Imagination PowerVR G6400

Die PowerVR G6400 von Imagination Technologies ist eine schnelle mobile Grafiklösung, die für Tablet- und Smartphone-SoCs (vorrangig Android) wie Intels Merrifield Serie (z.B. Atom Z3460) konzipiert wurde. Entsprechende Chips sind seit Mitte 2014 verfügbar und bieten eine Grafikleistung, die zum Zeitpunkt der Vorstellung dem (unteren) High-End-Segment zuzuordnen ist.

Architektur und Performance

Die aus der Series 6 (Rogue) stammende GPU integriert vier Cluster mit jeweils zwei TMUs und einer skalaren Unified Shader Architektur. Bei gleicher Taktrate bietet der Chip mehr als doppelt so viel Rechenleistung wie die ältere SGX543MP3 (z.B. Apple A6). Im Vergleich mit der PowerVR G6430 in Apples A7-SoC muss die G6400 Gerüchten zufolge auf eine Framebuffer-Kompression verzichten. Gegenüber anderen mobilen Grafiklösungen platziert sich die G6400 auf einem Niveau mit der Adreno 330 von Qualcomm und ist damit zum Zeitpunkt der Veröffentlichung eine der schnellsten GPUs ihrer Klasse. Auch sehr anspruchsvolle Mobile-Games werden ohne Probleme flüssig dargestellt (Stand 2014). Einzig Nvidias Tegra K1 bietet eine nochmals deutlich höhere Grafikleistung. Die GPU unterstützt unter anderem OpenGL 3.x/4.x, OpenGL ES 3.1 sowie DirectX 10.

Je nach konkretem SoC kann die Taktrate und damit die Performance der G6400 leicht variieren. So taktet die GPU im Atom Z3460 (400 - 457 MHz) etwas langsamer als im Atom Z3480 (457 - 533 MHz).

Leistungsaufnahme

Der Hersteller hat die PowerVR G6400 relativ "breit" ausgelegt, sodass neben der Performance auch die Energieeffizienz besonders hoch ausfallen soll. Dies sorgt dafür, dass SoCs mit der G6400 auch in kleineren Smartphones und Tablets eingesetzt werden können. Im Gegenzug belegt die GPU aber eine relativ große Chipfläche.
