EN→DEPC-based gaming handhelds are still in their infancy. This first generation from major players shows a lot of promise though. The Asus ROG Ally, in particular, is a capable Windows-based gaming handheld that has only gotten better over the past few months thanks to software updates. During that time, Asus has increased performance, fixed bugs, and added additional features—which shows that it is committed to supporting the device over time and improving the experience. Should you buy the Asus ROG Ally? It’s difficult to compete against the refreshed Steam Deck OLED handheld, but the ROG Ally still manages to stand out in some key ways. It runs Windows for users who prefer a Windows-based OS or want to use it as a Windows PC when docked.

EN→DESo, the ROG Ally may not be the go-to choice for everyone. For a good number of gamers, the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch OLED may still hold the top spots. But for those hungry for extra firepower or the enhanced flexibility that Windows offers, the ROG Ally is a remarkable contender. With a price point of US$699.99 (Singapore's pricing will differ), it's a fair deal and is recommended for those intrigued, though with a few minor reservations. If you're mulling over a gaming laptop, the ROG Ally, with its distinctive form, may blend into your lifestyle more seamlessly. ASUS deserves a pat on the back for this endeavour, and with potential for future software enhancements and personalised DIY tweaks, it could turn out to be a real winner for the right user.

EN→DEAnd I truly wish that chip is in the Ally X. Perhaps the battery life could be extended even further too. Now then, I have a dilemma. Since I am already using an ROG Ally, should I upgrade to the Ally X? Is it even considered an upgrade since the performance is the same, but I get a bunch of quality of life improvements on the Ally X? As for the price, the ROG Ally X is at RM4,299 – which is a whole thousand more than the ROG Ally when it was first announced. Given that the Ally has come down in price, it’s not easy to pick between the Ally and the Ally X. Remember – Ally X has a lot of upgrades over the original Ally, but ultimately – you still get the same level of performance at double the battery life and no more annoying fan noise.

EN→DEThe ROG Ally undeniably ups the ante, showcasing a more refined design, an operating system that's easier to navigate, and a superior gaming prowess. However, its price tag, which is twice that of the Steam Deck, puts it in the same range as entry-level gaming laptops, making it a tough sell for some. The performance it delivers is striking for a device you can hold in your hands, boasting an average 10fps lead over the Steam Deck. But it's not an open-and-shut case. The device has a hard time reaching frame rates high enough to take full advantage of the 120Hz refresh rate. Add to that, certain games like Returnal are unplayable, even with graphics settings dialed down. Additionally, the relatively short battery life is a concern, especially for a device that's designed to offer the convenience of portability over a gaming laptop.

EN→DEThe Asus ROG Ally provides improvements upon the Steam Deck formula in most areas, with the more streamlined nature of Valve’s software being that devices main coup over the Asus. But, it offers a sleeker chassis, a more open operating system as well as faster gaming performance. You will have to fork out around twice the price of the Steam Deck to get this machine though. There’s now key competition at a similar price now too, with the Lenovo Legion Go offering a larger and higher resolution display, as well as the neat trick of detachable controllers. However, the Asus ROG Ally beats it for its first-party software experience, portability and more satisying controls. Performance is impressive given the fact this is a handheld system but, with a typical 10fps improvement on the Steam Deck, it’s not significant enough to be a no-brainer purchase. It’s difficult to hit a high enough frame rate to make the most of the 120Hz refresh rate and some games, such as Returnal, are unplayable even with compromised graphics settings.

At a cent shy of $800, the Ally X is also bordering on RTX 4050 gaming laptop territory but one doesn't really buy a handheld PC to use it for the same tasks as a laptop. With a keyboard and mouse, you can do just that (this review has been written with Ally X plugged into a dock and monitor), though that's all extra expense. But if you just want the best handheld gaming performance, in a comfortable and portable form factor, that will last for hours—there's really only one choice and it's the ROG Ally X. Asus has taken what was a brilliant but flawed gaming system and altered everything that held the original Ally back from being truly great. It will be interesting to see how much better the next iteration will be. The original ROG Ally was flawed but brilliant. The updated Ally X is just brilliant and any remaining issues are entirely down to Windows not being very suited to small screens on handheld devices.

EN→DEEven a year after its release, the ASUS ROG Ally X is a still well-rounded Windows PC handheld and one of the best options on the market. The performance's solid, the software's great, the screen's more than decent, and you've got a massive battery that allows you to game for hours on end without the need for a charger. The analog sticks, one of the original Ally's pain points, have received a big upgrade on the ROG Ally X, and I also like the wider and more comfortable hall effect triggers. The device comes with two USB ports, one of which is USB4, and while not as good as the Steam Deck or MSI Claw 8 at low power levels (12 W and below), most indie and 2D games still work fine when you use the "Silent" power preset, or manually set TDP to 12 W or below.

EN→DEIf you’re looking for a premium, all-in-one handheld gaming PC, this is one of the best options around. The ROG Ally X has multiple strengths over both the competition and its predecessor. From its functionality as a multi-platform-friendly device out of the box (it even comes with a few months of Game Pass Ultimate for free) to its specs that enable you to play the latest and greatest games at surprisingly high fidelity for a handheld, you get what you pay for with the Ally X. Even though its battery life isn’t the best, its performance, ability to run any PC gaming platform and suite of options put it head and shoulders above the competition. I’ve been loving the ease it brings to allowing me to switch between Steam, Xbox, Epic Games and Ubisoft’s launchers without jumping through any unnecessary hoops.

EN→DEThe ROG Ally X may not convince most current Ally owners to upgrade, especially not on a performance basis, but it has some objectively sweet improvements. A redesigned chassis with several ergonomic and feedback improvements, superior connectivity, and much longer battery life make a difference. Even though I may prefer the slightly slimmer design of the original, the added cost seems worth the concessions and price difference. The best Steam Deck alternative just got better.

EN→DENow comes the main question. That if you read this review you might be wondering, should I buy this device? I think for anyone who loves gaming and wants an extremely portable way to do so, this is an excellent purchase to make. In my personal opinion, this is the best gaming handheld on the market right now. I find it nearly as comfortable as the Steam Deck, maybe even more so. It runs games with better performance in any of the games I have tested, too. While the overall user interface is better on Steam Deck, this isn’t by a whole lot. I think the big takeaway here is asking yourself if all you’re doing is playing Steam games. If you play games in different clients, I think the ROG Ally X is the clear choice.

EN→DEThe ROG Ally X was introduced as a minor refresh to the Ally, but it is much better than the original in every possible way. You get double the battery life, a much more comfortable design, and a small performance uplift. For the asking price of Rs 89,990, it is considerably expensive than the Ally or even the Steam Deck. In fact, ASUS has dropped the price of the original Ally with the Z1 Extreme CPU down to Rs 40,000. For this reason alone, I would not recommend buying the Ally X if you already own any of the popular AMD Z1 Extreme powered consoles.Rather the Ally X is more suitable for the ones who have been holding back and saving their money for an all-round champion.

EN→DEWhen it launched in 2023, the Asus ROG Ally set a high baseline for Windows-based gaming handhelds. It couldn't touch the Steam Deck OLED in terms of battery efficiency, but its impressive performance on modern games, its compact and lightweight design, and its 120Hz display made it the handheld to beat. With the ROG Ally X, Asus has clearly kept what already worked well and improved what was lacking. The device's bigger battery, faster (and more) memory, and better cooling results in an efficient and consistent performer that beats out the competition on nearly every metric. The cost of those crucial upgrades, however, is rather steep.

EN→DEThe ASUS ROG Ally X is quite probably the most decent Windows gaming handheld I have reviewed in a long time. It’s a console I can definitely and whole-heartedly recommend, though its RM4,299 price tag is almost certainly going to cause hesitation among potential adopters, especially among newcomers to the gaming handheld ecosystem. As pricey as it is, though, the overall improvements with this handheld make it hard to recommend folks to opt for the first generation Ally. Again, it’s more polished, has significantly improved battery life, a microSD card slot that won’t barbeque your external storage with its thermals, and ports that are infinitely more practical for the user.

EN→DEWith all the improvements made, the ROG Ally X now easily gives the Legion Go a run for its money as the best gaming handheld right now. I also like that it now sports a more ergonomic button layout, with the back buttons being made smaller, which should help reduce accidental presses during gameplay sessions. Additionally, the analog sticks and face buttons are now positioned at a more comfortable angle, making it easier and more comfortable for gamers to move their thumbs between them. I wish ROG could have made more changes to the ROG Ally X, such as detachable controllers or a back stand, for example.

Additionally, the analog sticks and face buttons are now positioned at a more comfortable angle, making it easier and more comfortable for gamers to move their thumbs between them. I wish ROG could have made more changes to the ROG Ally X, such as detachable controllers or a back stand, for example.

