Qualcomm 650 MSM8956

Der Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 (MSM8956, ehemals Snapdragon 618) ist ein ARM-basierter Mittelklasse-SoC für Tablets und Smartphones. Der im Februar 2015 vorgestellte Chip integriert insgesamt sechs CPU-Kerne, davon zwei schnelle Cortex-A72-Kerne (1,8 GHz) sowie vier sparsame Cortex-A53-Kerne (1,2 GHz). Weiterhin verfügt der Snapdragon 650 über eine Adreno-510-Grafikeinheit, einen 2x 32 Bit LPDDR3-1866-Speichercontroller (14,9 GB/s) sowie ein Funkmodem für WLAN, Bluetooth sowie UMTS/LTE.

Prozessor

Größte Besonderheit des SoCs sind die beiden Cortex-A72-Kerne, die als Nachfolger des Cortex-A57-Designs betrachtet werden können. ARM verspricht für diese eine deutlich gesteigerte Performance bei geringerem Energiebedarf, was in Verbindung mit der Maximaltaktrate von 1,8 GHz eine hohe Pro-Thread-Performance ergeben dürfte. Die Architektur basiert auf der ARMv8-ISA und ist damit 64-Bit-fähig.

Die vier langsameren, dafür aber sehr sparsamen Cortex-A53-Kerne (max. 1,2 GHz) sollen vor allem die Leistungsaufnahme reduzieren und sind immer dann aktiv, wenn nur einfache Anwendungen ausgeführt werden. Die big.LITTLE-Architektur erlaubt auch den parallelen Betrieb aller sechs Kerne (oder beliebige Kombinationen von Kernen beider Cluster), sodass der Snapdragon 650 als echter Hexa-Core-SoC bezeichnet werden kann.

Insgesamt könnte die Performance etwa im Bereich des Krait-basierten Snapdragon 805 liegen, bei Auslastung einzelner Kerne wird sogar der Snapdragon 810 erreicht.

Grafiklösung

Zum Einsatz kommt die neue Adreno 510 Grafikkarte von Qualcomm (siehe Link für Benchmarks und Specs). Sie basiert auf die selbe Adreno 500 Architektur wie die Adreno 530 im Snapdragon 820, jedoch mit deutlich weniger Leistung.

Features

Der Snapdragon 650 unterstützt eine Reihe verschiedener Funkstandards. Dazu gehören nicht nur WLAN 802.11ac und Bluetooth 4.1, sondern auch verschiedene Ortungsdienste wie GPS (Qualcomm IZat Gen8C). Weiterhin beherrscht der Chip 2G- und 3G-Funk ebenso wie den aktuellen LTE-Standard (Cat. 7 bis 300Mbit/s, Single-/Dual-SIM).

Zu den Multimedia-Fähigkeiten des SoCs zählt die Aufnahme und Wiedergabe von 4K- und H.265-Videos (4K @ 30 fps, 1080p @ 120 fps) sowie der Support von Displays mit bis zu 2.560 x 1.600 Pixeln.

Leistungsaufnahme

Der Snapdragon 650 wird vermutlich von TSMC in einem 28-Nanometer-HPm-Prozess gefertigt. Damit dürfte sich die Leistungsaufnahme im mittleren bis oberen Bereich bewegen.
