Intel Atom Z3580

Der Intel Atom Z3580 ist ein sparsamer Quad-Core-SoC für Tablets und Smartphones. Er taktet mit bis zu 2,33 GHz (Burst) und gehört der Moorefield Plattform an. Neben den vier CPU-Kernen integriert der Chip auch eine PowerVR G6430 Grafikeinheit sowie einen Dual-Channel LPDDR3-1600 Speichercontroller (max. 4 GB, 12,8 GB/s). Ein Mobilfunk-Modem ist dagegen nicht enthalten, kann jedoch extern ergänzt werden.

Architektur

Die Prozessorkerne basieren auf Intels Silvermont-Architektur, welche im Gegensatz zu früheren Atom-Prozessoren als Out-of-order-Design ausgeführt wurde. Die dadurch erhöhte Auslastung der Pipeline sowie viele weitere Detailverbesserungen – optimierte Sprungvorhersage, vergrößerte Buffer, verbesserte Decoder – steigern die Pro-MHz-Leistung um etwa 50 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorgänger (Codename Saltwell, z.B. Atom Z2560). Gleichzeitig entfällt allerdings das Hyper-Threading-Feature. Weitere wichtige Änderungen umfassen die Unterstützung neuer Befehlssatzerweiterungen wie SSE 4.1 und 4.2 sowie AES-NI (modellabhängig).

Performance

Für einen Smartphone- und Tablet-SoC bietet der Z3580 eine vergleichsweise hohe Pro-MHz-Leistung sowie eine sehr hohe Taktrate, die jedoch nur den maximal möglichen Burst (für eine kurze Zeitspanne) darstellt. Insgesamt liegt die CPU-Leistung im Bereich von Nvidias Tegra K1 oder einem Snapdragon 805 und damit im absoluten High-End-Segment mobiler SoCs des Jahres 2014.

Grafik

Die integrierte Grafikeinheit des SoCs stammt nicht von Intel selbst, sondern wurde von Imagination Technologies lizensiert. Die PowerVR G6430 kommt auch in Apples A7 zum Einsatz, taktet mit in diesem Fall 457 - 533 MHz allerdings deutlich höher als im iPhone 5S (vermutlich 400 MHz). Insgesamt ergibt sich so eine überzeugende 3D-Performance, die mit Konkurrenten wie der Adreno 330 im Snapdragon 800/801 problemlos mithalten oder diese sogar übertreffen kann. An die Adreno 420 oder Tegra-K1-GPU kommt Intel jedoch nicht ganz heran. Dennoch werden selbst anspruchsvollste Android-Spiele und sehr hohe Displayauflösungen problemlos bewältigt.

Intel verspricht des Weiteren Hardware-beschleunigtes VP8-Encoding/-Decoding (1080p60) sowie die Unterstützung für H.265 und VP9.

Leistungsaufnahme

Entsprechend seiner Leistungsfähigkeit dürfte der von Intel in 22 Nanometern gefertigte Z3580 eine mittlere bis hohe Leistungsaufnahme aufweisen. Laut Hersteller ist der Chip sowohl für den Einsatz in Tablets als auch Smartphones vorgesehen.