EN→DEWhile the improvements are impressive, should you upgrade to the ROG Ally X if you already own the original with the Z1 Extreme in the Philippines? Our recommendation is to skip it if you can since you’ve most likely invested enough money to swap out the SSD, buy a JSAUX grip case for it, and maybe even a high-capacity power bank to extend gameplay while you’re out and about. The improvements are impressive but we think that you should wait for something with better internals to come around unless you’ve got a stacked bank account or your original breaks down beyond repair.

EN→DEThe Asus Ally X, for me, is the best Windows handheld on the market. It is indeed impressive, and I wonder about the engineering effort that went into making the Ally X a powerful device in a compact form factor. Although it doesn’t come cheap (I wish it were priced lower), it is terrific for what it offers. A supercharged handheld console that brings PC gaming straight out of the box to a form factor I can take everywhere I go becomes even more tempting.

In this episode of Tech Takedown, Paul makes his case for why the ASUS ROG Ally X is the best gaming handheld you can currently buy. With its improved design, slightly beefier specs, and fixes, in many ways it is the best Windows 11 gaming handheld. But… in Tony’s favor, compared to the very refined Steam Deck OLED - which has a gorgeous display and isn’t plagued by Windows 11's horrible touch interface, it all comes down to performance vs usability. Which handheld do you think wins?

EN→DEUltimately, we can't tell you whether the extra investment is worth it, because it's going to depend a lot on how you use the hardware. In a way, the Ally X and Steam Deck serve somewhat different niches. If you are primarily keen on indie games and emulation of older systems, then the Steam Deck might be a better choice. However, if you want the flexibility of a full Windows experience, and the horsepower to handle modern AAA games and PS3 emulation, then the ASUS ROG Ally X is for you.

EN→DEThe Asus ROG Ally X is the surprise follow-up to the ROG Ally, and is the latest entry in the increasingly-competitive handheld gaming PC market. Since Valve fired the starting gun on this latest arms race with the excellent Steam Deck, various gaming laptop makers have been keen to release their own handhelds, with the likes of MSI and Zotac releasing, or planning to release, their own takes on the form factor. Arguably the breakout star of this new breed of device was the original ROG Ally, which was launched in 2023. Less than a year later, Asus surprised us all by releasing a follow-up, the ROG Ally X.

EN→DEThe ROG Ally X doesn’t check all the boxes I personally need in a handheld. The one-two punch of performance and battery life is tempting, but not tempting enough to steer me away from a $549 or $649 Steam Deck OLED that will play my legacy library of Steam games more easily, then reliably go to sleep when I want to put it away. The customer support controversy is just one more reason to hesitate. But if you must have Windows or play the latest games on the go, the Ally X is the best Windows handheld yet. I hope it normalizes bigger batteries and VRR screens, and I hope Asus will seriously consider a SteamOS version, too. I hope to test it with Bazzite, an unofficial SteamOS clone, later this year.

EN→DEAnd I have to give Asus some props for Armoury Crate SE, its skin and utility software. I hate the full Armoury Crate that's on the company's ROG laptops, mostly because it's a hot mess of conflicting places to change settings. SE is designed to run on a smaller screen and is more manageable, though still a bit confusing. In addition to essential features, like control binding for both gamepad and desktop modes and lighting control, it also lets you manually adjust the fan and power settings, change the among of memory dedicated to the iGPU (though I didn't test it) and more. Between the price, the problems inherent in grafting a console-like experience on Windows and the uncertainty of how well any particular game may run on it, especially in a couple of years, it's hard to give anything other than a qualified recommendation for the Ally X.

EN→DEThe Asus ROG Ally X may not boast a new processor or snazzy OLED screen tech, but it fixes practically every complaint that consumers had about the first-gen handheld. It’s more ergonomically shaped with better control placement, offers improved cooling, boosted RAM and storage and, most importantly, a massive improvement in battery life. In fact, I’d argue that the ROG Ally X’s 80Wh battery is the main reason to opt for it over competing handhelds like the ROG Ally, Steam Deck OLED and Lenovo Legion Go, even at a more premium price point. The handheld delivers essentially double what you’d get from the regular Ally, offering around three hours of battery life in AAA games at the highest graphical settings in Performance mode, and over two hours in Turbo mode, with significantly better performance in certain titles. It’s still not going to beat something like the Nintendo Switch OLED, but for a PC gaming-focused handheld, it leads the pack.

