Ich halte das Apple iPad der fünften Generation für ein ziemlich gutes Tablet. Ja, es ist dicker als das iPad Air 2 und hat kein so gutes Display, aber die Performance ist merkbar schneller. Gleichzeitig ist die Verarbeitung wie bei Apple üblich sehr hochwertig und das neue iOS 11 ist meiner Meinung nach sehr gut umgesetzt.

Apples iPads bieten normalerweise gute Qualität zu recht hohen Preisen, doch das neueste Tablet der Firma dreht den Spieß um. Das aktuellste Apple iPad 2017 hat einen schnellen Prozessor, einen Bildschirm mit lebhaften Farben, und erstaunliche Akkulaufzeiten für einen etwas kleineren Preis. Dieses iPad ersetzt faktisch das premium iPad Air 2 aus dem Jahr 2014 als das beste große, Nicht-Pro-Tablet im Angebot der Firma. Dennoch wollte Apple diese regulären Modelle von den hochwertigeren unterscheidbar machen, weshalb auf der linken Seite des iPads kein Smart Connector ist, und auch das Display nicht laminiert ist. Mit einem Gewicht von 468 g und einer Dicke von 7,36 mm ist dieses iPad um Haaresbreite dicker und schwerer als manche Rivalen. Es ist sogar etwas dicker als das Air 2, das 6,1 mm misst. Solche Einzelheiten deuten auf Kosteneinsparungen, doch die Unterschiede sind gering. Das zweifarbige Aluminium-Unibody-Gehäuse des iPads sieht immer noch elegant aus, obwohl es niemanden, dem das Apple-Design der letzten Jahre bekannt ist, begeistern wird. Zur Auswahl stehen die gewohnten Farboptionen: silber, gold oder space grau.

Die Home-Taste des iPads ist klickbar, beherbergt aber auch Touch ID. Stereo-Lautsprecher befinden sich auf dem unteren Rand des Tablets, die Einschalttaste und Lautstärketasten in der oberen rechten Ecke. Wie bei allen Nicht-Pro-iPads sind die einzigen Anschlüsse auf dem Gerät ein Lightning-Anschluss sowie ein Kopfhörereingang. In Sachen Akkuleistung hält das iPad 10 Stunden Internetsurfen oder Videowiedergabe über Wi-Fi durch. Die vorinstallierte Betriebsversion ist iOS 10.3. Das Panel des iPads löst 2048 x 1536 Pixel auf und bietet helle, lebendige Farben und feine Details. Mit 470 nits (eine Maßeinheit der Helligkeit) ist der Bildschirm auch unglaublich hell. Somit überstrahlt es das 9,7-Zoll iPad Pro (432 nits) und den Kategoriedurchschnitt von 374 nits. Neben hoher Helligkeit hat das iPad auch exzellente Blickwinkel: Selbst bei einem Winkel von 75 Grad zur linken oder rechten Seite verdunkeln die Farben nicht. Allerdings weist der Bildschirm Finderabdrücke nicht ab und ist auch nicht mit einer Antireflex-Beschichtung bedeckt. Im Inneren sorgt der A9 Prozessor für ausgezeichnete Multitasking-Leistung. Im Internet surfen oder Apps nutzen kann man dank 2 GB Arbeitsspeicher auch ohne Probleme. Das iPad profitiert von den Multitasking-Ansichten, die Apple mit iOS 9 eingeführt hat. Seitdem kann man eine zweite App von der rechten Seite des Displays hereinziehen, den Bildschirm für zwei Apps aufteilen oder ein Video im Bild-im-Bild-Modus anschauen. Die Kameras des iPads nehmen detailreiche Fotos und Videos auf. Auf der Hinterseite ist ein 8-MP-Kamera, vorne eine Facetime-HD-Kamera mit 1,2 MP. Beide Kameras nehmen Live Photos auf, Apples GIF-artige Schnappschüsse, die man mit einem Fingertipp zum Leben erwecken kann. Die Hauptkamera kann auch scharfe, präzise 1080p-Videos aufnehmen. In einer idealen Welt wäre das iPad (2017) ein vollständiges Upgrade der Vorgängergenerationen, so wie man das von dem iPhone 8 erwartet. Das ist es aber nicht. Während die ganze technologische Welt mit einer noch nie dagewesenen Geschwindigkeit vorangeschritten ist, ist Apples iPad seit seiner Einführung mehr oder weniger gleich geblieben. Dies ist auch mit dem abnehmenden Interesse an Tablets verbunden.
