Obwohl Android für viele Smartphone-Hersteller in verschiedenen Ländern lizenziert ist, produziert Google immer noch eine eigene Reihe von Smartphones, um einen Maßstab für das Android-Betriebssystem zu setzen. Die Geräte können direkt mit iPhones konkurrieren und sie vielleicht sogar übertreffen. Das Pixel 3a ist der neueste Zugang, und jetzt, um preisbewussten Kunden etwas zu bieten, kam noch eine leichtere Version hinzu, das Pixel 3a. Es sieht fast genau so aus wie das Pixel 3, allerdings ist es mit einem Kunststoffgehäuse und Dragontail-Glas hergestellt. Letzteres schützt ein 5,6-Zoll-OLED-Display mit einer Auflösung von 1080 x 2220 Pixel. Die Einfassung ist recht auffällig. Trotz des hohen Preises sieht das Smartphone nicht sehr hochwertig aus. Im Inneren steckt ein Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 Mid-Range-Prozessor, gekoppelt mit 64 GB Speicherplatz und 4 GB Arbeitsspeicher. Der eingebaute Speicher kann nicht mit einer Speicherkarte erweitert werden. Obwohl es günstiger und schwächer als das Pixel 3 ist, verfügt das 3a über die genau gleiche Kamera wie sein teurerer Bruder. Die 12,2-MP-Hauptkamera ist immer noch eine der besten zurzeit, was vor allem der Bildverarbeitung zu verdanken ist. Auf dem Papier mag die Kamera zwar schwächer als viele andere sein, doch sie ist tatsächlich eine der besten auf dem Markt. Bei der Vorderkamera handelt es sich um eine gewöhnliche 8-MP-Weitwinkelkamera mit f/2.0.

Die Stereolautsprecher liefern keinen herausragenden Klang. Das Pixel 3a ist mit Bluetooth 5, einem USB-Typ-C-Anschluss und einem recht kleinen 3000-mAh-Akku ausgestattet, der Schnellladen unterstützt. Der Fingerabdruck-Leser befindet sich auf der Hinterseite des Smartphones, laut Tests ist er blitzschnell. Das Pixel 3a ist in drei Farben erhältlich, Just Black, Clearly White und Purple-ish. Auf der Oberfläche erscheint das Gerät wegen des Preises nicht sehr verlockend, da einige andere Android-Smartphones viel mehr in dieser Preisklasse bieten. Doch dieses Gerät ist für andere Nutzer gedacht. Das saubere Android-Erlebnis und die angepasste Hardware bieten das beste Android-Erlebnis für Power-Nutzer. Dieses Smartphone wird sehr lange aushalten, ohne langsamer zu werden. Die ausgezeichnete Kamera-Software übertrifft außerdem andere Geräte. Wenn man allerdings hohen Wert auf Design legt, sollte man das Pixel 3a überspringen. Da die Verkaufszahlen des Pixel 3 sinken, brachte Google das Pixel 3a auf den Markt, um Kunden zu erobern, die nach sauberer Leistung zu einem günstigen Preis suchen.
