Qualcomm 801 MSM8974AA

Der Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 MSM8974AA ist ein ARM-basierter SoC für Tablets und Smartphones (hauptsächlich Android). Er wird im Unterschied zum Snapdragon 600 im 28nm HPM (High Performance Mobile) HK-MG Verfahren bei TSMC gefertigt. Neben 4 CPU-Kernen mit einer Taktrate von maximal 2,26 GHz integriert der Chip auch eine Adreno-330-GPU (max. 450 MHz), einen LPDDR3-1600-Speichercontroller sowie verschiedene Funkmodule (UMTS/LTE, WLAN, Bluetooth, GPS).

Verglichen mit anderen Modellen der Snapdragon-801-Serie, beispielsweise dem MSM8974AB, bietet der MSM8974AA die niedrigsten CPU-, GPU- und Speicher-Taktraten.

Prozessor

Der CPU-Part basiert auf Qualcomms Krait-Architektur, einer zur ARMv7-ISA kompatiblen Eigenentwicklung. Im Snapdragon 800/801 kommen dabei vier der aktuellen Krait-400-Kerne zum Einsatz, die sich vom Vorgänger Krait 300 (zu finden im Snapdragon 600) nur durch kleinere Details wie einen schnelleren L2-Cache unterscheiden. Dank der guten Pro-MHz-Leistung, die in etwa zwischen einem ARM Cortex-A9 und Cortex-A15 einzuordnen ist, sowie der hohen Taktrate erreicht der Snapdragon 801 eine ausgesprochen starke CPU-Performance. Ende 2014 zählt der Chip zu den schnellsten ARM-SoCs auf dem Markt und wird nur von wenigen Modellen wie dem Apple A8X, Tegra K1 oder Snapdragon 805 knapp geschlagen.

Grafiklösung

Ein weiterer Unterschied zwischen dem Snapdragon 600 und Snapdragon 801 ist die Grafikeinheit. Während der S600 noch eine Adreno 320 (400 bis 450 MHz) integrierte, verfügt der neuere S801 MSM8974AA über die 450 MHz schnelle Adreno 330. Diese bietet die gleiche Anzahl an Textureinheiten (8 TMUs), aber 50 Prozent mehr Shader (vermutlich 4x SIMD16 vs. 6x SIMD16). In Verbindung mit der deutlich höheren Speicherbandbreite konnte die Performance so deutlich gesteigert werden. Im Ergebnis zählt die Adreno 330, die übrigens weiterhin OpenGL ES 3.0 und OpenCL 1.2 unterstützt, zur High-End-Klasse und liegt auf Augenhöhe mit der Mali-T628 (Exynos 5420) und PowerVR G6430 (Apple A7).

Weiterhin sind im Snapdragon MSM8974AA zahlreiche Funktechnologien integriert: Bluetooth 4.0, WLAN nach IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac (2.4/5 GHz), GSM (GPRS, EDGE), W-CDMA/UMTS (HSDPA, HSUPA, HSPA+, DC-HSPA+ cat.29), MBMS, LTE cat.4, CDMA2000 (1×RTT, 1×EV-DO Rel.0/Rev.A/Rev.B, 1×EV-DO MC Rev.A, 1×Adv Rev.A/Rev.B) sowie TD-SCDMA.

Der MSM8974AA kann UHD 4K Videos mittels dedizierter Hardware mit 3840x2160 bei 30 FPS encodieren (120 Mbps H.264 High Profile) und gleichzeitig auch wiedergeben. Überdies werden USB 2.0 und 3.0, Kameras bis 55 Megapixel und stereoskopisches 3D unterstützt.

Leistungsaufnahme

Durch den Einsatz eines 28 Nanometer HPM-Prozess (HKMG) konnte die Energieeffizienz gegenüber dem Vorgänger (S600: 28 Nanometer LP) deutlich verbessert werden. Je nach Einsatzgebiet dürfte die maximale Leistungsaufnahme des Chips bei etwa 3 - 4 Watt (Smartphones/Tablets) liegen, was vergleichbar mit anderen ARM-SoCs der Konkurrenz ist. Im Vergleich mit dem MSM8974AB sollte der 8974AA durch seine niedrigeren Taktraten etwas sparsamer arbeiten.
