Auf seiner Homepage ordnet Dell das XPS M2010 in die Sparte „Notebooks“ ein: Besser würde vielleicht der Begriff „mobile Home-Cinema-Anlage“ für das 8,2 Kilogramm schwere Ungetüm mit 20-Zoll-Display passen – zumal das XPS M2010 gleich einen Tragegriff mitbringt. Für designorientierte Multimediafreunde mit Hang zu Statussymbolen ist das XPS M2010 ein Traum. Auch für beengte Wohnverhältnisse bietet sich Dells Multimedia-Schrank an, da man ihn im Gegensatz zu Fernseher, Verstärker und DVD-Player zusammenklappen und platzsparend verstauen kann – fraglich allerdings, ob der XPS M2010 auch die Preisvorstellungen dieser Zielgruppe trifft.

Dells XPS M2010 ist ein wirklich ausgefallenes Notebook. Mit traditionellen Geräten will es nicht konkurrieren: Es lässt sich am besten als tragbarer Desktop-PC beschreiben. Und dieses originelle Konzept wurde hervorragend umgesetzt. Als Dell das Konzept des XPS M2010 auf der CES 2006 vorstellte, erwartete kaum jemand, die Marktreife dieses Geräts zu erleben. Ein 20-Zoll-Notebook mit einem Gewicht über 8 Kilo und abnehmbarer Tastatur, das konnte man nicht ernst nehmen. When you think of innovation, Dell isn’t the first company you’re likely to think of. After all, it’s built its business on being aggressive in established markets rather than exploring new ones. Which makes the Dell XPS M2010 even more of a curiosity. Not only is Dell breaking new ground with a completely new take on the notebook form fact it’s also the first machine we’ve seen with a 20-inch screen. (Out of interest, Acer is the only other company at the moment to offer this panel size, on the Aspire 7000 series.) Quality of the 20-inch Super-TFT screen is excellent, and displays at a WSXGA+ resolution of 1680 x 1050 pixels. Is there any bad news involved here? Well, you’ll find that the asking price for this piece of innovation is £2299 (inc. VAT). Not exactly within most people’s price range but then again this isn’t a machine to suit everyone. If you need a desktop PC in a semi-mobile form factor, this is the height of style and so unique, you’re likely to be the only person in the neighbourhood with one.

This leather-bound hinge also acts as a sturdy handle for carrying the laptop. On first inspection, the big machine resembles a full-fledged desktop, yet it closes gracefully and can be carried like a huge clamshell laptop (with a handle). The one caveat: it’s too pricey for most mere mortals. Nevertheless, the XPS M2010 will be regarded by most as a dream machine. And as an added bonus, the system’s 12-cell, 112-Wh battery should last a little over 3 hours. Amazing!

Despite being the largest and one of the most profitable computer manufacturers worldwide, Dell does not have the charisma of an Apple, the blue-blooded reputation of IBM or the glamour of Sony. What it does offer to consumers are attractive all-year-round discounts due to the lower costs sustained by its direct sales model and excellent supply chain management. Judging from its success, this business model works but Dell just does not inspire the same kind of brand loyalty that Apple or Sony can. The company's recent acquisition of enthusiast oriented PC boutique firm - Alienware -may be a sign that Dell is aware of its relatively bland image and aims to broaden its appeal to this niche.

Every once in a while I get a notebook that blows me away with its visionary concept and bold design. Grand in every sense of the word, the Dell XPS M2010 ($4,675 direct) is just such a system. On first inspection, the big machine resembles a full-fledged desktop, yet it closes gracefully and can be carried like a huge clamshell notebook (with a handle). The one caveat: It's too pricey for most mere mortals. As a laptop expert, I applaud the genius it takes to fit a powerful PC into a small 3.5-pound chassis. So you can imagine my reaction when this 18.1-pound behemoth with a 20.1-inch widescreen landed on my bench. The closest thing that comes to mind is the old Acer Aspire 1712, a transportable that used a desktop LCD and weighed 14 pounds.

