Samsung gehört mit dem Q1 zu den ersten Anbietern von UMPC. Das 780 Gramm leichte Gerät hat ein Gehäuse im edlen Klavierlack-Design - allerdings sieht man darauf jeden Fingerabdruck. Das ist wohl auch Samsung klar, denn der Hersteller legt gleich ein Mikrofasertuch für die Gehäusepolitur bei. Im Inneren des Q1 werkelt ein 900 MHz schneller Ultra-Low-Voltage Celeron mit Intel-910GML-Chipsatz.

Auf dem ersten Blick kann man den Samsung Q1 nicht wirklich einordnen... ist es ein digitaler Bilderrahmen, oder die Steuerkonsole für die Heim-Automation, oder gar eine tragbare Spielkonsole? Ein Eingabegerät für klinische Räume, ein zukunftsorientierter Multimediaplayer oder vielleicht doch ein Office-PC? Der Samsung Q1 ist ein Ultra Mobile PC, wo es noch schwer ist herauszufinden, welche Art von Einsatz genau dazu passt. In vertikale Märkte als System Solution oder im Businessumfeld findet er zur Zeit sicher seinen besten Absatzmarkt. Hier ist große Rechenleistung nicht unbedingt gefragt, sondern eher das Öffnen und Bearbeiten von Tabellen, kurzen Texten und Emails wo man auch mit Stifteingabe gut zurecht kommen kann. Weil für aufwendige Aufgaben der Prozessor einfach zu schwach ist, die Grafikkarte zum Spielen nicht ausreicht und dem Gerät zum Abspielen von DVDs ein Laufwerk fehlt, fallen diese Bereiche erstmals weg.

Samsungs Q1 erregt Aufsehen: Der 770 Gramm leichte Winzling ist ein vollwertiges Notebook ohne Tastatur. Ohne Zweifel: Der Ultra-Mobile-PC ist ein faszinierendes Stück Technik, das nicht nur bei eingefleischten Freaks den „Haben-will“-Greifreflex auslöst. Auf den ersten Blick wird den Testern aber nicht so recht klar, was sie mit dem Samsung Q1 machen sollen. Als Werkzeug für den Businessalltag ist er mangels Tastatur nicht geeignet, als Spielekonsole für Privatleute nicht schnell genug und als Navigationssystem zu teuer. Das Q1 kann alles ein bisschen – und ist deswegen vielleicht ideal für Anwender, die genau danach suchen: Nach einem ultraportablen Gerät mit voller Windows-XP-Funktionalität, mit dem sie hin und wieder Notizen machen und per WLAN oder optionaler UMTS-Karte ihre Mails checken oder im Netz surfen.

Für nur 1200 Euro bietet Samsung mit dem Q1 ein Leichtgewicht mit sehr langer Laufzeit. Schwarzer Klavierlack verleiht ihm ein edles Aussehen. Die Bedienung über Touchscreen oder Knöpfe im Stil der Gameboys ist denkbar einfach. MPEG-Videos laufen ruckelfrei und der Sound des kleinen Geräts ist erstaunlich gut.

Ein wirklich interessantes Device mit einem großen Potenzial. Allerdings ist das Device zum derzeitigen Preis sicher nicht massentauglich. Die hochwertige Verarbeitung, das schicke Design und nicht zuletzt die Möglichkeiten, die der Anwender mit dem Samsung Q1 hat, rechtfertigen den Preis in diesem Fall aber durchaus.

Als Tablet PC ist der Q1 derzeit konkurrenzlos mobil und günstig. Bei der Stifteingabe verhält er sich aber unhandlicher als größere Tablet-PCs. Als Wiedergabegerät überzeugt er: Doch als bloßer Video- oder MP3-Player beziehungsweise Surfterminal ist er mit rund 1200 Euro eindeutig zu teuer. Potenzial hat der Formfaktor UMPC auf alle Fälle: Mit GPS-Modul wäre der Q1 ein ideales Navigationssystem, mit UMTS-Karte das perfekte mobile Surfgerät - beides will Samsung übrigens als Option noch im Lauf des Jahres anbieten. Würde man dann noch einen TV-Tuner plus Antenne integrieren - der Q1 wäre zu diesem Preis ein mobiles Traumgerät.

