Mit dem Asus Eee PC 901 verbessert Asus sein 8.9" Netbook 900. Eine schnellere Chipsatzgrafik, die sparsame Intel Atom CPU, WLAN nach dem Draft-n Standard, Bluetooth 2.0 und ein verfeinertes Design sind die wichtigsten Neuerungen. Besonders der sparsame Intel Atom N270 in Verbindung mit dem 6-Zellen Akku führen zu einer sehr guten Akkulaufzeit und geringen Betriebsgeräuschen. Leider bleiben die zwei größten Mankos des Eee PC 900 bestehen. Das dunkle Display verhindert leider immer noch wirkungsvoll den Einsatz im Freien. Außerdem ist die kleine Tastatur kaum im 10-Finger System blind zu benutzen. Gerade für ein mobiles E-Mail-, Surf- und Textverarbeitungssystem wären diese zwei Merkmale wichtig. Die Rechenleistung der neuen Intel Atom CPU reicht für die anspruchslosen täglichen Aufgaben völlig aus. Man kommt nur bei Spielen und hochauflösenden Videos an die Leistungsgrenzen des Systems. Die zwei kleinen SSDs sind nicht sonderlich schnell und besonders die Schreibrate lässt zu wünschen übrig, jedoch operieren sie lautlos und sind unempfindlich gegen Stöße. Insgesamt ist der Asus Eee PC ein interessantes Gesamtpaket mit langer Akkulaufzeit zum günstigen Preis. Anwender, die jedoch viel tippen und ein helles Display wünschen, sollten eher zu den 10" Kollegen (z.B. Asus Eee PC 1000H oder MSI Wind U100) greifen.

Der Eindruck eines praktischen und handlichen Zweitgerätes für unterwegs wird durch die Optimierung von Speicherkapazität, Darstellung und Performance verstärkt - die 80 Euro mehr sind deshalb gut angelegt.

Das Eee PC 901 ist das erste Netbook mit sehr langer Laufzeit. Die genügsame Atom-Plattform bietet sich geradezu dafür an, doch bislang gab es kein Gerät mit genügend großem Akku. Zusammen mit dem Medion Akoy Mini und dem Vorgänger Asus Eee PC 900 bildet dieses Modell für 379 Euro zumindest preislich die Oberklasse der billigen Netbooks. Trotz großem Akku fällt der Verkaufspreis also nicht aus dem Netbook-Rahmen heraus.

Der Eee-PC 901 ist auf jeden Fall für alle Nutzer geeignet, die unterwegs auf Internetinhalte, Voice over IP oder Office-Anwendungen nicht verzichten können. Auch als Zweitrechner zu Hause macht er eine gute Figur. Der Intel Atom Prozessor hat auf jeden Fall genügend Power, um diese Arbeiten souverän zu meistern. Auch der verbaute SSD-Speicher zeichnet sich durch sehr geringe Zugriffszeiten aus. Außerdem ist das Gerät so robust und kompakt, dass es problemlos überall mit hingenommen werden kann. Ein echter Schwachpunkt ist das Keyboard, geübte Zehnfingerschreiber werden sich umgewöhnen müssen.

Der Asus Eee PC wird immer besser: Der sparsame Intel Atom-Prozessor und der große 6-Zellen-Akku sind ein gutes Gespann. Damit wird der Eee PC 901 zum idealen Netbook für unterwegs: nicht zu schwer und mit langer Laufzeit. Und trotz größerer Festplatte, etwas mehr Rechenleistung und einem aufgehübschten Gehäuse ist der Eee PC 901 mit 379 Euro günstiger als sein Vorgänger – die vorhandene Konkurrenz durch Acer und Aldi und die künftige mit Dell und HP belebt eben auch bei den Mini-Laptops das Geschäft und lässt die Preise purzeln. Perfekt ist der Asus-Mini aber nicht: Das Display ist für draußen nicht hell genug und auch in Innenräumen wünscht man sich mehr Leuchtkraft. Die Tastatur ist gewöhnungsbedürftig – schnelles Tippen ist schwer bis unmöglich: Für ein Mobilgerät, das viele Anwender gerade zur Textarbeit oder als Chat-Maschine nutzen wollen, ist das nicht ideal.

All-in-all we like the improvements Asus has made to the Eee. It shows they are listening to their customers and making a valiant attempt to stay ahead of the curve in what is rapidly becoming a very competitive market. In fact, we’ll go ahead and say this is what the Eee should have been in the first place, as this version is much more useable and has better features than the original. Even better, Asus hasn’t raised the price despite all of the improvements it’s made, as the 901 still costs just $549, which is a decent value. We wished the keyboard was a bit larger, but for basic web use and email the Eee 901 is hard to beat when it comes to portability and bang for the buck.

Er ist zwar etwas größer, 100 Gramm schwerer und hat immer noch eine winzige Tastatur - aber mit seinen Neuerungen setzt sich der Eee PC 901 an die Spitze der kleinen Billig-Notebooks.

Last year our editorial staff was absolutely amazed by the original Eee PC. The original Eee PC finally delivered something that many consumers have wanted since laptops first arrived on the market: an extremely portable laptop with reasonable performance for travel at an extremely low cost. The new Eee PC 901 is an impressive update to the Eee PC line, but we have trouble getting excited about this mini notebook The problem is that the budget mini notebook market has exploded in recent months, with many capable alternatives on the market. Worse still is the fact that ASUS itself has already trumped the 901 with the new Eee PC 1000 series notebooks. The Eee PC 901 is still an impressive mini notebook or "netbook" for your travel needs, but we hesitate to recommend this particular notebook over the newer Eee PC 1000H which features a larger keyboard, larger screen, and a larger capacity traditional hard drive.

