Das W500 tritt insgesamt eine würdige Nachfolge der bisherigen T61p Modelle an. Das Gehäuse bietet die bekannten Qualitäten wie etwa eine hohe Widerstandsfähigkeit gegenüber Abnutzungserscheinungen und bleibt mit dem klassischen Thinkpad Design auch seiner bekannten Optik treu. Der neue Displayport bietet bereits direkt am Notebook die Möglichkeit Hochauflösende externe Monitore an das Gerät anzuschließen. Ansonsten ist die Positionierung der einzelnen Schnittstellen leider sehr linkslastig ausgefallen, mit der vor allem Linkshänder zu kämpfen haben werden. Dank Docking Port lässt sich aber auch dieses Problem umgehen. Die Tastatur konnte in unserem zweiten Testsample wieder deutlich besser gefallen, als dies noch beim ersten, nicht für den Verkauf bestimmten Pre-Sample, der Fall war. Die kritisierte mögliche Durchbiegung hält sich nun in Grenzen und sollte sich nicht auf das ansonsten hervorragende Tippgefühl auswirken. Einzige Stärke des eingesetzten WUXGA Displays ist seine hohe Auflösung und die grundsätzlich guten stabilen Blickwinkel des Panels. In Punkto Helligkeit gehört das Display leider nicht zu den Vorzeigekandidaten, im Gegenteil.

Keine Überraschungen bringt das Lenovo Thinkpad W500 im Hinblick Gehäuse und Verarbeitung mit sich. Lenovo liefert ein bekannt robustes Chassis im klassischen Thinkpad-Design, welches vor allem aufgrund seiner Widerstandsfähigkeit gegenüber alltäglich auftretender Belastungen punkten kann. Bei den gebotenen Anschlussoptionen kann vor allem der neue digitale Display Port positiv erwähnt werden. Mit diesem kann nunmehr auch ohne eine optionale Docking Lösung ein externer Bildschirm mit einer hohen Auflösung bei bester digitaler Übertragungsqualität an das Notebook angeschlossen werden. Für Pluspunkte sorgt außerdem auch des serienmäßig integrierte UMTS Breitbandmodul, mit dem eine ortsunabhängige, kabellose Internetverbindung möglich wird. Abgesehen von dem gewohnten Tippgefühl der bekannten, noch aus IBM-Zeiten stammenden Thinkpad Tastatur, und dem etwas gewöhnungsbedürftigem Tastenlayout, zeigt die Tastatureinheit unseres Testsamples leider ein paar Schwächen. So lies sich die Tastatureinheit teils deutlich eindrücken, und auch das Anschlagverhalten der Leertaste lies zu wünschen über. Das Display bot zwar eine großzügige und übersichtliche Auflösung von 1920x1200 Pixel, konnte aber bei der gebotenen Displayhelligkeit mit durchschnittlich 140 cd/m² nicht wirklich überzeugen. Abzüge gibt es auch bei der Ausleuchtung des Panels mit gerade einmal 78.4%.

Schon allein aufgrund der Preisgestaltung kommt das W700 ohnehin nahezu ausschließlich für finanziell starke Business Kunden in Frage. Diese dürfen sich dann allerdings lange an einem robusten Gehäuse mit passabler Verarbeitung erfreuen. Leider kommen an den Oberflächen des W700 mit Ausnahme des Displaydeckels nur Kunststoffbauteile zum Einsatz. Dadurch vermag das Notebook zwar haptisch nicht ganz zu überzeugen, hinsichtlich der Stabilität des Gerätes tut dies aber nichts zur Sache. Am Notebook selbst werden schon nahezu alle notwendigen Ports angeboten. Lediglich ein eSATA Port bleibt dem User vorenthalten. Eine passende Docking Station ist dennoch empfehlenswert, liegen doch 3 der insgesamt 5 angebotenen USB Ports weit vorne an der Seitenkante. Diese, sowie auch alle anderen Anschlussmöglichkeiten könnten mit Hilfe einer Docking Station an der Rückseite des Notebooks konzentriert werden, und das Notebook selbst rasch von allen angeschlossenen Geräten getrennt werden.