Leider bringt er aber auch keine besonderen Fähigkeiten mit, die diese Nachteile kompensieren würden. Samsungs Q1 ist der erste Vertreter einer neuen Art von Computern - ein Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC). Samsung hat mit dem Q1 auf Anhieb einen attraktiven UMPC erschaffen – der Knackpunkt dürfte der Preis sein: Da UMPC nicht wirklich als Ersatz für einen echten PC zu sehen sind, sondern eher als Zusatz-Produkte für den mobilen Alltag, kommt mittelfristig wohl erst bei Preisen ab 600 Euro abwärts Schwung in den Markt. Denn erst dann werden viele Anwender beginnen, den Kauf eines UMPC als Video-Abspieler mit perfekter Kompatibilität, als Super-PDA oder sogar als Zweit-Notebook zu erwägen.

Externally, the Q1 hasn't changed at all since we last saw it, but there have been changes on the inside. There's a 32GB solid-state hard disk, the RAM has been bumped up to 1GB from 512MB and you also get 802.11a/b/g wireless. Despite the improved specifications, the Q1-SSD is anything but mobile computing nirvana.

The Q1 SSD is a technology showcase for Samsung; a halo effect product if you like. Creating a portable device with 32GB of solid state storage is nothing to be sniffed at, and Samsung has raised the bar when it comes to mobile technology. Is the Q1 SSD worth the money? That depends on whether you like to be at the bleeding edge of technology, and of course, whether you think that the UMPC platform is worth having in the first place. Whether or not you like the idea of an Ultra Mobile PC doesn’t change the fact that Samsung has created an impressive technology demonstration with the Q1 SSD. The solid state drive means that there are no moving parts and thus reduces the chance of failure, even if the user is rough. The performance improvements are obvious, while the reduction in battery drain is welcome. What I’d really like to see though, is one of Samsung’s ultra-portable notebooks with one of these drives inside it.

Top marks to Samsung for creating a beautifully designed and constructed ultra mobile PC. The Q1 really does look the part and in many ways it has the ability to back up its stylish appearance. The inclusion of the USB keyboard travel pack is more of an obvious necessity than a good idea, making the Q1 a usable mobile computer. General browsing and even watching video is a joy on this little machine, but you really want to do these things on the move, without being tethered to a power socket. Ideally I’d like to see the next Q1 (the Q2 maybe?) ship with a higher resolution screen – preferably 1,024 pixels wide – and better battery life. Considering that Sony can squeeze seven hours out of the TX2XP, I have no doubt that Samsung can manage better battery life in the next Q1, but as the current Q1 stands, it’s not the ultimate mobile computer that it should be.

Samsung's Q1 and TabletKiosk's EO--the first systems based on the Microsoft/Intel Ultra Mobile PC specification--prove you can cram an awful lot into a small package. Both devices condense the best features of a tablet into a package that's less than half the size and weight of a typical laptop. One of the things that is missing is the $500 to $1000 price that Microsoft and Intel had promised for UMPC. My 512MB configuration of the shipping Q1 sells for $1099, and the shipping 1GB EO I tested sells for $1164 (TabletKiosk sells an $899 unit with only 256MB of memory). Those prices don't include an external optical drive, a keyboard, or an extra battery pack--all options many users will consider necessities.

With Samsung's novel Q1 device ($1,099 direct), the much-hyped UMPC platform by Microsoft and Intel has arrived. First developed as part of the Origami project, these new, tiny Windows-based PCs are supposed to redefine how you compute on the go. In the end, though, I feel that the UMPC idea is just another questionable attempt by Bill Gates to revive the Slate Tablet. At first glance, the Q1 looks like a pumped-up Sony PSP. Even the scroll button resembles the joystick on the PSP. The big difference, of course, is that the Q1 is a fully functional PC loaded with the Windows XP (Tablet Edition) operating system.

The Samsung Q1b has prices starting at $899 in some places, which can be a good buy if your needs are simply that of a computing Tablet device that can serve as a weekend/weeknight warrior and you need the robustness of Windows XP applications. It's probably best served in short stints though, and can come in handy during plane and car trips. I like the weight, and the AVStudio feature of being able to use the multimedia aspects without booting into Windows. I think that with some refinement to the battery drain when Wi-Fi is on, a better joystick and a lower price, Samsung could have a winner in the mainstream marketplace.

