Long-term, the U41JF is a stopgap solution while we await the inevitable Sandy Bridge refresh of ASUS’ U-series. It also happens to have some good design decisions and component choices to help keep costs down. The use of Intel’s Core i3 processors gives ASUS most of the performance offered by more expensive Core i5 CPUs, and with the 15% overclock the i3-380M can actually surpass everything but the dual-core i7 parts—and Sandy Bridge, but that’s another matter.

The biggest problem with the Asus U41JF is its overall look. Though Asus obviously sought to emulate the Macbook Pro with its brushed-aluminum casing, Chiclet-style keyboard, and sleek(ish) design, the U41JF just ends up looking really cheap. Factor in the laptop's generally cheap feel, and you have a basis for looking elsewhere.One nicer-looking, more durable feeling laptop with a similar price is the Gateway ID49C13u ($840), which received a WorldBench 6 score (106) and performed similarly well in our graphics tests.

On paper the U41JF is a solid mid-range entertainment notebook; in real life it suffers from numerous issues that might steer away customers. The build quality is below average; the chassis has too much flex and feels cheap. The keyboard has an abnormal amount of flex and provides a mediocre typing experience. The Touchpad has a pleasant surface but has poor tracking accuracy and the buttons missed a high percentage of my intended clicks. The U41JF is not without its pluses, however; graphics performance is excellent and the seven and a half hours of battery life is fantastic. The chassis is also quite slim and the notebook itself looks respectable. When all is said and done, however, the ASUS U41JF is not overwhelmingly recommendable for the above-stated reasons.

The ASUS U41Jf has plenty going for it. Its long battery life, great performance, and robust graphics mean this notebook can work for hours, followed by a quick round of Modern Warfare to blow off steam. We wished there was less flex to the keyboard and that the speakers were louder, but there's no denying this 14-inch laptop's muscle.

Asustek Computer may still be best known for its low-cost Netbooks, and occasional high-end reaches such as its Republic of Gamers desktop replacements, but the company churns out a fair number of middle-of-the-road systems as well. The Asus U41JF is a workmanlike but uninspiring 14-inch laptop that offers decent performance and graphics and excellent battery life, but costs nearly as much as a MacBook.

One last selling point for the Asus U41JF-A1 is the battery life, which is fantastic and beats out pretty much all other 14-inch laptops on the market today. The massive 83WH battery provides over 8 hours of battery life on average, which is at least 2 hours longer than an Apple Macbook can do.

Mainstream laptops that can muscle their way through any task aren't hard to find, but find me one with a battery that can last an entire day. It doesn't happen very often. The Asus U41JF-A1 picks up where the Asus U45Jc-A1 left off, combining some of the fastest parts—the highest-clocked Core i3 processor and Nvidia GeForce 425M GT graphics chip—with the biggest battery available. No other mainstream laptop on the market strikes such a strong balance between performance and battery life.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M: Nachfolger der GeForce GT 335M mit DirectX 11 Support.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.

380M: Der Core i3-380M taktet maximal mit 2.54 GHz und bietet keine automatische Übertaktung per Turbo Boost. Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. 14.1": 14 Zoll Display-Grösse stellt ein Mittelding zwischen den kleinen Subnotebook-Formaten und dem 15 Zoll-Standard-Display dar. Der Grund der Beliebtheit mittelgrosser Displays ist, dass diese Größe einigermaßen augenschonend ist und dennoch nicht allzu viel Strom verbraucht und die Geräte noch halbwegs kompakt sein können.

78.33%: Weltbewegend ist diese Bewertung nicht. Obwohl es bei den meisten Websites einem "Befriedigend" entspricht, muss man bedenken, dass es kaum Notebooks gibt, die unter 60% erhalten. Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich klingen oft nicht schlecht, sind aber oft verklausulierte Euphemismen. Dieses Notebook wird von den Testern eigentlich als unterdurchschnittlich angesehen, eine Kaufempfehlung kann man nur mit viel Wohlwollen darin sehen.
