HiSilicon Kirin 950

Der HiSilicon Kirin 950 ist ein ARM-basierter Octa-Core-SoC der High-End-Klasse für Smartphones und Tablets, der Ende 2015 zusammen mit dem Huawei Mate 8 vorgestellt wurde. Neben den 8 CPU-Kernen integriert der Chip auch eine Mali-T880 MP4 Grafikeinheit, einen Dual-Channel LPDDR4-2666-Speichercontroller sowie ein LTE Cat. 6 Modem. Ende 2015/Anfang 2016 zählt der Chip zu den schnellsten ARM-SoCs auf dem Markt.

Prozessor

Als erster Hersteller überhaupt hat Huawei/HiSilicon mit dem Kirin 950 einen SoC auf Basis der Cortex-A72-Architektur vorgestellt, dem Nachfolger des Cortex-A57-Designs (z.B. Samsung Exynos 7420, Snapdragon 810). Dank diverser Optimierungen erreicht der A72 eine etwa 15 Prozent höhere Pro-MHz-Leistung als der A57 und nimmt bei identischer Taktrate gleichzeitig weniger Energie auf. Insgesamt wurde die Energieeffizienz um etwa 30 Prozent verbessert. Im Falle des Kirin 950 takten die vier A72-Kerne mit bis zu 2,3 GHz, was eine Performance gut 20 Prozent oberhalb des Samsung Exynos 7420 ermöglicht.

Zusätzlich integriert der SoC vier langsamere, dafür aber sehr sparsame und ebenfalls 64-Bit-fähige Cortex-A53-Kerne mit einer maximalen Kernfrequenz von 1,8 GHz. Je nach Anwendung werden entweder die schnelleren A72- oder die sparsameren A53-Kerne aktiviert (bzw. eine Kombination aus beiden), um so Leistungsaufnahme und Performance zu optimieren.

Grafikeinheit

Die ebenfalls von ARM lizenzierte Grafikeinheit hört auf die Bezeichnung Mali-T880. Im Kirin 950 kommt dabei die MP4-Version mit insgesamt 4 Clustern zum Einsatz (900 MHz). Die Mali-T880 beherrscht unter anderem OpenGL ES 3.1, OpenCL 1.2 sowie DirectX 11.2 (FL 11_2) und bietet in dieser Konfiguration eine Grafikleistung, die etwa im Bereich der Adreno 420 (Snapdragon 805) liegt. Damit bleibt die GPU etwas hinter der Mali-T760 MP8 (Exynos 7420) und weit hinter der PowerVR GT7600 (Apple A9) zurück, besitzt für aktuelle Android-Spiele in FullHD-Auflösung aber dennoch ausreichende Leistungsreserven.

Leistungsaufnahme

Der Kirin 950 wird erstmals in einem modernen 16-Nanometer-Prozess von TSMC gefertigt (16FF+). Trotz der sehr hohen Performance liegt die Leistungsaufnahme etwas unterhalb der des Snapdragon 810 oder Exynos 7420.