We've been dying to get our hands on the dual-screen version of the Lenovo ThinkPad W700 for ages, but alas, this was not meant to be as Lenovo didn't have appropriate units available for this region. With that said, the single screen version shares pretty much the same specs and based on what we've been testing, the machine actually does deliver the goods. Hardware performance was top notch, and the build and feel of the unit was excellent. Retailing at S$8000, the W700 is not one for the faint hearted consumer. Then again, we really only expect businesses that require the use of heavy duty machines for graphical design to acquire these powerful mobile workstations.

You can't really travel with this thing but for a price around $3000 it might be a good idea to keep this puppy locked away safe at home anyway. The W700 is one heck of a powerhouse with a great selection of features. While it is heavy and large in size and will take a nice chunk out of your pockets, if you are looking for a top of the line computer for visual and graphic aid, this is the laptop for you. The 17 inch Lenovo w700 is a great machine and worth the money.

The W700 is something completely new to the ThinkPad line, while being a natural extension of models like the T61p. Sooner or later Lenovo had to come out with a 17-inch model and it’s nice to see that they did it right the first time. This means a spare-no-expense product, but the W700 isn’t for the general consumer, or even for most professionals. It is for a range of demanding users, from content creators to engineers who need serious power and occasional mobility. Even within the small subset of prospective buyers we can see segmentation as the need of someone buying a $3000 W700 will be somewhat different than the person buying (most likely expensing) a $6000 model, but the processor, graphics, and storage options make a versatile product. Overall, it’s a lot of technology to stuff into a notebook and it’s one of a very small group of elite workstation replacements to arrive this year.

The W700 is something completely new to the ThinkPad line, while being a natural extension of models like the T61p. Sooner or later Lenovo had to come out with a 17-inch model and it’s nice to see that they did it right the first time. This means a spare-no-expense product, but the W700 isn’t for the general consumer, or even for most professionals. It is for a range of demanding users, from content creators to engineers who need serious power and occasional mobility. Even within the small subset of prospective buyers we can see segmentation as the need of someone buying a $3000 W700 will be somewhat different than the person buying (most likely expensing) a $6000 model, but the processor, graphics, and storage options make a versatile product. Overall, it’s a lot of technology to stuff into a notebook and it’s one of a very small group of elite workstation replacements to arrive this year.

Lenovo has been prolific of late producing, like a stage magician, a seemingly endless string of laptops from its copious pockets. Last month we had the company's first netbook - the IdeaPad S10e - and the excellent, low-cost ThinkPad SL500, and before that we had the rather more swanky 15in T500 with its high resolution 1,680 x 1,080 screen and switchable dual graphics. Now it's the turn of the W500, which to look at is as inseperable from the T500 as an identical twin. Both bear the same dimensions at 356 x 255 x 35mm, both weigh almost exactly the same - to within a few grammes - and both have precisely the same chassis. A super-fast workstation laptop with a great screen - but it's only worth buying if you need the ISV certification.

Das Thinkpad W700ds kann man nicht mit normalen Notebook-Maßstäben messen. Abmessungen, Gewicht und Akkulaufzeit dürften bei der Entwicklung dieses Powerpakets nur eine untergeordnete Rolle gespielt haben. Vielmehr ist die mobile Workstation auf maximale Rechenleistung getrimmt, was angesichts der beeindruckenden Komponenten und Benchmarks zweifelsfrei gelungen ist. Obendrauf gibt es noch Features wie das zweite Display, das integrierte Grafiktablett sowie die Farbkalibrierung. Anwender aus den Bereichen CAD sowie Grafik- und Videobearbeitung werden diese zu schätzen wissen. Schade, dass der zweite Screen gegen das Hauptdisplay qualitativ deutlich abfällt.

