We really like the Velvet’s design and we appreciate that it does everything adequately. The headphone jack is a nice bonus, even without that lovely 32-bit HiFi Quad DAC. Still, without a high-refresh display or OIS for the main camera, the Velvet cuts a few too many important corners in this segment, and the user experience is compromised by excessive bloatware and by software that could use an update. At R11 800, the LG Velvet 5G is pushing the top of the midrange market, still below the R20k we see for some flagships. What it has going for itself is 5G, although competition for cheaper solutions in the 5G space, such as the Huawei P40 lite 5G, will soon start crowding the market. The Velvet’s new look is impressive and the sleekness of this metal design and rounded edges will win new users for LG. That said, LG disappoints with the cameras on the Velvet, and I expected more from the brand since their previous phones were strong in this department. It's a decent smartphone that will serve its master well, but ultimately the Velvet lacks that something special to make it a fan favourite.

Das LG Velvet ist das neueste LG-Smartphone. Der Hersteller ging mit diesem Gerät in eine andere Richtung als mit gewöhnlichen Flaggschiffen. Die G-Reihe, die LG als ernst zu nehmenden Design-Anführer positionieren sollte, wurde aufgegeben. Das Velvet ist ein Mid-Range-Smartphone in einer mittleren Preisklasse, dafür aber mit einem erstklassigen Gehäuse. Die Wahl eines Prozessors hat nicht immer eine wesentliche Auswirkung auf das Benutzererlebnis, bei diesem Gerät war es aber definitiv ein Faktor, der zur Auswahl des Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 führte. Die meisten Android-Smartphones, besonders diesjährige Modelle, haben einen Snapdragon 865 unter der Haube. Es ist zweifellos der schnellste Prozessor, der Herstellern von Android-Geräten zur Verfügung steht, doch das Problem ist das Fehlen eines eingebauten 5G-Modems. Deshalb muss es mit einem separaten 5G-Modem gekoppelt werden, der zusätzlich Platz und Energie braucht – das Gerät ist dann dicker und schwerer. LG hat in das Velvet den Snapdragon 765 eingebaut, der zwar nicht so leistungsstark ist wie der 865, dafür aber ein integriertes 5G-Modem hat. LG setzt mit dem Velvet darauf, ein schlankes Gerät mit guter 5G-Funktionalität zu bieten, indem bei der Leistung ein bisschen gespart wird. Das Smartphone wurde außerdem mit 8 GB Arbeitsspeicher und einem 4.300-mAh-Akku ausgestattet, der mit dem relativ schnellen 25-W-Ladegerät oder kabellos (9W) geladen werden kann.

Das Velvet hat einen gebogenen 6,8-Zoll-OLED-Bildschirm mit 1080p-Auflösung, Selfie-Kamera-Aussparung und schlanken Rändern oben und unten. Das vordere Glas ist am Rand gebogen, zwischen den Glas- und Metallteilen sind keine Kunststoffstückchen. Der Metallrand sticht an den Ecken sehr hervor. Von vorne wirkt es definitiv hochwertig, sogar ohne das randlose Aussehen eines Smartphones aus Samsungs Galaxy-S20-Familie. Auch die zusätzliche Auflösung von teureren Geräten fehlt beim LG Velvet nicht, die Farben sehen toll aus, und mit einigen Modi kann man die Sättigung und den Ton einstellen. Im Freien wechselt das Gerät in einen ultra-hellen Modus, um in beinahe allen Situationen ausgezeichnete Sichtbarkeit zu bieten. Ein Nachteil ist allerdings die niedrige Bildwiederholrate. Die 60Hz-Standardrate ist nicht schlecht, stellt aber den Wert des Smartphones in Frage. Das Velvet hat außerdem drei Hauptkameras, nämlich eine 48-MP-Hauptkamera, eine 8-MP-Ultraweitwinkellinse und einen 5-MP-Linse für Schärfentiefe. Die Kamera-Hardware ist ein weiterer Nachteil, denn es gibt einen großen Qualitätsunterschied zwischen den Haupt- und Zweitkameras. Zudem nimmt auch die Hauptkamera keine atemberaubenden Bilder auf. Insgesamt hat dieses Smartphone Vor- und Nachteile, die man beachten muss.
