Das Lumia 435 glänzte im Test mit sauberer Verarbeitung und einem großen Gerätespeicher. Display, Kamera und Performance offenbaren jedoch Schwächen. Wer mit dem Smartphone nur gelegentlich ins Netz gehen, E-Mails oder Facebook checken will, erhält mit dem Lumia 435 ein einfach zu bedienendes Smartphone zu einem Top-Preis.

Das Lumia 435 ist für den geringen Geldbeutel sicher keine schlechte Wahl, wobei ich persönlich aber lieber noch ein paar Euro drauf legen würde, um mir beispielsweise ein Lumia 535 zu kaufen. Der Preisunterschied ist minimal, jedoch hat das Lumia 535 viele der hier negativ angeführten Eigenschaften nicht. Lediglich der Touchscreen reagiert beim Lumia 435 um einiges besser als beim Lumia 535.

Das Lumia 435 richtet sich mit seinem Preis von knapp 90 Euro an Smartphone-Einsteiger und Menschen, die sich kein überteuertes Gerät leisten können oder wollen. Dabei ist das Lumia 435 eine leicht verbesserte Kopie des Nokia X, dass seinerzeit eher für Schwellenländer gedacht war. Es ist also fraglich, ob der deutsche, eher verwöhnte und wohlhabende Markt das Gerät annimmt und überhaupt braucht.

Microsoft Lumia 435 and Lumia 532 are the lowest reaching additions to the already rich in entry level devices Lumia series. With the WindowsPhone OS increasingly targeting budget-conscious users there is some very solid logic behind this. But while playing it safe and not walking off the beaten path might pay dividends in the short run, we are not sure it's the best decision for Microsoft in the long run. The company would certainly like to return to the premium segment eventually, but focusing so hard on the race to the bottom runs the risk of making everyone think of WP as a budget-only platform even if it helps retain some market share.

What it all boils down to, however, is price. The Lumia 520 became the most popular Windows Phone handset not because of its obvious superiority or wonderful good looks, but because of its price. By the end of its shelf life, Microsoft was practically giving them away. This is where the 435 is intended to sit, and as a phone meant to be sold in shovels, it is well worth a look.

Simply put, if the Lumia 435 was closer to the $79 mark (or even lower), it would make more sense, offering enough of what budget phone buyers are looking for, without realising their pennies are getting pinched. Over the $100 mark and it’s harder to see the value, though street price is obviously different from what Microsoft recommends, so if you can find it lower, even at $99, it might make an excellent beginner’s smartphone.

The best thing in Lumia 435 is probably its price, but this doesn’t mean that the phone doesn’t have any other cool features. Although the processor which runs the phone is created for budget devices, as Snapdragon 200 is, it’s made by Qualcomm, so this is big positive for the class. Thanks to its 4-inch screen, Lumia 435 is compact and comfortable for one-handed operation, even though it doesn’t have a thin body.

The Microsoft Lumia 435 is the best phone you can buy under £50, even accepting the tired old Windows Phone apps argument. Bottom of Microsoft's line-up and just £49.99 on PAYG it's by no means a great phone, but for first-time or light users it wipes the floor with similarly priced Android phones (and iOS at this price point is just a pipe dream - or a nightmare, but whichever way you look at it, it's not going to happen). Unlike the more expensive Lumia 535, Microsoft has confirmed that the Lumia 435 will get Windows 10 when it is released later this year, which will make this the cheapest entry point for a Windows 10 computer, and that alone makes it well worth a look.
