Apple A8

Der Apple A8 ist ein High-End ARM-SoC, der im September 2014 zusammen mit dem iPhone 6 und iPhone 6 Plus vorgestellt wurde. Die CPU-Architektur wurde im Vergleich zum Vorgänger A7 leicht überarbeitet, zudem fällt die Taktrate der beiden 64-Bit-fähigen Rechenkerne mit bis zu 1,4 GHz marginal höher aus. Darüber hinaus integriert der Chip eine PowerVR Series 6 (Rogue) GX6450 Grafikeinheit sowie einen 2x 32 Bit Speichercontroller für LPDDR3-1333 RAM.

Architektur

Apple konnte die bereits extrem hohe Pro-MHz-Leistung der Cyclone-Architektur (Apple A7) nochmals um etwa 10 bis 15 Prozent steigern, was "Cyclone 2" zur mit Abstand IPC-stärksten ARM-Architektur auf dem Markt macht. Über die genauen Design-Änderungen kann bislang nur spekuliert werden; denkbar wären unter anderem vergrößerte Caches und Register sowie eine optimierte Sprungvorhersage. Als ARMv8-Chip kann der A8 genau wie der A7 64-Bit-Daten und -Adressen verarbeiten. 

Performance

Dank der abermals gesteigerten Pro-MHz-Leistung genügen dem Apple A8 zwei Kerne und nur 1,4 GHz Taktrate, um mit anderen High-End-SoCs wie dem Snapdragon 805 oder Tegra K1 mitzuhalten. In den meisten Single-Thread-Anwendungen wie Browser-Benchmarks setzt sich der SoC sogar an die absolute Leistungsspitze, wohingegen die (im Alltag allerdings oftmals weniger wichtige) Multi-Thread-Performance knapp hinter der Konkurrenz zurückbleibt.

Grafiklösung

Die GPU stammt aus der Series 6XT (Rogue) von PowerVR und hört auf den Namen GX6450. Genau wie die PowerVR G6430 integriert auch die GX6450 vier Shader-Cluster, allerdings verfügt nun jeder Cluster über eine größere Anzahl FP16-ALUs (insgesamt damit zwei FP32- und vier FP16-ALUs pro Cluster). Vermutlich taktet Apple die Grafikeinheit recht konservativ auf nur etwa 450 MHz (rund 115 GFLOPS FP32), um die Leistungsaufnahme in einem für Smartphones verträglichen Rahmen zu halten. Unsere Benchmarks sehen die 3D-Leistung klar oberhalb der Adreno 330 im Qualcomm Snapdragon 801, jedoch deutlich hinter der (mutmaßlich energiehungrigeren) Tegra K1 GPU von Nvidia. Damit zählt die GX6450 zu den schnellsten Smartphone-Grafiklösungen des Jahres 2014 und kann auch anspruchsvollste Spiele in hohen Auflösungen flüssig bewältigen.

Leistungsaufnahme

Anders als bisherige Apple-SoCs wird der A8 nicht mehr von Samsung, sondern vom weltgrößten Auftragsfertiger TSMC produziert. Zum Einsatz kommt erstmals ein 20-Nanometer-Prozess, der im Vergleich zum vorherigen 28-Nanometer-Prozess eine weitaus höhere Packdichte – rund zwei Milliarden Transistoren auf 89 mm² Fläche – erlaubt. Die Leistungsaufnahme des Chips dürfte auf dem Niveau anderer High-End-SoCs, z. B. von Qualcomm, liegen.