EN→DEIf you’re new to the whole PC gaming handheld thing, and want to play more than just your Steam library without messing about with Linux, the Asus ROG Ally X is now the obvious choice. It lasts longer than the original, has an easily upgradeable SSD, and more RAM than any Steam Deck. The refined ergonomics also put both the MSI Claw and Lenovo Legion Go in the shade. It’s not perfect: Windows 11 still doesn’t feel entirely happy on a small screen, and the display’s colours and contrast aren’t a match for the Steam Deck OLED – even if the Ally’s higher resolution and refresh rate levels the playing field a bit. The price is a lot spicier than Valve’s handheld, too – it’s now almost in gaming laptop territory. Original ROG Ally shouldn’t be in a rush to upgrade, then, and the Steam Deck OLED remains my top pick – but the gap is narrower than ever.

If you want as much control over your portable gaming experience as possible, this is the best there is in Australia. In exchange for a higher price tag, you get more internal storage, a longer-lasting battery, and a better-quality design. Though it only serves as an in-between for the eventual ROG Ally 2, it sports tons of quality-of-life changes and enhancements that address nearly every issue buyers of the original ROG Ally had. For those looking for a new PC gaming handheld that's not the Steam Deck, this could truly be a contender for a true Steam Deck rival. However, the only drawback that could hold it back is that the processor hasn't been updated, meaning that performance will most likely not change too much from the original. And with that model's price going down while the ROG Ally X starts off quite pricey, this could end up being a major deciding factor in its success.

EN→DEAt Rs 1,14,990, the ROG Xbox Ally X costs more than a literal Xbox. That price is shocking no matter how you frame it, but within the niche market of premium gaming handhelds, similar devices with comparable specs hover around the same price point or higher. Now, some may think (or they may not), I’m just making a hypothetical scenario here that you can technically use them for browsing, document editing, or watching movies. Well, technically you can, but you can’t.After living with the Ally X and spending time with other handhelds, I’ve learned that these devices are singularly focused: they’re for gaming, not Windows productivity. The experience is clunky compared even to a Windows tablet let alone a laptop.

EN→DEMicrosoft's powerful handhelds continue to slightly baffle. They're accomplished in some regards, but their pricing means they're almost guaranteed to be niche in terms of overall sales – and the Xbox Ally X epitomises that. It's a great bit of kit if you can afford it – the best ROG Ally out there now, in fact, and up there as one of the best Windows handhelds ever on paper. However, it's also undeniably pricey – and used prices for the Asus ROG Ally X, for example, make that a hard sell. I think this Xbox machine is better than the standard Xbox Ally, since it's going to age more gracefully thanks to its more powerful chip, but I also don't know how many people want to spend that money right now. Especially without an OLED display upgrade.

EN→DEWe’ve at least mentioned ‘price’ in the above section twice, and there’s a reason for it – ASUS is asking for a whopping RM4,299 for one of these ROG Xbox Ally X handhelds, which is very pricey when you compare to the likes of Steam Deck and such. It’s starting to step into proper laptop territory, so those without particularly deep pockets will have to think twice about committing this much money for a gaming handheld, which is essentially just a downsized PC with an Xbox controller fused next to it. If you do have the ability to make this monetary commitment though, the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X currently offers an experience that very few models in the market can match today. Excellent ergonomics, special software, great performance, and overall just a plain well-built machine, making this one of the forerunners under Microsoft’s new vision of a quintessential “Xbox” that you can throw in your bag instead of sitting under your home TV.

EN→DEThe Asus ROG Xbox Ally X tries to bring the best of Windows to a gaming handheld. The company made a full attempt to attract gamers with its long list of features. The design is ergonomic and comfortable to hold, thanks to the new Xbox controller-inspired aesthetic. The performance of the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme is impressive for a gaming handheld, while Microsoft's Xbox Full Screen Experience represents a meaningful step forward for Windows handhelds, although it still has a long way to go. The Xbox integration still needs better optimisation, while adding an OLED option would have further sweetened the deal. The display is doable, and a 120Hz screen refresh rate does make a difference while scrolling through the user interface or playing games.

It's a phone made for people who want a smooth multimedia experience, a camera that performs well in bright light, and a brand that promises more than 2 years of OS support —something most other phone makers don't offer. However, its dated processor and modest low-light camera output limit its appeal for those seeking raw performance. EN→DEWhen the first ROG Ally arrived in Australia, the more affordable Steam Deck wasn’t yet out locally. Now that Valve’s device is available here, seeing a device cost nearly double the OLED Steam Deck variant raises an eyebrow. For that $1,599 price tag, the ROG Xbox Ally X does outperform cheaper devices. It plays PC games, new and old, well. Xbox’s controller grips are much more comfortable to use, even with the device’s still-heavy frame. There’s still no escaping the spectre of Windows 11, though. Not yet, at least. Despite some good attempts to streamline the user experience for handheld gaming, the Windows OS still frustrates, albeit less frequently. But for those with patience, a penchant for customisation, and the pennies to match, the ROG Xbox Ally X is a more powerful and more versatile gaming handheld than other iterations.