With the XPS M2010, Dell has forgotten completely why laptops were invented in the first place. And that's a good thing--or at least an interesting thing. The company has packed an impressive multimedia experience into a form factor that's far more portable and self-contained than any other desktop PC's and considerably less compromised than that of other laptops that make do with smaller displays, cramped keyboards, and minimized feature sets. Unfortunately, with a base price of $3,500, the XPS M2010 is also about as expensive as a semester at a state college; the target market here is clearly those for whom money is no object.

Das Design des XPS M1210 wirkt protzig und wiederspiegelt die enorme Kraft, die sich im Inneren entfalten kann. Gleichzeitig ist es sehr schön und hinterlässt einen derart guten Eindruck, dass man dieses Subnotebook gar nicht mehr zurückgeben will. Und auch die Verarbeitung ist einfach vorbildlich. An der Grundausstattung hat Dell auch nicht gespart: viele Audio-Anschlüsse, ein Multimediaausgang und vier USB Ports, sowie ein Card Reader findet man selten auf Subnotebooks. Erweitert werden kann der XPS auch äußerst gut: das WLan kann jederzeit umgetauscht werden und ist bereits im Mini-PCI-E Format, dazu gibt es auch noch ein WWAN Slot für Wimax, UMTC oder HSDAP Karten. Und dann ist sogar noch ein SIM-Karten Slot vorhanden, womit auch Businesskunden auf ihren Bedarf einer "Jederzeit-Konnektivität" kommen.

Es ist mein erstes Notebook und somit kann ich wenige Vergleiche zu anderen Notebooks ziehen. Aber im großen und ganzen finde ich ist es ein gelungenes Notebook für Leute die nicht gerne ein so großes Notebook mit sich rumschleppen. Einhergehend mit der Baugrößeist die Schrift auf dem Bildschirm natürlich sehr klein was für Leute mit Sehschwäche auf Dauer möglicherweise Probleme machen könnte. Im Moment scheint bei mir allerdings in diesem Bezug noch alles im Lot zu sein. Leider hat es ein spiegelndes Display und während ich hier schreibe macht sich das Hängenbleiben an den Tasten allerdings sehr oft bemerkbar. Es ist gerade so als würde ich beim herunter drücken einer Taste mit meinem Finger unter eine andere benachbarte kommen und kurz an ihr hängen bleiben. Also an der Tastatur darf Dell nochmal arbeiten. Nicht aber am Service.

Der Test hat letztendlich bestätigt was die technischen Daten des Gerätes vermuten haben lassen. Das Dell XPS M1210 ist ein kleines Kraftpaket, das selbst vor anspruchsvolleren Games nicht zurückschreckt. Um nicht ganz in Euphorie zu versinken ist aber doch anzumerken, dass zwischen einer GeForce 7400 und einer GeForce 7600 noch immer ein großer Leistungsunterschied ist, den auch das freche kleine Dell XPS nicht wettmachen kann. Dennoch, das Gerät kann bezüglich Geräteaufbau und Verarbeitung auf der ganzen Linie überzeugen. Gutes Design und hochwertige Materialien runden das Bild ab.

Dell bezeichnet das in allen UMTS-Notebooks zum Einsatz kommende HSDPA-Modem Novatel Expedite EU740 als Wireless 5505; dieser Mobilfunkadapter lieferte im Test die besten Ergebnisse. Dell legt Novatels Mobilink-Software zur Einwahl bei, versieht sie aber mit eigenem Namen und einer Oberfläche, bei der ein Logo des Vertragspartners Vodafone die Hälfte des Fensters einnimmt.

While it's not for hard-core gamers, those who need above-average performance in a compact system won't mind paying a premium for this unique road-worthy hybrid. The 12.1-inch wide-screen display leads us to call the M1210 an ultraportable laptop, but its 4.9-pound weight (5.2 pounds with the AC adapter) is closer to a laptop in the thin-and-light category, such as the Sony VAIO C150. Measuring 11.7 inches wide by 8.7 inches deep by 1.2 inches high, it's slightly bulkier than your average ultraportable, but still well suited for a daily commute.

The XPS M1210 is a fast, flexible machine that lives up to the size, weight, and battery life requirements of a true ultraportable laptop computer. It's also stylish, well built, and has the best keyboard and touchpad combination of any laptop I've ever used. It's a premium product, and as you might expect, it comes at a premium price. I configured an M1210 at Dell's website more or less as we tested it, and the total rang up to a dizzying $2,238—and ours is missing options like Bluetooth, Nvidia graphics, and a mobile broadband card! Once you've picked your jaw up off the floor, realize that much of that price tag is CPU. The top two speed grades of the mobile Core 2 Duo command a healthy markup. I was able to drop the price by $425 simply by moving down to a Core 2 Duo T7200 with a 2GHz clock speed and 4MB of L2 cache. That alone takes the total down to $1,813. If you're willing to compromise more on features and performance, you can drive the price down even further.

The Dell XPS M1210 is the smallest notebook in Dell’s high-performance XPS line. With the discontinuation of the 710M, the M1210 is also the only 12.1” consumer notebook that Dell offers. The M1210 is a compact multimedia machine with remarkable power for its small size. Of course, the price reflects this above-average performance. This laptop is far and away the current best value for its size and power. It boasts the most powerful GPU and CPU available for the ultraportable family combined with great features like the integrated webcam and microphone, MediaDirect, dual headphone jacks, Wi-Fi Catcher, and more. I am extremely happy with my purchase. However, in the future I would like to see Dell improve the speaker quality and possibly change the material used on the lid so it does not attract quite so many fingerprints.

When you think of Dell's XPS family you automatically think of big, powerful desktops or equally big gaming laptops, but the XPS M1210 bucks this trend by being a small, seemingly ultra-portable machine. But it's a bulky little devil weighing in at 2.65kg, so not quite the ultra-portable it appears, but then again that's with the 9-cell battery (you can opt for the smaller, lighter, 6-cell battery option) and the AC adapter. Stylishly finished in silver and black, with apparently good build quality, the XPS M1210 looks unlike any other Dell laptop currently available, certainly not as brash as its big brother, the XPS M1710. Although the XPS M1210 isn't as svelte as most of the 12.1-inch screen notebooks on the market, it is one of the most powerful and useable, if a little pricey.

Although bigger for an ultraportable, the Dell XPS M1210 is packed with so many features that the ultraportables usually don't have. A nice array of ports and connections, an optical drive and a long lasting battery life. Although branded as a multimedia machine, the loudspeakers will leave a bitter taste in your mouth and Dell could have mounted something better on this machine. The touchpad and the mouse buttons are a little bit cramped but this was expected from a laptop this size. The overall performance of the Dell XPS M1210 is astounding and we award the machine with an 8.5 for the design and a9 for the tech specs.

I've had just a ton of fun with the M1210. I get to play with a lot of notebooks with the work I do, and believe it or not that can actually get tedious when you see one laptop after the other that's just kind of the same. The M1210 is different though, it's a 12.1" laptop that's designed to be powerful and fun. You can game on it, comfortably watch and listen to movies on it, use it to record video, be highly mobile and connected with the EVDO option and to top it all off the look is really great. I love the black lid and blue accent lights.

It is a rare and exciting experience—at least for me—to bring an ultraportable on a business flight, let alone one as travel-friendly as the Dell XPS M1210 ($2641direct, as tested). Luckily, I just happened to have a trip planned the same time the M1210 came into PC Magazine Labs. The M1210 is light enough to carry around comfortably and powerful enough to get all my work done. Even with a nine-cell 84-Wh battery, the unit weighs a mere 5 pounds. (The AC adapter adds another 0.8 pounds.) You can opt for the six-cell battery and bring the unit's weight down to 4.2 pounds, but with discrete graphics and the power it consumes, I highly recommend going with the extended cell.

