What at first might seem like a gimmick seems to be something of a double-edged sword. In fact, it's not a gimmick, the rotating screen has some very real uses, and even as a tablet it's perfectly usable, if a little heavy. And, if the price for the i7 is just too steep, then consider the i5 with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD, it starts at £999, and is more than powerful enough for most people. For the best value, an extra £150 gets you a 256GB SSD and 8GB of ram with the i5.

Overall, the XPS 12 performed well in our benchmark tests. It earned the top spot in the PCMark benchmark which measures a system's overall performance and responsiveness. In real-world usage, the system performed well and felt very quick overall. Battery life is a bit of a disappointment with the XPS 12, however. Since the battery is not user replaceable, don’t expect to get a full day's worth of work from the machine without a nearby power source.

With a starting price of Rs 94,990, the XPS 12 is one expensive notebook, even for an Ultrabook. While it does have a very good feature set, behind the fancy new rotating screen, it’s a very average performing notebook. The hybrid nature of the device is fun to use, but we’re sure that the novelty will wear off after a while. The Windows 8 store has still a long way to go in terms of Windows apps and until that happens, traditional desktop applications will still rule—and you don’t need a fancy touchscreen to use them.

The Dell XPS 12 brings the full Windows 8 experience to the table thanks to its convertible tablet form factor. Dell's screen flipping mechanism is as unique as it is rock solid; it turns into a great tablet in a matter of seconds. The 12.5-inch display is absolutely beautiful and the touch screen functionality works perfectly in Windows 8. The screen's full HD resolution (1920x1080) has tons of space to use two windows side by side or look at high-res pictures and video in exquisite detail. And if you don't want to use the tablet mode, the XPS 12's backlit keyboard and clickpad are fantastic.