If you ever wished for a PDA with a larger screen, or wanted that three-pound ultraportable to be, well, more portable, then Samsung's novel Q1P SSD will be right up your alley. We suspect, however, that you occupy a fairly narrow alley. Although this Ultra-Mobile PC is one of the first to pack a solid-state storage drive, we are left wondering where and when we would prefer using it more than a larger or smaller alternative.

Ultimately, the $1,299 Samsung Q1 Ultra Premium, like its predecessors, feels like a pricey mobile Internet device. We could actually get more work done on a mini-notebook such as the HP 2133 Mini-Note (starting price of $599), which features a nearly full-size keyboard, larger 8.9-inch (1280 x 720) display, and an ExpressCard slot. And the high-end version of that notebook costs $750 less. Unless you’re absolutely enthralled with having tablet functionality, the Samsung Q1 is one to pass on.

The Ultra Mobile PC, or UMPC for short, is a breed of computer that is like a small laptop without a hinged screen. Or, if you prefer, like a large handheld computer. Either way, it is an unusual format for a computer. Too large for the pocket, too small for serious use as your main computer.
The Q1 Ultra is Samsung's second attempt at the UMPC format. It is an improvement on what went before, but it does not come cheap and it doesn't live up to expectations in every respect. We remain unconvinced about the UMPC format and await further developments.

We used it for a couple of weeks and never really got used to the limited battery or slow start up. It’s got a WOW factor and Samsung is certainly moving the UMPC in the right direction but the concept just hasn’t found it’s purpose yet. It’s a brave new design that improves usability but we’re still left wondering who will actually use it.

It can't replace your laptop as an everyday productivity tool because it's still too underpowered, and, despite the addition of a small keyboard split across the screen, text input becomes a chore for anything more than typing a URL or the briefest of e-mail responses. So, let's view it as a portable media player. The Q1 Ultra's 7-inch screen is far larger than anything you'd find on a smart phone or other handheld device, but its meager specs struggle to power Windows Vista and even simple tasks such as smoothly playing video. At $1,199, it's cheaper than other UMPC we've seen, but that price is harder to justify when you see everything the iPhone can do for half that amount. However, the Q1 Ultra remains one of the cheapest UMPC you'll find and it's definitely the best model we've tested so far. Samsung's Q1 Ultra is intriguing, but more for its potential than its reality. Ideally, UMPC would be media powerhouses that would be comfortable for light business tasks such as editing documents and for web browsing and email. However, the Samsung Q1 Ultra, while a useful mobile web and email tool, isn't optimal for other mobile uses. It is about as expensive as many laptops but not as comfortable to use. It's far larger and more expensive than most mobile devices but isn't more adept at tasks such as media playback. In other words, this could be a great device, but it isn't compelling in its present form and price. On the other hand, if it had twice the processor speed and half the price, the Samsung Q1 Ultra would deserve to be a huge hit.

Bottom line: The second-generation Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC adds a keyboard and pointing devices, but it's still a work in progress when it comes to usability, performance, and price. Pros: Pointing stick and mouse buttons are a pleasure to surf with. Compact size. Sweet screen. Cons: Integrated keyboard is welcome but needs work. Processing power is not up to speed with Vista's demands. Only 1GB system memory. Needs higher screen resolution. Still pricey.

Samsung: Die Samsung Group ist der größte südkoreanische Mischkonzern. In der Samsung-Gruppe sind mehr als 250.000 Menschen beschäftigt, und sie gehört zu den weltweit größten Unternehmen gemessen an Umsatz und Marktstärke. Samsung zahlt in Südkorea 5 Milliarden Euro Steuern, was 8 Prozent der Staatseinnahmen entspricht, und bestreitet einen Fünftel der südkoreanischen Exporte. Der Name Samsung bedeutet im Koreanischen "Drei Sterne" und repräsentiert die drei Söhne des Firmengründers. Das Unternehmen wurde 1938 als Lebensmittelladen gegründet. Mit der 1969 gegründeten Tochter Samsung Electronics nahm Samsung die Fertigung elektrotechnischer Artikel in Angriff, wobei man sich frühzeitig auf Unterhaltungselektronik und Haushaltsgeräte konzentrierte. 3D Spiele sind auf diesen Vertretern nur in Ausnahmen spielbar, grundsätzlich sind die Grafikkarten hierfür jedoch nicht geeignet. Office Programme und Internet surfen dürfte jedoch ohne Problem laufen.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 900: Mobiler onboard (shared Memory) Grafikchip (auf Mobile Intel 915GM Chipsatz), ohne Hardware T&L - kaum spielefähig. Für Office und andere Anwendungsprogramme ohne 3D sehr gut geeignet.

