Der Mediatek MT8165 ist ein ARM-SoC (System-on-a-Chip) der Mittelklasse, der primär in Tablets (hauptsächlich Android) zu finden ist. Er wird in 28 Nanometern gefertigt und verfügt über vier CPU-Kerne auf Basis der 64-Bit-fähigen Cortex-A53-Architektur, die mit typischerweise 1,5 GHz takten. Als Grafikeinheit kommt eine ARM Mali-T760 MP2 mit zwei Clustern und 500 MHz Taktrate zum Einsatz.

Prozessor

Der Cortex-A53 kann als Nachfolger des beliebten Cortex-A7-Designs betrachtet werden. Neben der von 32 auf 64 Bit verbreiterten Prozessorarchitektur (ARMv8-ISA), die unter anderem die Adressierung von mehr als 4 GB Arbeitsspeicher erlaubt, wurden auch weitere Details wie die Sprungvorhersage optimiert. Insgesamt steigt die Pro-MHz-Leistung dadurch deutlich an und liegt sogar etwas oberhalb eines Cortex-A9-Kernes. Die vier Kerne des MT8732 takten mit bis zu 1,5 GHz, sodass sich der SoC in etwa zwischen dem Qualcomm Snapdragon 610 (4x Cortex-A53, 1,7 GHz) und Snapdragon 410 (4x Cortex-A53, 1,2 - 1,4 GHz) einordnet. Übliche Alltagsanwendungen wie Browsing bewältigt der Chip mit zufriedenstellender Geschwindigkeit.

Grafikeinheit

Die ARM Mali-T760 MP2 GPU verfügt über 2 Cluster, die mit bis zu 500 MHz (34 GFLOPS) takten. Damit erreicht die Mali-T760 MP2 weniger als ein Drittel der theoretischen Rechenleistung der T760 MP6, die von Samsung im Exynos 5433 verbaut wird. Die resultierende Performance liegt deutlich unterhalb einer Adreno 320 oder PowerVR G6200 und in etwa auf dem Level der Adreno 405, womit sich die GPU in der (unteren) Mittelklasse mobiler Grafiklösungen des Jahres 2015 ansiedelt. Übliche Android-Spiele werden auf Displays mittlerer bis höherer Auflösung zumeist flüssig wiedergegeben.

Neben CPU und Grafikeinheit integriert der Chip auch einen Speichercontroller für LPDDR3-RAM.

Leistungsaufnahme

Der MT8165 wird in 28-Nanometer-Technik gefertigt und sollte unter Last eine niedrige bis mittlere Leistungsaufnahme aufweisen. Damit ist der Chip auch für kleinere Tablets geeignet.