It's difficult to know what to make of the Dell XPS M1210. On the one hand, its 12.1-inch wide-screen display is characteristic of an ultraportable laptop, such as the Gateway NX100X. On the other hand, its 4.4-pound starting weight places it in line with thin-and-lights that have larger displays, such as the 13.3-inch Sony VAIO SZ or the 14.1-inch Fujitsu LifeBook S7110. Like the Lenovo 3000 V100, the XPS M1210 offers a feature set that's a cut above that of most ultraportables, which usually sacrifice some features for portability. Though our test unit includes upgrades that more than double the price, at its $1,300 starting price, the M1210 will appeal to everyday users who want a relatively light and compact but still full-featured Media Center computer.

Mit dem XPS M1710 liefert Dell ein extrem leistungsfähiges Gamer- und Multimedia-Notebook. Das außergewöhnliche Design mit konfigurierbaren farbigen Leuchteffekten soll keineswegs über technische Schwächen hinweg täuschen. Wer bunte Licher am Notebook nicht mag, kann die LEDs auch abschalten. Bei den 3D- und System-Leistungswerten platzierte sich das XPS M1710 problemlos im vorderen Bereich und setzte sogar an einigen Stellen neue Bestmarken. Mit 512 MB Grafikspeicher, flotter Notebook-Grafikkarte (Nvidia GeForce Go 7950 GTX), 2,16 GHz Dual Core2 Prozessor und 2 GB RAM sollten auch anspruchsvollere Spiele vernünftig laufen. Display und Tastatur genügen höheren Qualitätsansprüchen.

Unser Fazit - Dell lügt nicht - das XPS M1710 ist ein gutes Spiele-Notebook. Die Leistungsdaten und der gute Bildschirm ermöglichen ein angenehmes Spielevergnügen. Die gute Schnittstellenausstattung und Eingabegeräte tragen zusätzlich zum guten Eindruck bei. Mobil kann man das kleine Monster von Dell jedoch nicht mehr wirklich bezeichnen. Eine Benutzung am Schoß ist wegen der Grösse und des Gewichts nicht wirklich angenehm und auch möchte man es nicht dauernd dabei haben. Wer jedoch einen Ersatz für seinen Desktop in "Autotuner" Optik sucht, wird beim Dell XPS M1710 wahrscheinlich einen passenden Partner finden.

Wer ein gutes Notebook zum Spielen sucht, macht mit Dells XPS M1710 in der von uns getesteten Ausstattung keinen Fehler. Lediglich das „klobige“ Design könnte den ein oder anderen stören; aber auch die anderen auf dem Markt befindlichen Gaming-Notebooks mit vergleichbarer Ausstattung würden keinen Design-Preis gewinnen. Der eingesetzte Core-Duo-Prozessor zeigt wieder einmal eindrucksvoll, dass sich Stromsparen und hohe Leistung nicht ausschließen müssen. Wir warten schon gespannt auf den Nachfolger des aktuellen Mobil-Prozessors, der noch in diesem Jahr erscheinen dürfte. Mit derartiger Rechenpower steht dem normalen Arbeiten am Notebook nichts im Wege.

Don't buy extra warrenty, dell is crap for support. They are based in inida for support and you can't understand them. Also when I rang them up with a problem with my media direct, they made me download the wrong software which did not work at all. The support is rubbish and also our paying for it. i think it was a 0800 number, this costs.

Let's not forget the multicolored lights built into the speaker grilles, air vents, and lid, which play along with music apps and select games (Dell calls it XPS LightFX technology). The $3,498 system is a budget-buster to be sure, but one that's hard to top if you're looking for a top-of-the-line desktop replacement for gaming. In terms of design, not much has changed, but this time around Dell gave this 8.8-pound gaming rig a faster, more powerful processor and is now offering it with an 802.11n wireless network adapter and a wireless-N router bundle that is sure to make a big splash at your next LAN party. Unfortunately, only those with the deepest pockets will be able to afford this $3,783 powerhouse. We received the Special Edition Formula Red model, but you can order the XPS with the more subtle Metallic Black shell. The shiny, silver-and-red lid sports a Dell logo in its center, and the two XPS logos on either side of the lid are accented by red backlighting, as are the fans and speaker grills.