We have high performance for AAA games, effective cooling, an extremely comfortable design, sticks and triggers with Hall sensors, additional separate vibration motors, a high-quality display, good sound and excellent battery life in its class. But Microsoft's attempt to turn Windows 11 into an OS for portable consoles has not yet met expectations. There are a lot of glitches, bugs, freezes, unfinished parts and questions about the interface, behind which it has not yet been possible to completely disguise the same Windows 11 under the Xbox logo. It’s not trying to replace your console or your desktop; it’s trying to be a bit of both. And honestly, it pulls that off better than most would expect. Could it use an OLED? Absolutely. Is the Xbox integration still a little rough around the edges? Definitely. Is it expensive? Yeppers. But the mix of comfort, performance, thermals, and flexibility it offers is second to none. Just don’t look at it as a console or laptop substitute, as that’d be missing the point. EN→DEOur conclusion? This new Xbox interface really doesn't change anything about our recommendations for gaming handhelds. If you're already comfortable with using Windows 11 on a handheld, this is still Windows 11 on a handheld. If you're not comfortable with that, stick to SteamOS, which is more user-friendly albeit less compatible. As a product the ROG Xbox Ally X in particular offers the kind of phenomenal performance and all-day battery life that you'd expect of a $1,000 device. Ultimately, the new Xbox Experience really doesn't make a huge difference either way (nor does it hurt anything).

Each of these handheld consoles belongs to a different era in gaming, and each brought with it new experiences. I have lived through all of those eras, but one thing was always missing: a handheld console made by Microsoft. I still scratch my head and wonder why. Microsoft has created some of the strongest IPs in the gaming industry, like Halo and Gears of War, and they have always deserved to be experienced on a handheld device. I am sure many others have asked the same question. Little did we know that Redmond might have been quietly planning its foray into the handheld space.

EN→DEThe ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X is not just an update; it’s a redemption. It takes the promising but flawed concept of the original Ally and refines it into the handheld PC gaming device that users wanted all along. By directly addressing the biggest pain points (most notably the battery life), and layering on meaningful hardware and software improvements, ASUS and Microsoft have crafted what is the most powerful and versatile handheld on the market today. This is a machine that feels less like a first-generation experiment and more like a mature, confident, and incredibly capable product. It is a superb piece of engineering that delivers a true, no-compromise PC gaming experience in the palm of your hands. Ally X launches at a starting price of $999 in the U.S. – significantly higher than most competing devices. It’s a powerful computer in a compact chassis, and the premium is aimed squarely at enthusiasts.

EN→DEAsus has teamed up with Microsoft for something quite different this time. The new ROG Xbox Ally series takes the company’s handheld gaming concept and gives it a console-first twist. I’ve been using the standard model for about a week, powered by the AMD Ryzen Z2 A chip with 512GB storage and 16GB RAM. What truly sets it apart from the original ROG Ally isn’t the hardware, but the Xbox console interface running over Windows 11. At the India launch event, Asus described it as “an Xbox made by ROG.” Having spent time with both the Xbox Series S and the first-generation Ally, I’m curious to see how true that claim really is. EN→DEWhen the ROG Ally first debuted two years ago, it was a promising PC gaming handheld console. The idea of playing PC games anywhere and anytime is great, but it was met with two major flaws: The battery life and an unoptimised Windows 11 user interface for handheld (also not forgetting the microSD card issue). Over time, ASUS ROG improved the battery life with the Ally X, but the UI is still very Windows-ish. The newest successor, called the ROG Xbox Ally series (instead of the ROG Ally 2), has finally arrived. Although I only had a week of playing the Xbox Ally X, I can safely say that ASUS ROG has finally brought its 'A' game. In fact, the Xbox Ally X is probably the best PC gaming handheld console we can now get in Malaysia.

Powered by the new AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, the performance is stellar for a handheld device like this yet it offers more performance per watt while being cooler and the fans are much quieter than before too. As for the price, which is a huge point of contention, it is at $999.99 USD. However, for us here in Malaysia, it’s actually the same price as the ROG Ally X that was launched last year, at RM4,299. So, is it expensive? I’d say not really. We can still do everything that we want to do on a laptop since it’s essentially a laptop in the form of a controller with a screen in the middle. We can still convert it back to a laptop by plugging in a dongle, or get the ROG Bulwark Dock and use it that way too.

I took it everywhere I went for the last couple of days, and it’s the first handheld I genuinely considered buying for myself. Until I saw the price tag, that is. At a whopping $999, the console is anything but cheap. And that price tag carries certain expectations. One of those expectations would be the inclusion of a proper carry case. However, if you want one, be prepared to spend an additional $70, bringing the total price to almost $1.100. At that price, you can also get a very solid gaming laptop equipped with a dedicated graphics card and a high-end processor. It’s still not the easiest handheld to live with, but it’s the one that makes the Windows handheld dream feel believable to me – powerful, portable, and finally, practical. But let’s be honest: not everyone needs a handheld like this. The Xbox Ally X isn’t aiming to replace your Switch 2 or your console at home. It’s for a different kind of player – someone who already lives in the PC ecosystem, has a Steam or Game Pass library full of half-finished titles, and likes the idea of picking them up on the go without starting over. It’s for the gamer who doesn’t mind the occasional driver update or Windows quirk if it means having full control over what they play and how they play it.

Plus, it isn't as expensive as some of the other premium current-gen Windows handhelds.Microsoft’s updated Windows experience lays the groundwork for better handheld usability, but it still needs refinement, ideally toward feeling more console-like. Hall effect joysticks and a bigger battery would also help, though battery limits remain a general tech constraint.

EN→DEThe ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X lands on shelves on Thursday 16th October for R18 999. Given that the ASUS ROG Ally X retails for R17 999 and features a Z1 Extreme CPU (no AI) the R1 000 extra is arguably worth it for the arguably marginal performance bump of the newer chipset. The textured grips are really nice, as is the jet black colourway that is exclusive to the X iteration of the Xbox Ally. The hardware is great, the performance is what we’d expect from a handheld PC and frankly ASUS has done a bang-up job with its own software. But Microsoft lets the team down on this project. Windows still works but we really would have liked to have seen the Redmond colossus offering up more than the X logo here and crafted something special for the first handheld bearing its name.Frankly, it looks like Microsoft phoned it’s participation on this project in.ASUS though, stellar job folks.

EN→DEDespite its Xbox branding and more approachable design, the ROG Xbox Ally X doesn't quite do enough to attract a wider audience than any handheld gaming PC before it. That's not to say that was even an achievable goal for Asus and Xbox, but for as exciting as this device can be in ideal circumstances, its software continues to hold it back. The Xbox full screen experience is a significant step in the right direction, but Windows 11 just doesn't run smoothly on a portable touchscreen device. Certainly not this one – not yet, anyway. Of course, anyone willing to ignore or circumvent those inherent problems will be rewarded with an extraordinarily powerful gaming rig. There's not going to be much you can throw at the Xbox Ally X that it can't handle, provided you're willing to tone down the graphics settings every once in a while.

EN→DEAt around ₹1,15,000, the ROG Xbox Ally X is a luxury gadget that has nailed the concept of portable PC gaming. For those who can afford it, this is a superb fusion of console simplicity and PC power – a handheld that truly feels like an Xbox you can carry anywhere.

EN→DEThere's no getting around it--the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X mostly succeeds because it is a ROG Ally X, and that device was fantastic. This one is also fantastic. If you were considering that device, you don't mind (or prefer) the extra handgrips, and you have the extra $200, then this is the one to go for. It's pretty much that simple. Of course, that's a lot of conditionals. Plainly speaking, the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme doesn't particularly impress versus its predecessor. As we said earlier in the review, if you were hoping for a big performance uplift due to the 33% larger GPU, well it's just not there. Some games do actually benefit pretty significantly, and if you take into account the gains from playing in the Xbox Full Screen Experience, then this machine can be as much as 40% faster than the original ROG Ally X.

The power packed into this portable gamer is pretty impressive. Even on the basic Silent mode, you can happily play Diablo 4 on Ultra graphics settings, while the likes of Tony Hawk also runs well. Boost the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X to the Performance or Turbo modes and AAA PC titles like Indiana Jones are more than playable, even on higher graphics settings. Even better is the battery life, which ranks among the best of any handheld gaming console I've tested in 2025. The Xbox ROG Ally X supplies three to four hours of non-stop game action on one charge, even on Performance and 25w Ultra modes. That's better than I experienced on the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch 2 (when playing AAA games). And while you don't have an OLED panel, games still look great on the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X.

