Mediatek MT8176

 MT8176

Der Mediatek MT8176 ist ein im Oktober 2016 vorgestellter ARM-SoC (System-on-a-Chip) der oberen Mittelklasse, der vorranging in Android-basierenden Tablets eingesetzt wird. Er beinhaltet zwei schnelle ARM Cortex-A72 Prozessorkerne mit maximal 2,1 GHz und vier Cortex-A53 Cores zum Stromsparen. Beide Cluster arbeiten im big.LITTLE-Verbund zusammen. Die integrierte Grafikkarte entstammt der IMG Series 6XT (Rogue) und hört auf den Namen PowerVR GX6250 und taktet mit 600 MHz. Weiterhin integriert ist unter anderem ein Videodecoder mit 4K- und H.265-Unterstützung (nicht verifiziert, jedoch bereits beim älteren MT8173 der Fall).

Prozessor

Größte Besonderheit des SoCs sind die schnellen Cortex-A72-Kerne, die als Nachfolger des Cortex-A57-Designs betrachtet werden können. ARM verspricht für diese eine deutlich gesteigerte Performance bei geringerem Energiebedarf, was in Verbindung mit der hohen Maximaltaktrate von 2,1 GHz eine sehr gute Pro-Thread-Performance ergibt. Die Architektur basiert auf der ARMv8-ISA und ist damit 64-Bit-fähig.

Die vier langsameren, dafür aber sehr sparsamen Cortex-A53-Kerne (Taktrate unbekannt, mutmaßlich etwa 1,4 GHz) sollen vor allem die Leistungsaufnahme reduzieren und sind immer dann aktiv, wenn nur einfache Anwendungen ausgeführt werden. Die big.LITTLE-Architektur erlaubt auch den parallelen Betrieb aller sechs Kerne (oder beliebige Kombinationen von Kernen beider Cluster), sodass der MT8176 als echter Hexa-Core-SoC bezeichnet werden kann.

Grafikeinheit

Die Grafikeinheit entstammt der Series 6XT (Rogue) von IMG und hört auf den Namen PowerVR GX6250. Der 2-Cluster-Chip verfügt über eine Unified Shader Architektur mit insgesamt 64 FP32-ALUs sowie 4 TMUs. Im Vergleich zum MT8173 wurde die Taktrate von 700 MHz auf 600 MHz abgesenkt, wodurch die Spieleleistung etwas geringer ist. Hochauflösende Displays und relativ anspruchsvolle Android-Spiele sollten zumeist problemlos bewältigt werden.