The second screen doesn't add much functionality, and it consumes an inordinate amount of battery life. It's a pretty big waste of money, too--it adds $420 to the cost of an otherwise-comparable W700. For that money, you could buy a 24-inch desktop display, connect it to a W700, and enjoy a desktop that stretches from here to Sunday. The W700 is a well-designed desktop replacement notebook; the W700ds adds nothing that I couldn't get in another, better form, for less money.

Even if you’re willing to accept that full-desktop power comes with a full-desktop weight and size (as you should be), it will take a user who is absolutely salivating for a second screen (and willing to overlook a number of other annoying factors) to find satisfaction in the W700ds. The side screen’s small size, poor image quality and buggy drivers all conspired to make it truly a tough sell. Sure, it will make life in Photoshop a little easier when you can drag your tools off to the side, but we’re not really sure if that additional convenience and capability comes anywhere near justifying the additional price, size, and weight. Power users like video editors and travelling engineers should probably check into the original W700 as a more practical purchase.

Exact pricing has not yet been set, but our configuration is valued at close to $4,600 without the secondary screen, and Lenovo said that the second screen will come with a $500 premium. You can bring the cost down by hundreds of dollars and still get the secondary display if you configure the system with a dual-core CPU, a slower graphics chip, and a single hard drive. So is a 10.6-inch screen worth an extra $500 when 19-inch external monitors can be had for $100? It is if you need to take that screen with you to a work site and you can’t pack an external monitor in a carton. As mobile components become less expensive, we expect the prices of high-performance notebooks like this one to come closer to those of similarly configured desktops. If you need that kind of mobile horsepower and versatility today, the W700ds is worth every penny.

It offers some superb performance thanks to its quad core processor yet still manages some excellent running times. Graphics professionals will also want to look into the upgraded IPS display and color calibrator that is one of the best on the market for color accuracy.

It provides great all-over performance with its quad-core i7 processor, NVIDIA Quadro 2000M graphics, and 8GB DDR3 RAM. The 95% color gamut FHD display is easily conducive to professionals in the graphics arts or similar industry. It also has a wide range of ports and features, such as the two HighSpeed 3.0 USB ports and the Pantone huey PRO color calibration system. We did not feel as though the complaints we did have about the workstation were deal breakers in the least bit. For those in need of a powerful workstation, this system should be a definite option.

Diese Karten können nur sehr alte und sehr anspruchslose 3D Spiele flüssig darstellen.  Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung oder (SD) Videoschnitt sind jedoch ohne große Einschränkungen möglich.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650: In 55nm gefertigter DirectX 10.1 Mittelklasse-Grafikchip mit vergleichbarer Leistung einer 8600M GT Grafikkarte. Dank Avivo Video Engine kann die Grafikkarte den Prozessor bei verschiedensten Videooperationen (auch HD Video) entlasten.

ATI Mobility FireGL V5700: Die ATI Mobility Fire GL V5700 von AMD basiert auf die Notebookgrafikkarte Mobility Radeon HD 3650 und ist für professionelle Anwendungen (CAD, 3D Programme) optimiert. 

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.

NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M: Professionelle Workstation Grafikkarte mit zertifizierten Treibern. Dank 128 Shadern (9800M GTX nur 112)  sogar schneller als die 9800M GTX. Im Vergleich zur FX 3800M / GTX 280M noch in 65nm gefertigt und geringer getaktet.

NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800M: Professionelle Workstation Grafikkarte mit zertifizierten Treibern. Basiert auf den selben Kern wie die GTX 280M. Im Vergleich zur FX 3700M, sind die Taktraten erhöht worden und es wurde der Fertigungsprozess von 65nm auf 55nm umgestellt.

NVIDIA Quadro FX 2800M: Professionelle Workstation Grafikkarte mit zertifizierten Treibern. Dank 96 Shader Kernen dürfte die Karte auf eine 9800M GT basieren, jedoch wurde der Kerntakt etwas erhöht.

