen (maximal möglich: 2.560 x 1.600 Pixel) flüssig darstellen.

Leistungsaufnahme

Trotz Fertigung in einem aktuellen 28-Nanometer-Prozess (TSMC HPM) dürfte die Leistungsaufnahme des Kirin 920 im oberen Bereich liegen, was auf die vergleichsweise hohen Taktraten zurückzuführen ist. Demzufolge kann der SoC in mittelgroßen Smartphones, aber auch Tablets eingesetzt werden.
