Ultimately, the HP Victus 15 is an $800 laptop that can game. That fact alone is enough to recommend it to some degree (again, especially if you see it on sale). But it is worth considering a few alternatives. For example, the Victus 15 with an RTX 3050 (which we’d expect to deliver a better experience on those AAA titles) MSRPs for $969 but is on sale for $697 as of this writing. Acer’s staple Nitro 5 with that RTX GPU is currently available for $899 (just $100 more than my test model), as is Dell’s G15 with an even more powerful RTX 3050 Ti. My point is that if you can pay just $100 more, can find a good discount, or are willing to buy used, there are all kinds of options available for close to this price that can really nail AAA games. At the end of the day, this is a budget laptop with budget laptop frame rates — and if you’re in a position to do so, you can get much more gaming power for not too much more money.

As long as you don’t plan on running Microsoft Flight Simulator, which is known for bricking GPUs, Shadow of the Tomb Raider (there’s not enough VRAM), or any other game that requires a lot of graphical juice, you should be fine with the Victus 15. My only reservation with the HP Victus 15 is that its rival, the Acer Nitro 5, is often regularly discounted. At one point, it was only $50 more than the HP ($849 at Best Buy(opens in new tab)). And according to our testing, the Nitro 5 blows the Victus 15 out of the water — and it has a modern Nvidia GeForce RTX 30-series GPU. The HP Victus 15 is regularly discounted, too. The good news is that the Victus 15 (15-fb0000)’s base model is one of the most affordable gaming notebooks on the market. The bad news, on the contrary, is that we know the exact reason for the low price. Or to put it more accurately – reasons. First – the use of older hardware. The Ryzen 5000H series is significantly less expensive than the 6000H series. However, we can see that the Victus 15 (15-fa0000) is similarly priced while featuring 12th Gen Intel CPUs. So the main reason shouldn’t be the processor. Another reason, of course, is the GTX 1650. This cute little GPU needs only 50W of TGP to work, but it does a very good job, considering the price tag. Well, we recommend investing a bit more to get the next step – RTX 3050, or RTX 3050 Ti, since they will offer a significant bump in performance. And if you get the base option, you can still upgrade its RAM and storage down the line. This is thanks to the two SODIMM slots, which work with DDR4 memory in dual-channel mode, and the single M.2 PCIe x4 slot, used for Gen 3 SSDs. At the end of the day, buying this device means making a lot of sacrifices. You have to be perfectly aware that this is not a top-of-the-line notebook, and it will not be competitive with more expensive machines. However, it does a great job of being more than a gaming machine, so we think that it is worth getting the base option. Oh yes, and don’t forget to stay away from the TN display option.

The new Victus isn’t a bad laptop but neither does it stand out from the crowd, which is a shame given how good the original was. Given the sub-£1,000 price, a less-than-stellar display is no great surprise, but omitting a cheap connector block for a second SSD and specifying a low-TGP GPU is disappointing. Those are not choices made to hit a price point. They are choices made to make the Victus not as good as it could be. All of which is a shame, because the Victus looks the part, has a good keyboard and speakers, and the price is right for a machine with an RTX 4050 inside.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Mobile: Mid-Range Notebook-Grafikkarte basierend auf der Desktop GTX 1650 mit Turing Architektur. 16.00: Dieser Bereich für Displayformate war und ist eine Seltenheit. Es ist größer als der allgemeine Standard von 15 Zoll, aber noch nicht im Bereich der großen Workstations. Man hat üblicherweise höhere Bildschirmauflösungen zur Verfügung, darunter leidet aber auch die Portabilität.