NVIDIA Quadro 2000M: Mobile Mittelklasse Workstation Grafikkarte basierend auf die Fermi Generation. Der 128 Bit DDR3 Grafikspeicher könnte jedoch zum Flaschenhals werden.

Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.

NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M: Professionelle Mittelklasse Grafikkarte welche wahrscheinlich auf die GeForce 330M basiert.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Core Duo Nachfolger mit längerer Pipeline und 5-20% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs bei 0.5 - 3 Watt mehr Stromverbrauch.

Der Notebook Core 2 Duo ist baugleich mit den Desktop Core 2 Duo Prozessoren, jedoch werden die Notebook-Prozessoren mit niedrigeren Spannungen und geringerem Frontsidebus Takt betrieben. Von der Leistung bleiben gleichgetaktete Notebooks deswegen (und auch wegen der langsameren Festplatten) 20-25% hinter Desktop PCs.

T9400: Der Core 2 Duo T9400 ist ein schneller Mittelklasse Prozessor mit 2.53 GHz und 6 MB Level 2 Cache. Verglichen mit dem gleich schnellen P9500, braucht der T9400 mehr Strom (höherer TDP).

Intel Core 2 Extreme: Die höchstgetaktete CPU von Intels Core 2 Duo Serie wird als Core 2 Extreme (mit saftigem Aufpreis) verkauft. Als besonderheit wurde bei den Extreme Prozessoren der Übertaktungsschutz entfernt.

QX9300: Mobiler Quad-Core Prozessor ohne Übertaktungsschutz und mit einem TDP von 45 Watt nur für große und schwere Notebooks gedacht. Die Performance ist dank der 2.5 GHz auch bei single Threaded Anwendungen relativ gut.

Intel Core i7:

820QM: Der Core i7-820QM ist ein High-End Quad Core Prozessor für Notebooks und taktet dank Turbo Modus automatisch zwischen 1.73-3.06 GHz. Ausserdem unterstützt er Hyperthreading zur gleichzeitigen Abarbeitung von 8 Threads.

920XM: Stärkster Core i7 und dadurch Notebookprozessor in 2009 und mit 55 Watt TDP auch sehr stromhungrig. Nur für Notebooks mit starkem Kühlsystem geeignet. Mit Turbo bis zu 3,2 GHz schnell (bei Benutzung nur eines Kerns).

720QM: Der Core i7-720QM war zur Zeit der Einführung der langsamste Core i7-9xx Quad Core Prozessor. Er taktet dank Turbo Modus automatisch zwischen 1.6-2.8 GHz. Außerdem unterstützt er Hyperthreading zur gleichzeitigen Abarbeitung von 8 Threads. Im Vergleich zu den stärkeren Core i7 bietet er außerdem nur 6MB L3 Cache.

620M: Der Core i7-620M ist der schnellste Dual-Core Prozessor (im ersten Quartal 2010) von Intel und taktet dank Turbo von 2.66 - 3.33 GHz (je nach Auslastung). Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-766 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). Dadurch ist der gesamte TDP von 35 Watt nicht sehr hoch.

2820QM: Auf Sandy Brige Architektur basierender Quad-Core Prozessor mit mit integrierter Grafikkarte und integriertem DDR3 Speicherkontroller. Im Vergleich zum Core i7-2720QM etwas höher getaktet und mit deutlich größerem Level 3 Cache.

17.00: Diese Displaygrösse ist ein Standardformat für Desktop-Replacements. Die DTR-Laptops sind schwerer zu tragen, brauchen mehr Strom, dafür sind Texte leicht lesbar und hohe Auflösungen kein Problem. DTR sind hauptsächlich für stationären Schreibtischeinsatz vorgesehen, wo Gewicht und Energiehunger egal sind. Dafür genießt man die Vorzüge hoher Auflösungen (mehr Details, besser lesbar).