EN→DEPortability has become increasingly important in recent times. The sales success of the Nintendo Switch meant both Microsoft and Sony rushed to develop their own. The PlayStation Portal was Sonys version. We all eagerly anticipated the Xbox one, especially as rumours were that it would be a full on handheld. The reveal back in June certainly gave us pause. Not so much a portable Xbox, instead it was more akin to a Steamdeck. A portable PC. Being produced by ASUS Republic of Gamers brand had us fearing for our wallets. Whilst it is hardly priced at the everyman there is so much flexibility and quality hardware in the ROG Xbox Ally that if you want what it offers, nothing else comes close. We worried when we first saw it that it was going to be locked to the Xbox infrastructure.

EN→DEIt’s also worth mentioning that Asus sells a $149 product called the Bulwark Dock, which lets you plug in a variety of devices, including the Xbox Ally X, to monitors, TVs and other peripherals. With 7-in-1 connectivity, you can plug in laptops, phones and other handhelds. It’s also got a stand for your device and an anti-slip rubber base. I tried it with the Ally X and it worked well, if not entirely suited for my personal setup. (I don’t yet have a proper desk and primarily use an already full entertainment stand.) Really, it’s a pretty solid investment if you’re someone who games with any portable device, even if you don’t end up going with the Ally X.

EN→DEWhile the ROG Xbox Ally X lays the groundwork for a bright Windows 11 gaming handheld future, it makes me wonder where Xbox is headed. Is this the precursor to a Microsoft-made handheld that's actually just the next Xbox? Is the Xbox layer over Windows 11 the start of the Xbox-PC merger that's been rumored for years? It's still unclear, but the release of the Xbox Ally X feels like the start of a new direction for Microsoft and the Xbox brand. At launch, the Xbox Ally X experience is far from perfect, making its $1,000 USD ($1,300 CAD) price tag difficult to justify. There are just too many features that lack refinement, like the disconnect between the new Xbox menu and Armoury Crate, the fact that some third-party games don't appear in your Xbox library (EA's app, I'm looking at you), and that updates need to be downloaded through several different apps, both in Xbox and desktop mode.

EN→DEThe ROG Xbox Ally X is a team up between Asus and Xbox that took people by surprise, but don't think this is a portable version of the Xbox console - it's a Windows 11-powered gaming handheld PC, and despite some innovative hardware and software choices, it still offers a lot of the pros and cons previous, sometimes much cheaper, gaming PC handhelds come with.

EN→DEIf last year’s ROG Ally felt like an experiment, the Xbox Ally X is the version that finally sticks the landing.

It’s not only the first Xbox handheld, but it’s the first gaming handheld that doesn’t feel or perform like a cumbersome PC. This is the first Xbox handheld that comes running a streamlined version of Windows 11 with fewer background processes. Its unique Xbox UI also almost completely eliminates having to deal with the desktop experience with frustratingly tiny touchscreen icons. With this, you could also install another OS, such as Bazzite, although by doing so, you’d lose out on all the Xbox-first software stuff that this handheld is arguably built around.

EN→DEFinally, should you buy the ROG Xbox Ally? Well, it depends on you. I’d say the ROG Xbox Ally is a great entry point to the world of handheld PC gaming. It’s a mostly hassle-free experience thanks to the Xbox Full Screen Experience, though we can still change back to the traditional desktop mode to tinker around some more if we want to. If you already own the ROG Ally with the Z1 like I have, then the upgrades are mostly in the grip comfort and quality of life features like having another USB-C port, a larger battery, and also a microSD card reader that wouldn’t burn. At the price of RM2,699, I think it’s a good device – especially if you play some not-so-demanding games like… let’s say metroidvanias like Ender Lilies or Ender Magnolia, or platformers like Yooka-Replayee. It’s definitely a much better and more affordable option to play PC games compared to emulating them on a phone – that’s for sure.

EN→DEAt Rs 69,990, the ROG Xbox Ally brings noticeable upgrades over the original Ally — most importantly in comfort, cooling, and battery life. The redesigned grip handles make longer sessions far more pleasant, heat stays away from your palms, and the bigger 60Wh battery finally delivers respectable endurance for a handheld gaming console. There’s a mild bump in performance too, though you’ll mostly notice it in select titles rather than across the board. The real highlight, though, is the new Xbox interface. It gives the Ally a console-like experience while still retaining the flexibility of Windows — meaning you can still mod games, install third-party launchers, or switch to desktop mode whenever needed. That said, the software isn’t fully polished yet. Integration with platforms like Steam and EA Play feels inconsistent, and occasional bugs remind you that this hybrid UI is still evolving.

