Test: AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3995WX & Radeon Pro W6800 in der Lenovo ThinkStation P620 High-End-Workstation

64 (Vierundsechzig!) Kerne. Lenovo bietet mit der aktuellen ThinkStation P620 eine solide Plattform für kompakte High-End-Workstations. Wir haben uns das 13.000-Euro-Gerät, bestehend aus dem AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3995WX und der nagelneuen AMD Radeon Pro W6800, im Test genauer angesehen.

Lenovo ist schon lange im Workstation-Segment beheimatet und bietet mit der ThinkStation-P620-Serie eine solide Plattform auf Basis der aktuellen Hardware. Dabei setzt der Hersteller nicht auf handelsübliche Komponenten. Vielmehr kommt eine eigens entwickelte Plattform zum Einsatz, welche auf die Bedürfnisse einer Workstation zugeschnitten sind. Bei unserem Testsample steckt im dem gut durchdachten und modularen Gehäuse kein geringerer als der aktuell stärkste AMD Prozessor und AMDs neuste Workstation Grafikkarte.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3995WX trifft AMD Radeon Pro W6800

Der AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3995WX ist eine 64-Kern-CPU mit insgesamt 128 Threads. Bei der Grafikkarte handelt es sich um die AMD Radeon Pro W6800, welche die AMD Radeon Pro W5700 beerbt und nun wie die aktuellen Desktop-Gaming-Grafikkarten auf RDNA2-Basis daherkommt. Damit bietet die AMD Radeon Pro W6800 auch hardwareseitige Unterstützung für Echtzeit Raytracing und kann auf 32 GB VRAM zurückgreifen. Mit satten 256 GB DDR4 Arbeitsspeicher lassen sich auch sehr speicherintensive Anwendungen problemlos meistern, denn dank dem AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3995WX gibt es Octa-Channel-Unterstützung, was zu sehr guten Datendurchsätzen beim Arbeitsspeicher führt. Mit 256 GB fällt die verbaute SSD bei unserem Testexemplar der P620 im Verhältnis sehr klein aus. Hier sollte man bei seiner Wunschkonfiguration wohl lieber gleich zum nächstgrößeren Modell greifen.

Apropo Wunschkonfiguration: Im Lenovo Online-Shop kann man sich die Lenovo ThinkStation P620 nach Herzenslust konfigurieren. Hierfür bietet der Hersteller eine Vielzahl an Möglichkeiten. Wer das Gerät aber in der von uns getesteten Version kaufen möchte, muss tief in die Tasche greifen. Der Basispreis (3.179 Euro) rückt bei der uns vorliegenden Ultimate-Konfiguration in weite Ferne: Rund 13.000 Euro muss man für das hier im Test genutzte System aufbringen.

Prozessor Benchmarks - Multicore-Monster Threadripper Pro 3995WX

Der AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3995WX ist ein wahres Rechenmonster, wenn man sich die Benchmarkergebnisse der Multi-Core-Tests ansieht. Mit seinen 64 Kernen und insgesamt 128 Threads ist der AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3995WX bestens für Anwendungen die zahlreiche Rechenkerne nutzen geeignet. Dazu zählt unter anderem auch die Virtualisierung von mehreren Rechnern auf einem System. Mit den großzügigen 256-GB-DDR4-RAM stellt dies das Flaggschiff nicht vor eine große Herausforderung. Auf die Vorzüge der aktuellsten Zen3-Architektur kann der AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3995WX allerdings nicht zurückgreifen, da unter dem riesigen Heatspreader acht Matisse-Dies verbaut sind, die wiederum auf der Zen2-Architektur beruhen. Dadurch resultiert auch der relativ große Rückstand bei den Single-Core-Tests gegenüber den Ryzen der 5000er-Generation. Gleichwohl ist der Basistakt beim 64-Kerner mit 2,7 GHz auch etwas zurückhaltender. Mit dem Intel Core i9-10980XE kann es unser Testsample aber dennoch aufnehmen.

Lenovo ThinkStation P620 in der Cinebench-R15-Multi-Schleife

Lenovo verbaut einen Tower-Kühler mit zwei Lüftern und sorgt damit für eine ausreichende Kühlung des AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3995WX. Den Lasttest mit der Cinebench-R15-Multi-Schleife meistert die Workstation problemlos und erreicht im Durchschnitt mit 9.747 Punkten ein solides Ergebnis. Einen deutlichen Leistungseinbruch im Vergleich zu den ersten Durchläufen können wir nicht beobachten.

