Das Lenovo Moto Z Play kann in allen Testkategorien ordentlich punkten. Ein stabiles und schickes Design aus Metall und Glas geht hier allem voran. Das Display ist nicht außergewöhnlich aber ein brauchbarer AMOLED Panel. Auch ansonsten setzt Lenovo die richtigen Haken. Der Fingerabdrucksensor ist schnell und genau, das System flott und aktuelles Android 7 gibt es per OTA Update, der Lautsprecher interessant platziert und klanglich gut.

Dafür punktet das Play mit außerordentlich hohen Laufzeiten. Die höher als beim Moto Z auflösende Kamera bildet detailreich ab, der Fokus arbeitet aber träge bei wenig Licht und produziert dann auch rauschige Bilder.

Modell: Nachdem Lenovo die Übernahme von Motorola abgeschlossen hat, ist es interessant, was aus der Moto-Z-Produktlinie wird. Das Moto Z Play ist dritte Gerät der Moto-Z-Familie. Es fällt mit der längsten Akkulaufzeit auf und soll mit nur einmal Aufladen bis zu zwei Tage durchhalten. Daher und weil das Moto Z Play zudem als "Budget-Smartphone" bezeichnet wird, überrascht es nicht, dass es unlängst viel Aufmerksamkeit auf sich gezogen hat. Auf den ersten Blick handelt es sich auch um das dickste und klobigste Modell der Moto-Z-Produktlinie. Es misst 156,4 x 76,4 x 7 mm und wiegt 165 g. Ungeachtet des Budget-Faktors bedeckt das Phone ein Beschichtung, die es spritzwasser und staubabweisend macht, allerdings ohne einer offiziellen Zertifizierung. Ein Schwachpunkt des Designs ist die MotoMod-Schnittstelle, welche sich nahe der Unterkante an der Rückseite des Phones befindet. Vielleicht sollten User dadurch angeregt werden, das Moto Z Play mit MotoMods modularem Zubehör zu erweitern; ansonsten kann sie mit einer Abdeckung versiegelt werden.

Sein 5,5 Zoll großer kapazitiver Super-AMOLED-Touchscreen unterstützt bis zu 16M Farben und eine Auflösung von 1.080 x 1.920 Pixeln, was für ein Budget-Smartphone großartig ist. Ein weiteres erstklassiges Feature ist der Fingerabdruckleser an jener Stelle, wo sich üblicherweise der Home-Button befindet. Die Kamera ist mit einem 16-MP-Sensor mit f/2-Blende, Laser/Phasenerkennungs-Autofokus, sowie 4K-Videoaufzeichnung bei weitem überdurchschnittlich. Im Inneren des Moto Z Play arbeitet eine Qualcomm MSM8953 Snapdragon 625 CPU. Das ist die einzige Komponente in diesem Phone, welche nahelegt, dass es sich nicht um ein hochwertiges Flaggschiff-Gerät handelt. Davon abgesehen, eignet sich das Phone definitiv für Multitasking und schnelle Alltagsleistung. Bei grafikintensiven Spielen kommt es allerdings zu deutlichen Verzögerungen. In puncto Kommunikationsausstattung bietet das Phone WiFi und Bluetooh und ist NFC-konform.

Aufgrund der Vergangenheit bleibt es unklar, wie engagiert Lenovo Software-Updates für dieses Smartphone bereitstellen wird. Gegenwärtig läuft das Gerät unter Android OS, v6.0.1 (Marshmallow) und ein Upgrade auf v7.0 (Nougat) ist geplant. Anders als seine Vorgänger verfügt das Moto Z Play über eine Kopfhörerbuchse (welche noch nicht überflüssig erscheint). Ein USB-Type-C-Port befindet sich unmittelbar daneben. Das Moto Z Play wird sowohl als Single- als auch als Dual-SIM-Variante ausgeliefert. Insgesamt wirkt das Moto Z Play wie ein erstklassiges Smartphone zum Budget-Preis. Seine starke Akkulaufzeit bleibt sein Schlüsselmerkmal, doch in puncto Design fällt es zurück.