EN→DEI'm not sure the ROG Xbox Ally is going to convince anyone of much – which isn't to say that it's worthless, by any stretch. Indeed, it's a great little handheld gaming PC, albeit there are other better-value options out there (and the market won't be able to escape the looming shadow of the Switch 2, either). Performance is solid, ergonomics are surprisingly good, and the Xbox software wrapper is also an actual success. However, the experience still has rough edges that make the Xbox Ally feel like the first thrust in a slightly haphazard experiment from Xbox. If you're interested and can afford the outlay, however, then it does largely what it says on the tin.

EN→DEThe ROG Xbox Ally succeeds by focusing on what gamers want most in a handheld gaming device—and by adding just enough Xbox integration to sweeten the deal. Comfortable ergonomics, a bright and responsive display, flexible performance options and software that stays out of the way all come together to create an experience that feels polished and purposeful. It doesn’t try to do everything—but what it does, it does exceptionally well. For anyone looking to play PC games on the go without giving up the console-like ease of the Xbox interface, this device delivers exactly what it promises.

EN→DEI’ll be honest with you, after seeing the $1,000 price tag on the ROG Xbox Ally X, I was really rooting for the Ally to be the real value buster here — the Series S of handhelds that just ticked all the right boxes at a lower price. But then, the cold, hard reality hit, and what we’re left with is a $600 system that should cost $400 based on its performance. That’s a crying shame because the Ally itself is an OK handheld, which I would’ve had a better impression of if it were more affordable. Alas, this just feels like the base model companies make so they can say “from *INSERT LOWER PRICE HERE*” and not have to say the big number. But even at that level, this is still a big number, and you can get similar or better price-to-performance for cheaper.

EN→DEThe ROG Xbox Ally is a modest handheld that offers performance that's more on the level of the Steam Deck, making it one of the most direct competitors to Valve's device. Ergonomic grips, a relatively low cost, silent fans, and a good 7-inch IPS display are all attractive features. However, its modest performance and low storage capacity will not suit everyone's needs. If you're looking for a Windows handheld that's ideal for cloud gaming or running simpler graphics games locally, then this could be a good fit for you.

EN→DEThe ASUS and Xbox partnership on this new range of handhelds can be considered a curious release, especially as most of what the ROG Xbox Ally offers can be found in previous ASUS ROG Ally models, as well as their Steam Deck competitors, only without the Xbox integration. With recent price rises for Game Pass, a focus on flagship games releasing on other platforms and reports of retailers moving away from stocking Xbox hardware, the timing of the ROG Xbox Ally release seems questionable. It doesn't take away from my overall good impressions of my hands-on experience with the system, but it's difficult to not see potential customers taking recent Microsoft business decisions into account when weighing up handheld options.

EN→DEThe ROG Xbox Ally is pricey. The handheld is priced at Rs 69,990, which is more than traditional consoles. However, the Ally is not trying to be a traditional console. It is a device targeted at a niche market, casual gamers who don’t have the time to sit and play on a traditional console or PC. EN→DEOverall, I really like the Xbox Ally. The hardware is very good, it’s extremely comfortable even in longer playing sessions, and the battery life is decent (depending on what games you play). However, some of what makes the Xbox Ally special won’t be exclusive forever. Other handhelds will likely ship with AMD’s solid Ryzen Z2 A chip, and the Xbox software experience should eventually come to all handhelds and PCs. The ultimate question, of course, is whether you should buy the Xbox Ally. At $799, it’s a steep price, especially for a product that frankly doesn’t do anything unique. There are a ton of solutions for portable gaming, including other handhelds that cost less (the Steam Deck and, laughably, the also very expensive Switch 2).

EN→DEMicrosoft finally getting on board the PC gaming handheld train in an official capacity is great news, and the Xbox ROG Ally is a strong start. Behind-the-scenes work has finally stopped Windows from feeling like a lead weight, and the full-screen Xbox interface is a massive improvement over what we had before. On the hardware front, the controller-like grips also make a massive difference to comfort and playability. I don’t think any of that means all of the Xbox faithful should rush out to buy one, though. The base model Ally can’t match the cheaper Steam Deck OLED for performance muscle, and it doesn’t last as long per charge. Valve’s machine has a superior OLED screen, too.