Anwendungsleistung und Renderperformance

Bei unseren Anwendungsbenchmarks erreicht die Lenovo ThinkStation P620 in der vorliegenden Testausstattung relativ gute Werte. Bei den durchgeführten Rendertests, etwa beim SPECviewperf 2020, kann die AMD Radeon Pro W6800 zeigen, was in ihr steckt. In vielen Einzeldisziplinen ist sie sogar deutlich schneller als eine Nvidia Titan RTX, welche mit einer Quadro RTX 6000 vergleichen werden kann. Dennoch muss man hier aber die unterschiedlichen Treiber beachten, denn die Quadro-Modelle haben wie auch die Radeon Pro Modelle spezielle Treiber, welche zusätzliche Optionen bieten und für hohe Performance und Stabilität bei professionellen Anwendungen optimiert sind.
Der verbaute Massenspeicher unserer Testkonfiguration bietet 256 GB Kapazität und liefert dank NVMe-Protokoll sehr schnelle Übertragungsraten. Aufgrund des sehr knapp bemessenen Speicherplatzes haben wir für das Review das System zusätzlich mit unserer Intel Optane 905P ausgestattet. Auch diese lieferte im Test sehr gute Werte, wie Sie auf den Bilder sehen können. Insgesamt lassen sich zwei M.2-SSDs auf dem Mainboard installieren. Für weitere Massenspeicher bietet das Mainboard zusätzliche SATA-Ports. Gleichwohl kann aber auch ein zusätzlicher SAS-Controller installiert werden, um ein ausfallsicheres Festplatten-Array (Bsp. RAID5) zu erstellen.

3D-Performance

Obwohl es sich bei der AMD Radeon Pro W6800 um eine reine High-End Workstation-Grafikkarte handelt, haben wir einige Games ausgewählt, um die Leistung der GPU im Vergleich mit den aktuellen Gaming-Grafikkarten zu beurteilen. Mit den verbauten 32-GB-VRAM eignet sich die AMD Radeon Pro W6800 eigentlich perfekt für 4K-Gaming. Dies ist mit dieser Grafikkarte auch möglich, denn bei allen getesteten Spielen erreichte die AMD Radeon Pro W6800 flüssige Frameraten. Gleichwohl lässt sich der Rückstand beim direkten Vergleich mit den Gaming-Grafikkarte nicht wegdiskutieren. Die AMD Radeon Pro W6800 sortiert sich meistens zwischen einer Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 und der AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT ein. Die Leistung variiert treiberbedingt von Spiel zu Spiel und fällt teilweise auch deutlich schlechter aus. Lenovo ThinkStation P620 ist überraschend leise

Bei den Emissionswerten sollte man aufgrund der verbauten Komponenten keine Bestwerte erwarten. Dennoch überrascht das System im normalen Betrieb mit einem angenehmen Arbeitsgeräusch, welches hörbar, aber bei weitem nicht störend ist. Erst unter voller Last macht die Lenovo ThinkStation P620 mit auftourenden Lüftern auf sich aufmerksam. Mit maximal 42,4 dB(A) ist das System aber noch deutlich leiser, als so mancher Gaming-Laptop oder mobile Workstation. Auch wenn dieser direkte Vergleich etwas hinkt, kann man sich die Lautstärke des Systems aber subjektiv betrachtet etwas besser vorstellen. Direkt nach dem Einschalten macht das System deutlich, dass es auch noch viel lauter werden kann. Glücklicherweise regelt die Lüftersteuerung nach einiger Zeit die Drehzahlen runter, denn ständig 55 dB(A) möchte man nicht unter dem Schreibtisch stehen haben.

Threadripper Pro 3995WX behält einen kühlen Kopf

Die AMD Radeon Pro W6800 wird unter extremer Last noch etwas wärmer als die CPU (86 °C). Maximal 99 Grad gibt uns GPU-Z als Hot-Spot-Temperatur an. Der Radiallüfter der Radeon Pro W6800 rotiert mit knapp 2.000 Umdrehungen, was etwa 40 % entspricht. Im Radeon-Treiber-Menü lässt sich die Drehzahl jedoch auch manuell anpassen. Allerdings wird es dann recht schnell laut, was in erster Linie dem einzelnen Radial-Lüfter zu verdanken ist. Der Vorteil dieser Konstruktion ist die direkte Abfuhr der Abwärme der Grafikkarte aus dem Gehäuse.

Hohe Last lässt auch den Energieverbrauch nach oben schnellen

Beim Energiehunger ist die ThinkStation P620 aufgrund der potenten Hardware recht weit oben im Vergleich zu finden. Dennoch relativiert sich die Energieaufnahme, wenn man die zu erwartende Leistung des Systems bedenkt. Der AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3995WX ist mit einer Leistungsaufnahme von bis zu 280 Watt angegeben, die er sich unter Last auch genehmigt. Mit 86 °C ist dieser unter Last auch sehr warm, kann aber trotzdem den Basistakt von 2,7 GHz stabil halten. Beim Stresstest notieren wir mit 420 Watt den höchsten Energieverbrauch. Gleichwohl benötigt aber auch die AMD Radeon Pro W6800 auch noch einmal bis zu 250 Watt unter Last. Damit wird recht schnell klar, warum Lenovo das System mit einem 1.000-Watt-Netzteil ausrüstet.