Every so often a piece of kit comes along that just blows you away. We've seen Dell's Inspiron XPS laptops before and they've been impressive. The latest, the M1710, really is something else. The design won't be to everyone's taste - we'd have preferred fewer red lights on the sides of the chassis – but will doubtless appeal to many. The keyboard layout is neat: none of the keys have been squashed, and there's plenty of room to rest your wrists. The Inspiron M1710 is a cracking laptop with top-notch components, although the design might not suit everyone. It's faster than anything we've seen, so if you want a desktop replacement with serious power, look no further. However, you'll have to have deep pockets.

The Dell XPS M1710 clearly runs the Merom T7400 without much problem. It boots fine, and there was no system instability I encountered during testing. So it looks promising that the M1710 will be able to take the new Core 2 Duos, hopefully with just a BIOS flash. Not every test showed an improvement where improvements were seen previously on the Asus Z96JS. This all indicates the need of an update on the XPS M1710 as some tests even showed a decrease in performance. Finally, and probably the most important for XPS M1710 owners, there was a significant increase in game performance when going from the factory installed T2600 to the Core 2 Duo T7400 at lower resolutions. However, the differences between the two CPUs diminish as you increase the screen resolution. Since the XPS M1710 is capable of high resolution gaming, I don't see the point in upgrading a CPU solely for playing games.

It's certainly the fastest we've tested, but, we don't think it's the fastest ever. We're anxious to test notebooks with SLI-based graphics solutions, such as those from Widow PC and Eurocom. Based on our findings with desktop SLI cards, we would expect that SLI will add 30% to gaming performance and 60% higher resolutions, but that remains to be seen. The good news is that our rant about gaming notebook vendors resulted in a great reaction from a few vendors. We'll soon be receiving evaluation models of some of their high end notebooks with dual core AMD processors and SLI capability. We can't wait.

Cool but perhaps not stylish, the Dell XPS 15z is a premium model with some great hits and a few misses. Battery life saw the system survive for a hair under four hours with Wi-Fi on and web-centric actual use. Not terrible, but considering some of the all-day results we've been seeing from some units these days, it's behind the curve a little.

Its speed and battery scores lived up to expectation, but more importantly, you pay significantly less than what you would for the MacBook Pro 15-inch.

Dell: Dell ist ein 1984 gegründeter US-amerikanischer Hersteller (Sitz Texas) von Computer-Hardware und gehört zu den grössten internationalen Herstellern sowohl in Bezug auf Marktanteile als auch hinsichtlich Notebook-Modellen. Die Produktpalette umfasst unter anderem Desktops, Notebooks, Speichersysteme, Monitore, Server, Drucker, Unterhaltungselektronik und Peripheriegeräte. Dell bietet Laptops an, die ich für verschiedene Einsatzbereiche eignen, z. B. Business-Laptops, Gaming-Laptops, Ultra-Portables und Workstations. Die Business-Notebooks von Dell aus den Latitude- und Precision-Serien sind eine Option für professionelle Anwender und Unternehmen.

2023 hatte Dell einen ungefähren Marktanteil von 17% am weltweiten PC-Absatz und war damit die Nummer 3 nach Lenovo und HP.

Für Gaming-Enthusiasten ist die Marke Alienware von Dell für Gaming-Notebooks vorgesehen.

Diese Karten können nur sehr alte und sehr anspruchslose 3D Spiele flüssig darstellen.  Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung oder (SD) Videoschnitt sind jedoch ohne große Einschränkungen möglich.

