Das Microsoft Surface Book 3 ist das neueste Mitglied der Surface-Book-Familie. Microsoft hat dieses vielseitige Gerät mit Intels Ice-Lake-Generation modernisiert. Das Design des Surface Book 3 besteht aus einer Magnesium-Legierung, die auch für das Keyboard-Dock benutzt wurde. Da die Hardware fast gänzlich um das Display ist, ist das Gerät etwas schwer, besonders in der oberen Hälfte. Auf dem Tisch kann man es sehr stabil positionieren, wenn man es aber auf dem Schoß benutzen will, muss man Acht geben, dass es nicht nach hinten kippt. Außerdem hat das Surface Book keine Wartungsklappe oder ähnliches. Der Haltemechanismus zwischen dem Keyboard-Dock und dem Tablet ist allerdings sehr zuverlässig.

Das Surface Book 3 wurde mit einem 13,5-Zoll-Touchscreen mit IPS-Panel und einer Auflösung von 3000 x 2000 Pixel ausgestattet. Die Dimensionen des Gerätes sind etwas ungewöhnlich im Vergleich zu anderen Windows-Tablets; nicht nur wegen des recht seltenen 3:2-Seitenverhältnisses, sondern auch wegen der Höhe des Keyboard-Docks. Aufgrund des ungewöhnlichen Scharniers ist das Surface Book 2,4 cm dick, es ist also nicht sehr schlank.

Was Anschlüsse angeht, so hat dieses Gerät nur wenige. Allerdings hat sowohl das Tablet als auch das Keyboard-Dock einen Surface-Connector, mit dem man ein Surface Dock 2 anschließen kann, um alle möglichen Anschlüsse zur Verfügung zu haben. Das Tablet selber hat einen USB-Typ-C-Anschluss, mit dem man das Gerät auch laden kann.

Die Tastatur des Microsoft Surface Book 3 eignet sich gut für längere Tipp-Aufgaben. Die Tasten sind sehr reaktionsschnell, und das Feedback ist sehr angenehm. Die Markierungen auf den Tasten sind auch lesbar, wenn die Beleuchtung deaktiviert ist. In hellen Umgebungen würde die weiße Beleuchtung das Entziffern der Markierungen erschweren, bei schlechten Lichtverhältnissen ist die Tastatur aber gleichmäßig beleuchtet und gut zu erkennen.

Leistungsmäßig kann man zwischen zwei Varianten des Gerätes wählen. Das Modell mit einem Intel Core i5-1035G7 und einer integrierten Intel Iris Plus Graphics G7 eignet sich gut für alltägliche Aufgaben, während man für bessere Grafik-Leistung das Modell mit einem Intel Core i7-1065G7 und einer integrierten Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q wählen sollte. Alles in allem bietet das Surface Book 3 viele gute Eigenschaften für ein kleineres Convertible, es kommt aber natürlich auf die Bedürfnisse und Vorlieben des Käufers an.

Microsoft Surface Book 3 (15)’s display has a touchscreen IPS panel (LP150QD112604) with a very high resolution (near 4K), comfortable viewing angles, very good contrast ratio, and 92% sRGB coverage. Its factory calibration is pretty decent, but when our Gaming and Web design profile is applied, the color-accuracy improves even further to a standard-matching level. This makes it usable for Web design, creative work, and e-commerce. However, our particular unit suffered from a severe non-uniformity in the top right corner, which declassifies it for the aforementioned workflow, should you desire perfection. On the bright side, the panel doesn’t use aggressive PWM so it’s generally safe for work.

Microsoft's update to the 15-inch Surface Book 2, the aptly named Surface Book 3, remains essentially the same. It's still the laptop that tries to be all things to all people: it's a clamshell, a convertible and a standalone tablet, where most laptops settle for two out of three. But in the past couple of years the competition for creative dollars has gotten a lot tougher while the Surface Book has pretty much stood still. If you want its exact combination of convertible/detachable/clamshell operation or want to stick with it as an upgrade from the Surface Book 2, it won't disappoint.

Microsoft’s Surface Book 3 attempts to be all things for all people: the PC you create with during the day, and the laptop you relax with at night. Honestly, Microsoft’s vision of a big, beautiful workstation/tablet/gaming PC/productivity machine has always deeply resonated with me. It's hard to find a gaming PC with such an excellent keyboard, or a productivity laptop with such a powerful GPU inside. All of this is elegantly wrapped, with the Surface bow on top. This is Microsoft’s premier PC experience.

It's been about 2.5 years since the Surface Book 2, Microsoft's laptop that tries to be all things to all people; it's a clamshell, a convertible and a detachable, where most laptops settle for two out of three. Even after all that time, the Surface Book 3 gets a mostly run-of-the-mill refresh, launched along with a brushed-up version of Microsoft's tiniest tablet, the Surface Go 2: 10th-gen Intel processors with the accompanying memory improvements, current-generation Nvidia GTX graphics, upgrade to Wi-Fi 6 and a bump to 10Gbps USB-C from 5Gbps.

Diese Grafikkarten sollten alle modernen Spiele flüssig darstellen können. Anspruchsvolle Spiele müssen jedoch in mittlerer Detailstufe gespielt werden. Ältere und weniger anspruchsvolle Spiele wie die Sims Serie können auch in hohen Detailsstufen flüssig dargestellt werden.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q: Mid-Range Notebook-Grafikkarte basierend auf der Desktop GTX 1650 mit Turing Architektur. Bietet keine Raytracing und Tensor-Kerne im Gegensatz zu den stärkeren RTX 2000 Modellen. Im Vergleich zur normalen 1650, ist die Max-Q Variante niedriger getaktet bei deutlich niedrigerem Stromverbrauch (35 versus 50 Watt).

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q: Mid-Range Notebook-Grafikkarte basierend auf der Desktop GTX 1660 Ti mit TU116 jedoch bei 60 Watt TGP (versus 80 Watt der Laptop Version und 110 Watt der Desktop Karte). Bietet keine Raytracing und Tensor-Kerne im Gegensatz zu den stärkeren RTX 2000 Modellen. Die Leistung soll in etwa auf dem Level einer GTX 1070 Max-Q liegen.

Intel Ice Lake:

i7-1065G7: Auf der Ice-Lake-Architektur basierender ULV-SoC (System-on-a-Chip) für schlanke Notebooks und Ultrabooks. Integriert unter anderem vier CPU-Kerne der Sunnycove Microarchitektur mit 1,3 (Basis) - 3,9 GHz und HyperThreading sowie eine starke Iris Plus G7 Grafikeinheit und wird in 10-Nanometer-Technik gefertigt. Durch die 18 % bessere IPC Performance von Sunnycove versus Skylake sollte die CPU Performance mit dem alten Whisky-Lake Core i7-8565U (max 4,1 GHz) mithalten können.
