Apple A9 / PowerVR GT7600

Imagination A9 / PowerVR GT7600

Die PowerVR GT7600 von Imagination Technologies ist eine mobile Grafiklösung für Smartphones, die im ARM-SoC Apple A9 (iPhone 6s und 6s Plus) zu finden ist. Die seit dem dritten Quartal 2015 verfügbare GPU zählt Ende 2015 zu den schnellsten Grafikchips im Smartphone-Segment.

Architektur und Performance

Die aus der Series 7XT stammende GPU basiert auf einer skalaren Unified Shader Architektur und integriert insgesamt sechs Cluster mit 384 (FP16) beziehungsweise 192 (FP32) ALU Cores. Im Vergleich zu den Series 6XT Grafikkernen, gibt ImgTec an die Performance und auch Effizienz verbessert zu haben. Weiters gibt es Unterstütztung für Virtualisierung, Security Hardware, Geometry Shaders, Tessellation, Native 10-Bit YUV und ASTC LDR/HDR. DirectX 11 und OpenCL FP64 sind optional als Feature Pack für die GPU erhältlich, Apple wird dies jedoch wahrscheinlich nicht benötigen. (Quelle imtec.com)

Performance

Während der ersten Veröffentlichung im iPhone 6s (Plus) ist der PowerVR GT 7600 ganz klar die stärkste Grafikkarte für Smartphones. In unseren Tests eines iPhone 6s schlägt er in sämtlichen Tests sogar die stärksten Tablet GPUs wie PowerVR GXA6850 im A8x (iPad Air 2) und Tegra K1 (im Nvidia Shield Tablet). Der Tegra X1 ist je nach Test entweder vorne (3DMark 2013 Unlimited GPU 135%) oder ebenfalls hinten (GFXBench 3.0 Manhatttan 79%). Die Adreno 430 (Snapdragon 810) wird deutlich abgehängt (34 - 87% je nach Test) und auch die Mali-T760 MP8 (7420 Octa). Dank der eigenen Metal API in IOS und der üblicherweise sehr guten Anpassung von IOS Apps an die Hardware, sollte neue 3D Spiele mit hohen Details auf dem iPhone spielbar sein.

Leistungsaufnahme

Dank der fortschrittlichen 14/16-Nanometer-Fertigung (3D Transistoren) auf die Apple bei der Präsentation hinwies dürfte die GT7600-Implementation des Apple A9 eine recht hohe Energieeffizienz aufweisen. Im Gegenzug benötigt die GPU jedoch auch relativ viele Transistoren und damit eine große Chipfläche.