ATI Mobility Radeon X1800: Grafikkarte für 17" DTR Notebooks und guten Leistungsdaten, jedoch höherem Stromverbrauch als die schnellere NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900GS.

NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400: Untere Mittelklasse Grafikkarte von NVIDIA, die jedoch langsamer ist als die Konkurrenzkarte X1400 von ATI. Die Karte ist durch den 64 Bit (bzw. sogar teilweise nur 32 Bit) breiten Speicherbus nur für anspruchslose Spiele geeignet.

Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.

NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GTX: Vorgänger der 7950er Grafikkarte und bei den technischen Daten bis auf geringere Taktung (und dadurch auch geringere Spieleleistung) und höheren Stromverbrauch identisch. Die DirectX 9 Spieleleistung ist jedoch immer noch mit sehr gut zu bewerten.

NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS: DirectX 9 Grafikkarte für große 17" Notebooks mit (für DTR Grafikkarten) relativ geringem Stromverbrauch und trotzdem sehr guten Leistungsdaten. Im Vergleich zum Nachfolger 8700M GT bietet die 7900 GS noch einen 256 Bit Speicherbus.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M: Basiert auf die GeForce GT 425M mit leicht erhöhten Taktraten.

Intel Core Duo: Doppelkernprozessor mit einem sehr guten Leistungs- zu Stromverbrauchsverhältnis. Die maximale Leistungsaufnahme von 31 Watt ist nur 4 Watt mehr als beim Pentium M (Vorgänger). Beide Kerne werden automatisch und unabhängig von einander per Speedstep bis auf 1 GHz abgesenkt. Außerdem unterstützt er nun auch SSE3 Befehle.

Nach ersten Benchmarks absolviert der Core Duo alle Tests mindestens genauso schnell wie ein gleichgetakteter Pentium M. Bei Anwendungen die für Multiprozessoren geplant wurden, kann die Performance fast doppelt so schnell ausfallen als beim Pentium M (z.B. CineBench um 86% schneller)

T2600: Zweitschnellster Core Duo welcher noch keinen 64 Bit Support bietet. Später von günstigen Merom und Penryn basierten Core 2 Duo abgelöst.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Core Duo Nachfolger mit längerer Pipeline und 5-20% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs bei 0.5 - 3 Watt mehr Stromverbrauch.

Der Notebook Core 2 Duo ist baugleich mit den Desktop Core 2 Duo Prozessoren, jedoch werden die Notebook-Prozessoren mit niedrigeren Spannungen und geringerem Frontsidebus Takt betrieben. Von der Leistung bleiben gleichgetaktete Notebooks deswegen (und auch wegen der langsameren Festplatten) 20-25% hinter Desktop PCs.

T7200: Auf den Merom Kern basierender Doppelkernprozessor. Zur Zeit des Erscheinens in der Mittelklasse einzuordnen.

Intel Core i7:

2620M: Auf Sandy Brige Architektur basierender sehr schneller Doppelkernprozessor (2,7 - 3,4GHz) mit integrierter Grafikkarte und integriertem DDR3 Speicherkontroller.

17.00: Diese Displaygrösse ist ein Standardformat für Desktop-Replacements. Die DTR-Laptops sind schwerer zu tragen, brauchen mehr Strom, dafür sind Texte leicht lesbar und hohe Auflösungen kein Problem. DTR sind hauptsächlich für stationären Schreibtischeinsatz vorgesehen, wo Gewicht und Energiehunger egal sind. Dafür genießt man die Vorzüge hoher Auflösungen (mehr Details, besser lesbar).

Most smartphones and only a few tablets fall into this weight category. Only a few smartphones are heavier and should rather be considered tablets.

This weight range is typical for laptops and the middle ground between portability, passable screen size and performance.

81.21%: Diese Bewertung ist leicht überdurchschnittlich, es gibt etwas mehr Geräte mit schlechteren Beurteilungen. Klare Kaufempfehlungen sehen aber anders aus.