VIA Chrome9 HC: Integrierte (shared Memory) Grafikkarte für Notebooks mit DirectX 9.0 Unterstützung  und Videobeschleunigung. Leistungsmäßig unter aktuellen integrierten Grafikkarten und  nur zur ruckeligen Darstellung von Windows Vistas Aero Oberfläche fähig.

Diese Karten können nur sehr alte und sehr anspruchslose 3D Spiele flüssig darstellen.  Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung oder (SD) Videoschnitt sind jedoch ohne große Einschränkungen möglich.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Integrierter (onboard) Grafikchip auf Mobile Intel 945GM/C/Z/ME/ML Chipsätzen und Nachfolger des GMA 900. Kein Hardware T&L (für manche Spiele benötigt). Für Spiele kaum geeignet.

Intel Celeron M: Eigentlich ein Pentium M mit halbiertem Level 2 Cache und auf FSB 400 MHz beschränkt. Kaum langsamere Geschwindigkeit als ein gleichgetakteter Pentium M zeichnet diesen Prozessor aus. Jedoch kann er nicht dynamisch die Geschwindigkeit ändern wie der Pentium M und braucht deshalb ohne Last mehr Strom.
Er ist auch als Low Voltage Version erhältlich mit sehr geringem Stromverbrauch.

Die 4xx Serie basiert auf den Core Solo und hat einen Front Side Bus (FSB) von 533 MHz, jedoch im Vergleich nur 1 statt 2 MB L2 Cache. Er dürfte jedoch bei Büroanwendungen leistungsmäßig gut mithalten (wie schon die 3xx Serie).

Die 5xx Serie basiert auf den Core 2 Solo (Merorm Architektur) und dürfte geringfügig schneller als ein gleichgetakteter 4xx Celeron M sein. Der Celeron unterstützt jedoch keine Virtualisierungstechnik und erhält kein ViiV und vPRO Zertifikat (im Gegensatz zum Core 2 Solo).

VIA C7-M: Stromsparende Prozessoren, jedoch nicht so schnell wie ein gleichgetakteter Pentium / AMD Prozessor

Intel Pentium M: Mit Intel Chipsatz (855 oder 915) und Intel WLAN auch unter der Bezeichnung Centrino bekannt.
Im Vergleich sehr schnell pro Megahertz und sehr genügsam. Sehr gute Ganzzahlen Performance, leichte Schwächen bei Gleitzahlen Berechnungen.
Auch als Low Voltage Version erhältlich mit sehr geringem Stromverbrauch.

Intel Mobile A: Abgespeckter Celeron-M Core für UMPC.

7.0: Das ist eines der kleinsten Formate, das für Netbooks, Subnotebooks oder UMPC verwendet wurde. Es gibt nur fast keine Modelle mit diesem Format. Langes Arbeiten ist hier unpraktisch, dieser winzige Display ist für zwischendurch unterwegs gedacht. Der Vorteil von Netbooks/Subnotebooks liegt darin, dass das ganze Gerät klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das winzige Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten sehr anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen sind fast nicht nutzbar.

Dieses Subnotebook/Netbook/UMPC, sofern man es als solches überhaupt bezeichnen kann, gehört zu den leichtesten Notebooks überhaupt und kann klarerweise hervorragend getragen werden. Es gibt kaum Sub-Notebooks, aber ein paar Netbooks in dieser extremen Gewichtsklasse. 7-9 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.

64.2%: Eine so schlechte Bewertung ist selten. Es gibt nur wenige Notebooks, die schlechter beurteilt wurden. Auch wenn Verbalbeurteilungen in diesem Bereich meist "genügend" oder "ausreichend" lauten, so sind dies meist Euphemismen.