ASUS Eee PC 901

On the whole, I must say that I’m quite impressed with the Eee PC 901. The original felt more like a secondary computer to me with limited appeal, however, the 901 can be used as a primary laptop. The Atom provides reasonable performance and the exceptional Battery Life on the unit lets you work on it for many hours. The bumped up screen resolution and size also allow for a much better movie-watching and web surfing experience. About the only thing I don’t like is the Keyboard which is still cramped up for me but that really is something personal and may not be the same for everybody else. The pricing for 901 is not available at the time, but I would guess it would retail around AED 2,200 as the 900 is selling for 1999/- At that point, it becomes a bit expensive considering the original Eee PC sole foe AED 1,399. However, unlike the original Eee PC, the 901 can very much be used as your everyday laptop.

This is the third notebook we’ve seen from Asus’ Eee range, but in many respects it’s version two of the Eee. The 900, released only a few months ago, simply added a larger screen and Windows XP to the original design, but the 901 has a new case, better networking and, crucially, a new processor inside. The best Eee so far, but the Acer Aspire One is better value.

This 9-inch version, the Eee PC 901, comes mere months after the substantially similar Eee PC 900, adding a few items to features list, another $50 to the price, and, most notably, Intel's new Netbook-focused Atom CPU. The long-awaited Asus Eee PC 901 is the best version of this inexpensive Netbook yet, but it's facing increased competition from the likes of HP, Dell, and MSI.

If the ASUS Eee 900 basically amounted to a larger-screened version of the 7-inch original, then the Eee 901 marks its graduation into a distinct model. Packing Intel’s latest 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, in place of the 900’s Celeron 900MHz, ASUS could reasonably have left the rest of the notebook the same and simply added a little to the price. Thankfully they’ve subjected the 901 to a mild degree of fettling, tweaking case and controls and making for a markedly more attractive proposition.

The 901 then is a definite improvement over the stop-gap Eee900, but due to the now bloated marketplace it's hard to get quite as excited as with the original seven-inch version. Still, it's a fine machine and comes out cheaper, and with a longer life, than the current shipment of Winds. It's also probably at the sweet-spot of the ultra-portable form factor, any larger and you're straying dangerously close to standard laptop territory. The 10-inch Eee 1000 ought to be careful.

It's hard to get truly excited about the Asus Eee PC 901 as it's not so much a re-invention of the 900 but what should have been released in the first place. Thus, Asus is launching the Eee PC 901 - less of a whole new model, more an Atomic Eee PC 900 with added curves. To recap, the 900 brought the original Eee up to the specification most people were clamouring for: an 8.9in, 1,024 x 600 screen, a more sensible 1GB of RAM and up to 20GB of solid-state storage. A fine improvement over the Eee PC 900, with longer battery life and sleeker looks - but its rivals are sneaking up on the Eee with every release.

There's no doubt, the Eee PC 901 is the machine the 900 should have been but wasn't. It's got more features, a better processor and graphics, much longer battery life and yet costs less. Even if the 900 was slightly cheaper, we'd still go for the 901. Anyone who decided to ignore the 900 and wait for the 901 instead, will find they did the right thing.

Brimming with features and with a new CPU and better battery, the Eee PC 901 personifies exactly the spirit in which the original was created. It may be a bit more expensive than the original and lack a more comfortable keyboard, but for a balance of features, size, usability and value, the 901 has once again set the standard. For the moment, at least, the (new) original is still the best.

But when you consider that the MSI Wind NB, which features a larger keyboard and a bigger 10-inch screen, costs $100 less, this mini-notebook becomes less attractive. With the promise of the 10-inch Eee PC 1000 and Eee PC 1000H just around the corner, some may want to play the waiting game.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Integrierter (onboard) Grafikchip auf Mobile Intel 945GM Chipsatz und NAchfolger des GMA 900. Kein Hardware T&L (für manche Spiele benötigt). Für Spiele kaum geeignet.

Diese Karten können nur ältere Spiel noch flüssig darstellen. Aktuelle höchstens mit erheblich reduzierten Details und geringer Auflösung. Die integrierten Grafikkarten haben den Vorteil von einem geringem Stromverbrauch (höhere Akkulaufzeit, weniger Abwärme) und sind für Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung, Videoschnitt ohne Einschränkungen geeignet.

8.9": Es handelt sich um ein sehr kleines und seltenes Displayformat für Subnotebooks. Es gibt fast keine kleineren Displays und auch dieses Format ist sehr selten.

Der Vorteil von Subnotebooks liegt darin, dass das ganze Notebook klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das winzige Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten sehr anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen sind fast nicht nutzbar.

1.125 kg: Dieses Subnotebook, sofern man es als solches überhaupt bezeichnen kann, gehört zu den leichtesten Notebooks überhaupt und kann klarerweise hervorragend getragen werden. Es gibt kaum Sub-Notebooks in dieser extremen Gewichtsklasse. 7-9 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.

Asus: Asus ist ein internationaler Hersteller mittlerer Grösse. Im deutsch- und englischsprachigen Raum werden in jüngerer Zeit sehr viele Notebook-Modelle von Asustec getestet. Allerdings schafften es in diesen Tests bisher relativ wenige Modelle in Top-Positionen bzgl. Gesamtwertung und Preis/Leistungs-Bewertung.
