Bei der Ausstattung zeigt sich Alienware knauserig und liefert trotz des hohen Preises nur eine Baseball- Cap sowie ein kleines Mauspad mit – das macht Asus beim G60VX deutlich besser. Auch bei der Lautstärke zieht das außerirdische Notebook den Kürzeren, fangen die Lüfter unter Volllast doch deutlich an zu röhren. Außerdem eignet sich das M17X nur für Spieler ohne fettige Finger, denn die matte Beschichtung des Gehäuses zieht Fingerabdrücke geradezu magisch an. Bei der Tastatur setzt Alienware auf ein Standard-Layout inklusive abgesetztem Nummern-Block.

On the whole, the M17X is a great notebook to have if you want something that's purely built for entertainment - whether it's for watching movies or games. It is a pretty beefy machine with the muscles to handle the latest games and it has great sounding speakers to boot. Its powerful processor also allows it to multitask very well and run apps such as Photoshop with aplomb too. However, on the downside, it is very bulky making it more of a desktop replacement than a portable gaming notebook.

There's no doubting that the Alienware M17x is a striking piece of design and one that we actually came to like. It’s the best Alienware machine we’ve seen for ages in terms of looks and build quality, brilliantly combining the solidity of outdoor latrines with sci-fi set-design.

However, this isn't quite enough to distract from its main problem - the fact that, as a gaming laptop, it's firmly wedged between a rock and a hard place. Its bulk means that it's not suitable for transport and, if you spent two grand on a desktop machine instead, it’d be at least twice as powerful and certainly much more upgradable.

Over all I am very pleased with this laptop, It looks sleek, and performs like a desktop. The weight is going to be fun with all my travels, but thats a price I am ready to pay to have a Sweet gaming laptop. Price was $$$$ but no worse than a nicely configured Precision M6400, but the GPU options put this laptop ahead of anything else. upgrades to a QX9300 will be the next item on my list to do. When the 4 GB DIMMS drop to a more reasonable price, a 8 GB Config could be in the works.

The M17x has an effective cooling system that kept it cool during our testing, and we liked the AlienFX lighting system and different case color options. The switchable graphics are handy and equates to good battery life (2:15). Our biggest issue with this machine is the subpar screen, which is out of place on a machine of this caliber. Other than the screen we found it difficult to fault the M17x and give it our recommendation.

Auf der einen Seite nerven das hohe Gewicht, der, besonders unter Last, sehr hohe Geräuschpegel und die vielen kleineren sowie größeren Mängel respektive Fehler wie Abstürze im Akkubetrieb oder vereinzelte Grafikfehler im Crossfire. Auf der anderen Seite präsentiert sich das M17x in nahezu allen anderen Bereichen als referenzwürdig.

Alienware: Alienware wurde 1996 gegründet. Heute zählt das Unternehmen mit weltweit mehr als 500 Angestellten und einem Umsatz von mehr als 90 Millionen US-Dollar in 2003 zu den eher kleineren internationalen Anbietern von High-Performance Desktops, Notebooks und Workstations für Privat- und Geschäftskunden. Die europäische Niederlassung befindet sich in Irland. Alienware gehört seit 2006 gemeinsam mit Dell zum gleichen Konzern.

High-End Grafikkarten welche auch neueste und anspruchsvolle 3D Spiele in hohen Auflösungen und Detailstufen flüssig wiedergeben können. Durch den hohen Stromverbrauch, werden diese GPUs nur in großen und schweren Notebooks mit geringen Akkulaufzeiten angeboten.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M SLI: Zwei GeForce GTX 280M im SLI Verbund sind etwa 0-40% schneller als eine einzelne Karte (je nach Spieleunterstützung). Die einzelnen GTX 280M basieren auf dem G92b Chip mit vollen 128 Pipelines und sind daher mit der Desktop 9800 GTX+ (GTX 250) verwandt (nicht mit der GTX 280). Durch SLI Kombination gibt es weiters das Problem von Microrucklern.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2: Zwei Mobility Radeon HD 4870 im Crossfire Modus (bzw. X2). Je nach Spieleunterstützung und Einstellungen 0-80% höhere Leistung. Trotzdem doppelter Stromverbrauch.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870: High-End Grafikkarte mit DirectX 11 Support basierend auf die Desktop HD5770. Der 128 Bit Speicherbus ist nur mit (G)DDR3 ein Flaschenhals (deutlich geringere Performance). Mit GDDR5 Grafikspeicher ist die HD 5870 schneller als eine GTX 285M sein und daher schnellste Einkerngrafikkarte in Anfang 2010 für Notebooks.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M: High-End Grafikkarte basierend auf den GF106 Chip mit GDDR5 Unterstütztung. 

AMD Radeon HD 6970M: High-End Grafikkarte von AMD welche auf die Desktop 6850 basiert und dadurch UVD3 Videoprozessor und Eyefinity+ unterstützt.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M: High End Grafikkarte basierend auf den voll ausgebauten GF114 Chip und höheren Taktraten als die GTX 485M bei vergleichbarem Stromverbrauch.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M: Einsteigergrafikkarte basierend auf den GF119 Chip (Fermi Ableger) mit 64 Bit Speicheranbindung oder den GF108 mit 128 Bit aber geringeren Taktraten.

Intel Core 2 Extreme: Die höchstgetaktete CPU von Intels Core 2 Duo Serie wird als Core 2 Extreme (mit saftigem Aufpreis) verkauft. Als besonderheit wurde bei den Extreme Prozessoren der Übertaktungsschutz entfernt.

QX9300: Mobiler Quad-Core Prozessor ohne Übertaktungsschutz und mit einem TDP von 45 Watt nur für große und schwere Notebooks gedacht. Die Performance ist dank der 2.5 GHz auch bei single Threaded Anwendungen relativ gut.

Intel Core i7:

620M: Der Core i7-620M ist der schnellste Dual-Core Prozessor (im ersten Quartal 2010) von Intel und taktet dank Turbo von 2.66 - 3.33 GHz (je nach Auslastung). Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-766 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). Dadurch ist der gesamte TDP von 35 Watt nicht sehr hoch.

2630QM: Auf Sandy Brige Architektur basierender Quad-Core Prozessor (2-2.9 GHz) mit mit integrierter Intel HD Graphics 3000 Grafikkarte und integriertem DDR3 Speicherkontroller.

2820QM: Auf Sandy Brige Architektur basierender Quad-Core Prozessor mit mit integrierter Grafikkarte und integriertem DDR3 Speicherkontroller. Im Vergleich zum Core i7-2720QM etwas höher getaktet und mit deutlich größerem Level 3 Cache.

2720QM: Auf Sandy Brige Architektur basierender Quad-Core Prozessor mit 2.2-3.3 GHz Taktung, integrierter HD Graphics 3000 Grafikkarte (650-1300MHz) und integriertem Dualchannel DDR3 Speicherkontroller.

Intel Core i5:
