I'd recommend the Galaxy A03S to anyone who wants to spend less than $200 on a new Samsung phone. Since it's the newest of the three phones, it'll get more years of software and security updates. I also found that it offered respectable performance for the price. While the A12 does take better photos, I didn't think the step up in quality was worth the extra $20. Instead, buy the A03S and invest that $20 toward the microSD card you'll need. If you wanted to check out other sub-$200 phones that aren't made by Samsung, Motorola has the $160 Moto G Pure phone and a $200 Moto G Power phone. The OnePlus Nord N200 5G goes slightly above the $200 threshold at $240, but it offers 5G connectivity.

The Galaxy A02s is a good smartphone if you only need the basics and you’re working with a tight budget. It’s hands-down the most affordable way to get your hands on Samsung’s One UI 3.1, but the processor can’t always keep up and the cameras won’t be your go-to for many family photos. That said, if you want a cheap way to watch your favorite shows and use your wired headphones, the Galaxy A02s is happy to oblige. If you’re willing to expand your budget a bit, there are plenty of Galaxy A02s rivals to consider for under $200. Samsung’s own Galaxy A12 ($179) might be one of the best, with a significantly better camera and a side-mounted fingerprint reader for not much more money. There’s also the Motorola Moto G Play ($169) that ditches the third camera but offers near-stock Android and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. Finally, the Nokia G10 ($149) offers splash protection, a slightly bigger battery, and a better base configuration.

The Galaxy A02s isn't competing with flagships or even mid-range devices. It's slow enough that some basic software features are just about unusable without a great deal of patience. But everything works, it's $110, and you can depend on Samsung to value your security and keep the phone safe to use for the next four years. It may be slow, but it's reliable. In all, I'm pretty stunned at what you can get today for such a low price. Admittedly, for just $60 more, you can get the $170 Moto G Play, which I also like. The Moto is much, much faster — the new Snapdragon 460 positively flies compared to the somewhat decrepit Snapdragon 450 in the A02s. Plus, the Moto has a fingerprint sensor, among other benefits. The A02s is, by all hardware metrics, a worse smartphone, but Moto's software commitment for most of its phones is basically a joke in 2021; it abandons them so quickly.
