Der Mediatek MT8173 ist ein im März 2015 vorgestellter ARM-SoC (System-on-a-Chip) der oberen Mittelklasse, der vorrangig in Android-basierten Tablets eingesetzt wird. Er wird in 28 Nanometern gefertigt und verfügt über insgesamt vier CPU-Kerne. Diese setzen sich aus zwei Cortex-A72- und zwei Cortex-A53-Kernen zusammen, die in einem big.LITLLE-Verbund zusammenarbeiten. Die Grafikeinheit entstammt der IMG Series 6XT (Rogue) und hört auf den Namen PowerVR GX6250. Weiterhin integriert ist unter anderem ein Videodecoder mit 4K- und H.265-Unterstützung.

Prozessor

Größte Besonderheit des SoCs sind die neuen Cortex-A72-Kerne, die als Nachfolger des Cortex-A57-Designs betrachtet werden können. ARM verspricht für diese eine deutlich gesteigerte Performance bei geringerem Energiebedarf, was in Verbindung mit der sehr hohen Maximaltaktrate von 2,4 GHz eine exzellente Pro-Thread-Performance ergibt. Die Architektur basiert auf der ARMv8-ISA und ist damit 64-Bit-fähig.

Die beiden langsameren, dafür aber sehr sparsamen Cortex-A53-Kerne (Taktrate unbekannt, mutmaßlich etwa 1,5 GHz) sollen vor allem die Leistungsaufnahme reduzieren und sind immer dann aktiv, wenn nur einfache Anwendungen ausgeführt werden. Die big.LITTLE-Architektur erlaubt auch den parallelen Betrieb aller vier Kerne (oder beliebige Kombinationen von Kernen beider Cluster), sodass der MT8173 als echter Quad-Core-SoC bezeichnet werden kann.

Grafikeinheit

Die Grafikeinheit entstammt der Series 6XT (Rogue) von IMG und hört auf den Namen PowerVR GX6250. Der 2-Cluster-Chip verfügt über eine Unified Shader Architektur mit insgesamt 64 FP32-ALUs sowie 4 TMUs. Dank der relativ hohen Maximaltaktrate von 700 MHz erreicht die Performance etwa das Niveau der PowerVR G6430 im iPhone 5S. Hochauflösende Displays und anspruchsvolle Android-Spiele des Jahres 2015 werden zumeist problemlos bewältigt.

Features

Neben CPU und Grafikchip integriert der Chip auch einen LPDDR3-Speichercontroller (2x 32 Bit, vermutlich max. 933 MHz, 14,9 GB/s), aber kein Mobilfunkmodem. Die maximale Displayauflösung liegt bei 2.560 x 1.600 Pixeln. Eine weitere Besonderheit ist die integrierte Videoengine, die sogar 4K-Material und den modernen H.265-Codec beherrscht.

Leistungsaufnahme

Der MT8173 wird in 28-Nanometer-Technik gefertigt und sollte durch seine hohe Taktrate eine mittlere bis hohe Leistungsaufnahme aufweisen. Ein Einsatz in Tablets ist jedoch ohne Einschränkungen möglich.
